13. Last week, I was at my desk in the classroom as usual. I was very tired, and couldn't concentrate(集中注意力)on the lesson. I looked around and noticed a door behind me. "I'm sure it wasn't there before!" I said to myself. Very quickly I got up, opened the door, and saw a long hallway. Soon I found myself in an underground room. There were a lot of strange machines, and people moved around in white coats. Suddenly I heard a scream(尖叫)from another room, and I began to feel afraid. Just then a tall man with white hair came towards me.
"I am a professor(教授)", he told me. "How nice to see you! Did you come to help with our little experiment(实验)? " I didn't like the professor, and I didn't want to stay. I tried to run away, but my legs couldn't move. He came closer. "Don't worry, " he said, smiling. "We're just doing a few tests. . . . " "No!" I shouted. "No test!" He put his hand on my arm and repeated, "A few tests, tests, tests. . . "
Just then I woke up. I was back in the classroom, and someone was shaking my arm. I listened to the teacher. "Tests this week and next week, " she said. "That's better, " I thought.
14. Huang Qingyun spent her life telling stories to children. Now though she is 97 years old , she has no plans to stop.
I did this for children, from the first day I started to write stories. I am old now, but I still want to go on telling stories to children, Huang said.
Born in Guangzhou in 1920, Huang spent her childhood in Hong Kong and her favorite hobby was making up stories for her elder sister.
In 1935, Huang went to university and studied Chinese. During this period, she was greatly influenced by well﹣known Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi and decided to become a primary school teacher. However, instead of being a teacher, Huang found another way to educate children. During World War Ⅱ, Huang often told stories to homeless children at the Little Children Society, a charity(慈善机构)set up by a professor from the University of Hong Kong.
Huang also started a column(专栏)called "Sister Yun's Mail Box" in Xin Er Tong, a children's magazine set up in Hong Kong in 1941. From then, Huang officially started writing and created a large number of stories for children. Huang spent about 30 years at the magazine working as chief editor(主编)in Guangzhou.
Huang retired(退休)in 1987. She moved to Hong Kong and went on creating stories for children, including I Love Hong Kong, Children from Hong Kong and Shoes Brothers.
"What I wrote were all for children and for me, writing fairy tales is my favorite, "Huang said.
15. How can you change negative thoughts? Many people suggest changing your attitude by thinking of something bright and happy.
However, scientists from Queen's University in Canada said that there might be another way: by walking like a happy person.
"It is not surprising that our mood and the way we feel affects(影响)how we walk, but we want to see whether the way we move also affects how we feel, " explained Nikolaus Troje, the lead scientist, to The Independent.
Scientists believed that the way we remember emotional(令人动情的)messages is affected by our mood. Those who feel sad remember negative information far more easily than active messages, especially when the information is about them.
In order to prove this, Troje and his team used cameras to observe 47 people walking on the treadmill(跑步机). Half of the people were encouraged to mimic(模仿)a depressive walking style, while the other half moved like a happy person. Walking speed was kept equal for both groups.
During the time on the treadmill, the scientists read out a list of active and negative words, asking people to decide whether or not each word described them well. Afterwards, people were asked to recite as many of the words as they could remember.
As expected, those who had been mimicking a depressed walk remembered more negative words than those that had been walking in a happy manner.
This finding means that our walk influences the way we treat information. And the scientists believe that using a happy walking style could help with treatment for depression.
16. Tears come out of my eyes when I talk to my parents on the phone. What are they doing when I call them′' This is what I want to know most. I have supper at 5 o'clock in the dining room. Now it is the busiest time for my parents. Dad works from seven o'clock in the morning to nine o'clock in the evening, so all the housework is left to my mum. She not only does the housework but also has to work on the farm. Every day she gets up at 4 o'clock in the morning, and then works till dark.
I promise her to study hard in university because I am her hope, I promise her to take care of myself because I'm important to her. I just want her to promise me that she can take care of herself and my dad because they are , just like the blood in my body.
In my family, everyone is equal(平等的). We are very happy to have meals together. Mum says that the happiest time for dad and her is to see my sister and me come back home. We play cards in the room, watch TV and do anything we like, with dad and mum preparing delicious food in the kitchen. It is also the happiest time for me. I forget all the difficulties and unhappiness at that time. The only thing I would like to do is to enjoy the time with my parents.Sometimes, love doesn't need many words. Love our parents as they love us. Give them a call, telling them you love them and miss them.
