15. The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or Dragon Heads-raising, falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year. It means the start of spring and farming.
The festival is popular all over China. This year it falls on February 24th.
Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall increases because the rain﹣bringing Dragon King has woken up from his winter
sleep.
“Er yue er, long tai tou” means the dragon will lift its head on the second day of the second lunar month.
The most famous tradition for this festival is getting a haircut. Some people believe that going to the barbershop on that day can get rid of bad luck, because they think that getting a haircut during the first month of the lunar calendar will bring bad luck. On that day, people also hold some activities to celebrate the festival.
People usually eat toufu balls in Southeast China's Fujian Province during the Chinese Longtaitou Festival. They often make toufu and vegetable balls to pray for (为......祈祷) health, good harvest and business. Meanwhile, fried beans are one of the traditional foods in parts of Shandong Province.
Eating chengyao cakes which are made of sticky rice during the festival is a tradition in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province. There is an old saying which says, “If you eat chengyao cakes in the Longtaitou Festival, your waist (腰) won't hurt all year round."

16. Mobile phones are now very popular among middle school students. However, different people have different opinions about whether or not middle school students should have mobile phones.
"The great thing about my kids having mobile phones is that I can keep in touch with them. The worst thing about teenagers having phones is that some young people use them to send offensive messages to each other, said William, a parent of two teenagers.
"A teenager feels lost without a phone. If my daughters behave badly, I confiscate (没收) their phones and their behaviour quickly improves,"said Kiera, the mother of 15-year-old twins.
"My mum is afraid that I'm going to lose my phone or that someone is going to steal it. She won't buy me the really cool phone that I want. I've got this rubbish one that doesn't do much. I suppose that makes sense but it's not fair that everyone else has a smart phone while I don't, said Sam, a 14-year-old boy.
Mobile phones are allowed at school in the UK but pupils are not allowed to use them in class and they must be silent during lessons. Teachers can take away phones if these rules are broken. School students can use their phones at break time and at lunchtime. Some teachers in British schools complain that pupils don' t always follow the rules and that lessons are disrupted (打断)by students using mobile phones in class.
17. Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809. His father was a well-known doctor and the son of a still greater doctor. Charles' father hoped that he would also become a doctor.
As a boy, Charles liked to go for walks in the fields and forests. He wanted to explore nature and compared what he saw with everything he had read in silence books. He also liked collecting very much. His father did not like this as Charles was not studying very well at school.
In order for him to be a doctor, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh when he was 16 years old. But he was interested in the history of nature. Then he studied at Cambridge University until 1831.
Some time later, he heard that the ship Beagle was going on a trip to South America and wanted a scientist. His teacher advised him to go. He said the trip would be just for Darwin. During the trip, Darwin saw many new plants and animals. He collected all kinds of plants, which he sent home from the places he visited.
In 1842, Darwin went to live in Kent, where he continued his studies of the changes in nature. Darwin understood that plants and animals are not always the same, and that they really change.
By 1859, Darwin had finished his famous book On the Origin of Species. It made a great hit in the world of scientists. He was opposed (反对) by some scientists. But later, more and more scientists agreed with him. Darwin continued his studies in science until he died in 1882.
18. It's natural for you to feel sad when some people are rude to you. However, what I'd like to say is try to understand others, and let the sad moments go.
Last Sunday, when I was shopping, I met an old friend of mine, Betty. She was looking for something. After a short talk with her, I knew that she worked as a cashier (收银员) at a nearby store.
It was clear that she was not happy. What made her sad was that sometimes the customers were rude to her at the store, She said that it even made her a bit nervous when she worked.
"Well, I think I can understand," I said. "You know, I was a nurse before, and I had sad moments as well. Sometimes patients, their family members or doctors could be very rude, but I tried to understand them, I let the sad moments go and just tried to do my job well."
She looked a bit relaxed after hearing my words. "How kind and friendly you are!" she said. We talked for another while and then she walked for her work with a big smile on her face.
Try to understand others, and the world will be better.
