15. An Unforgettable Hand
Thanksgiving Day was coming. A teacher gave her class an interesting task — to draw a picture of something to express their thanks.
The teacher thought most of her students would draw turkey or some other traditional food of the festival. And so they did. But Douglas made a different kind of picture.
Douglas was a child of unhappiness. When other children played together, Douglas always stood close by his teacher's side.
His picture was special. When he was asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand ! Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
His work caught the attention of his classmates. Whose hand could it be?Some guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raised (养) turkeys;others guessed it was the hand of God (上帝), because God helped everyone. The discussions went on, and they even forgot to ask the artist himself.
When the discussion stopped, the teacher asked Douglas whose hand it was. The little boy said in a low voice, "It's yours, teacher "
She got surprised at his words. Then she remembered that she often took his hand. Sometimes she said, " Douglas, take my hand, we'll go outside. "Sometimes she said, "Let me show you how to hold your pencil. "And she usually said, "Let's do this together.
Her eyes were full of tears. She had done these to all her students. She didn't know these were so important to him. She hugged (拥抱) Douglas and decided to give him more love.
16. Animals, including(包括) insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.
Can you see the rabbit's tail which is moving up and down? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has done this by using its body language.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra (眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its head and makes itself look fierce (凶猛). This warms other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (呜呜叫) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings (人类) speak in the same way. We make sounds like"Oh"or"Ah!"when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes.
But we have something that no animals have一a large number of words that have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. That is something that no animals have. Although animals aren't able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and sentences, they have their own colorful communication ways to express their meanings. We can find more fun by researching their ways of communication. .
17. Technology is developing fast and it has become an important part of our life. Then what will the world be like in the future?
3-D food will be both delicious and nutritious. We can use 3-D printers (打印机) to print some basic materials. And we can go further. Scientists believe that we just need to turn on a printer in the kitchen and then we can enjoy our delicious food whenever we like.
5G network will allow many more people to get information. Big companies like China Mobile and China Unicom will start to offer 5G. It is said that it promises download (下载) speeds 10 to 20 times faster than 4G. For example, we can download a film within just 1 second. But with a 4G network, it takes a few minutes. There will be much bandwidth (带宽) and we can get unlimited (无限的) information.
Underwater cities will give us more space (空间).The earth is becoming more and more crowded (拥挤). We will build more underwater homes under the sea. And the sea will provide enough power (动力)to meet the need of people who live in the underwater homes.
Space (太空)tour will be a piece of cake . For us common people on the earth, the dream of travelling around space will come true. In the coming years , spaceships will be as popular as buses, trains and planes. We can leave our home and enter space to take an adventure (冒险). And we will even get used to living there.
A robot will be a part of life. Robots can do many of the same things as we humans do, like driving cars. But they will be used in other areas as well. They will be able to think. They can tell the difference between right and wrong. In a word, just as Jules Verne said, "Anything one man can imagine, other men can make it real. "
