18. Do you like instant noodles? Do you know why they are curved (弯曲的) , instead of straight? Many people like instant noodles, but few of them think about why they are curved. It just sounds funny. Then what are the reasons?
First, people make instant noodles by steaming and frying (煮和炸). It makes them quite fragile(易碎的). Straight noodles are easy to break on the trip. But the curved shape keeps them from breaking so easily.
Next, the same bowl can hold more curved noodles than straight ones. If we want to have longer noodles, we need to make them curved.
Also, curved noodles have bigger space (空间) from each other. It makes them easier to cook in hot water and taste better. But when we cook straight noodles, if we don't stir (搅拌) them often, they may stick (粘) together.
Then, the curved shape makes it easy for us to eat the noodles with forks(叉)or chopsticks(筷子). Are you good at using a fork or chopsticks to eat straight noodles? I believe it must be difficult.
Now you know the reasons why instant noodles are curved. It's interesting, isn't it? In fact, there is always a reason behind everything.
19. The story was a true one and still moved (使. . . . . . 感动) me deeply.
Thirty years ago, I got to know a poor lady named Rose. She had no kids and lived on her own. When I went to visit her, I always took Rose some coffee and food. One day, she asked me to have lunch together with her. We talked from my workplace to a little restaurant on David Street.
On the way, I began to worry: I knew she had no money, but if I paid for the lunch, I was afraid I would make her feel bad. There were many people in the restaurant and all of them were happy. Rose told me to sit and drink coffee by the window. Then she went to work in the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, she came out and sat with me. She just paid for one meal and we started to enjoy the delicious food together.
She told me that the restaurant let people work for a meal if they had no money, or would give them a free meal if they could not work. To my surprise, she also told me that the workers there were all volunteers (志愿者).
I still remember the beautiful afternoon that I had with Rose. The weather was warm and bright, and everyone's smile was warm and bright, too.
I'm still thinking that life cannot be easy to us, but we can still do something for our friends and neighbors.
