14. An idiom (习语) is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word. For example, if an American boy asks his mum what's for dinner tomorrow, she may say, "I'll play it by ear." That means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later.
"Play it by ear" used to mean playing music without using the sheet music (活页乐谱), but now it's different.
There are many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be much more colorful.
Have you ever heard the idiom "He bought the farm"? It means "He died" Do you know how it became popular? It was first used in World War I. When a soldier died, the government gave his family enough money to buy a farm.
In the early 1930s, people in the US often did not know when or where their next meal was. So as soon as they got something in their hand that could be eaten, it would go into their mouth. That was how people began to use the idiom "live hand to mouth".
And don't be angry if your English friend says this to you, "Break a leg in your game!"
He is wishing you good luck! Hundreds of years ago, people believed in sprites (小精灵). Sprites enjoyed causing trouble. If the sprites heard you ask for something, they would make the opposite happen. Tell someone to "break a leg" and the sprites would make something good happen.
15. Because of the large population on the earth, the world is not only hungry, it is also thirsty for water now. The world's population has reached 7. 5 billion. And it could possibly grow to 15 billion by the year 2100.
On the other hand, about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly . Man can only drink or use the other 3% of fresh water which comes form rivers, lakes and underground. And we can't even use all of that, because some of them has been polluted.
Now more water is needed. The problem is: can we avoid a serious water shortage later on? Firstly we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Today, in most large cities water is used only once, but it can be used again . Even if every large city reuse its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next?
The sea seems to have the best answer. The sea is very big. Look at the map of the world, there is more sea than land. It covers three quarters of the earth. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. Scienists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we'll be in no danger of drying up.
16. We can't remember clearly since when we started to take our mobiles to a dinner table. This happens a lot, especially when we eat out. Once a dish comes, instead of lifting our chopsticks, we take out our mobiles and click. Later, we post the photos onto Weibo or Wechat, waiting to be "liked". Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal, to see      we get "liked" or not. We just cannot leave our mobiles for only a meal.
Does that sound familiar to you? Do you do that often? If not, how do you feel when others do that when having dinner with you?
A recent study suggests that what we are used to doing is not so good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food. As a result, it showed that the more photos they took, the less delicious the food seemed to them. So, why not stop taking photos and just enjoy the food in front of you?
Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one will not be able to control himself and check his mobile many times. "Does everyone like my photos? I hope a lot of people like them!" It seems that your mobile secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.
So, next time you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food? Let the food be delicious as it is and share your life with people around you. Trust me, it will be a wonderful time.
