18. The latest work of Lulu Wang, a Chinese-American director, may surprise us with not just its content, but also its way of filming.
Anian was filmed using just an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It's the fourth year that Apple has created a short film to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Wang says it's the first time she has worked on a commercial (商业广告), and the price and convenience of smart phones enables more film lovers to complete their own work. She hopes that the fantastic tale brings people hope and courage in facing the unknowns of the upcoming new year as much of the world still struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), she says in a video interview with China Daily.
The film tells a tale about the Nian, a beast (野兽) that lives in the mountains and, at Spring Festival, would hurt humans in nearby villages. And people invented firecrackers to scare the beast off. However, the movie sees a little girl, Ating, become friends and keep in touch with the Nian, despite (不顾) her parents' warnings that the Nian eats children for food. Ating also calls the beast "Anian" as a nickname — the actual name of the film in Chinese.
While set in a lonely village in China, the short film explores a classical dilemma (困境):How do parents balance the encouragement of their children's curiosity (好奇) about the world, and their natural desire (渴望) to protect the kids from harm?
19. Nao, a small robot, looks like a person. If Nao begged you not to shut it off, what would you do? Would you follow its wishes?
Scientists did a study to see how people treat robots that act like people. Eighty—nine people volunteered for the study. They were asked to help to improve Nao's social skills by finishing two tasks with it.
The tasks with the robot didn't matter, though. What the scientists really wanted to see was how the participants reacted (反应) once the tasks were over. They were asked to talk with Nao and finally shut Nao off but it was not easy to do. Some people did not want to turn the robot off while others took a long time to do it.
People often communicate with non—human objects such as TVs and computers nowadays. But robots seem more like humans. Robots can show social characters themselves, like speaking with human voices or taking the shapes of a human body. Scientists said people might have seen Nao's cries as a sign of independent thought. In turn, this could have led people to see the robot as having the human—like character.
For thousands of years, humans lived in a world where they were the only ones who could have conversations, the study said. Our brains learned to react to social situations in a certain way. But our brains are not used to telling the difference between real people and fake (虚假的) people. The robot expressed feelings and hopes and that got people to want to treat the robot as if it were alive.

Many people often lose their chance to live life to the fullest because of procrastination (延迟, 拖延), which means that they always delay (使延迟) doing something that must be done at once. Moreover, because they often put off their plans till "tomorrow", they are less likely to achieve their goals and will give up their dreams and goals finally. As a result, we can say that procrastination is the enemy of a
progressive lifestyle.
Now that we know procrastination is something bad, why do some people not take immediate action? Well, there are some things that result in procrastination. Depending on someone else rather than doing by oneself is one of the things. Whenever you wait for something to happen before you act, you make it easier to delay your goals and dreams until "someday". Another cause of procrastination is that people do not value each moment in their day. Actually, it's surprising how much you can do if you just decide to do little things with the little time you have. Also those who often procrastinate can always find a good reason for something they refuse to do at once.
If you are one of those who often delay, then it's time for you to make a decision to act now because things happen only when we decide to act. Get down to doing something like losing weight, saving money or spending more time with family.
Don't let these things continue to be a desire for you to do "someday", but make a decision to do it at once.
Once you have made your decision, write down the plan and take action immediately. Making plans can help you think carefully about how you are going to do what you need to do. After understanding how to do what you want to do, get doing with the plan. It doesn't matter how small the move you make is as the little things you do accumulate (累积) over time and move you to be closer to your goals.
So, don't wait until tomorrow; instead, start now! Just make use of every moment you have to do something that is helpful in realizing your dreams and goals.
Here is a challenge that will also move you to be closer to your dreams and goals

Stay away from procrastination
