14. The Chinese first made paper about 2, 000 years ago. China still has pieces of paper which were made as long ago as that. But Chinese paper was not made from the wood of trees. It was made from the hair — like parts of certain plants.
Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. Scandinavia (斯堪的纳维亚半岛), which now makes a great deal of the world's paper, did not begin to make it until 1500. It was a German named Schaeffer who found out that one could make the best paper from trees. After that, the forest countries of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the United States became the largest paper producers. Today in Finland, which makes the best paper in the world, the paper industry is the biggest in the land. New paper-making machines are very big, and they make paper very fast. The biggest machines can make a piece of paper 300 meters long and 6 meters wide in one minute.
When we think of paper, we think of newspapers, books, letters, envelopes and writing paper . But there are many other uses. Only half of the paper that is made is used for books and newspapers, etc.
15. No matter when you start your weight loss program, these five ways may be necessary and helpful. :
  ※Write It Down
Write down what you eat every day in your notebook. You can accurately count how many calories you are using and make sure you are getting the right balance of nutrients(营养).
  ※Have A Bowl of Soup
Try having a bowl of hot soup before a meal. Then when you eat your main meal, you will likely find that you are satisfied with less food.
  ※Drink, Drink, Drink
Drinking water throughout the day can help you feel full and stop you eating too much at meal time. Make sure you only drink water or other drinks such as black coffee or tea without sugar.
  ※Lift Weights
Lifting weights regularly and strength training are also important. You do not have to join a gym to build muscle (肌肉) mass. Body weight exercises such as pull-ups, push-ups, and leg lifts all build muscles and can be done at home.
  ※Get Enough Sleep
It seems wrong to rest more to lose weight, but research shows that when you are not getting enough sleep, your metabolism (新陈代谢) may suffer and tells your body to eat more. Try to get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.
Remember that losing weight takes time. Always be willing to tell what is and is not working with your weight loss program. Do not be afraid to take up a new exercise, try a new way of tracking your food, or experiment with unfamiliar food.
16. Two traveling monks reached a town where there was a young woman waiting to step out of her sedan chair. The rain had made deep puddles and she couldn't step across without spoiling her silk skirt. She stood there, looking very worried and impatient. She was scolding her servants. They held her bags for her, so they couldn't help her cross the puddles.
The younger monk noticed the woman, said nothing, and walked by. The older monk quickly picked her up and put her on his back, crossed the water and put her down on the other side.
She didn't thank the older monk;she just pushed him out of the way and left.
As they continued on their way, the younger monk was unhappy. After several hours, he spoke out, "That woman was very selfish and rude, but you picked her up on your back and carried her! Then, she didn't even thank you!"
"I set the woman down hours ago," the older monk replied. "Why are you still carrying her?"
There is an actual cost of holding on to things we should let go of. It can come in the form of anger , frustration or something even worse. The faster we learn to drop our emotional weight, the more room we create for something better.
17. Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem. So in 2007, the city began a plan called Velib to improve the situation.
Under the plan people can take bicycles, use them for as long as they want, and then leave them at the same or another bicycle station. The first half hour on the bike is free, but if you don't return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. There are about 20, 000 of them in the city, and around 1, 450 bicycle stations.
Paris is not the first city to have a plan like this. Lyon started a "free" bicycle plan many years ago. But not everybody thinks it's a great idea. One Parisian(巴黎人) said, "These bicycles are only for short journeys."
A city spokesman (发言人) said, "The bicycle plan won't solve all the traffic problems, of course. But it might reduce pollution levels. Traffic, together with factory smog (烟雾), is a big problem. Everyone knows about global warming. It's because there's so much pollution in the world. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too. Unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse."
18. Even in early times, people could realize the importance of dreams. If a person has a dream and holds fast to it, he or she will find a way to achieve it.
Children do not have much experience or knowledge. However, they are natural dreamers. Many great men were dreamers when they were children. One such dreamer was Thomas Edison. He used to be ostracized (排斥) when he was in primary school, but his achievements were greater than everyone else in his time.
Teenagers and young people should also be encouraged to dream. The world is full of successful teenagers and young people. Their dreams changed their lives and even the world. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are good examples. They have developed technology and brought great progress to humans besides making money for themselves.
Older people should believe that it is never too late to dream and that human's mind is never too old to make dreams come true. Colonel Saunders realized his dreams at the age of 67 and set up the biggest fried chicken company (KFC) in the world.
To dream is a wonderful ability which can lead to wonderful results. No one is too young or too old to dream and to achieve his dreams.
