TAXI DRIVER: I was driving behind a truck a few kilometers from Newton. The truck stopped suddenly. The driver did not give me a warning. I was driving very slowly. I could not pass the truck because there were two cars coming near from Newton. My taxi hit the truck, and some glass cut my left hand.
TOM: I was watching the traffic about a kilometer from the airport. A truck was going to Newton. It was not going very quickly. There was a taxi about two hundred meters behind the truck. It was going fast. When the truck slowed down, the taxi hit it. The taxi driver was not looking at the truck. He was looking out of the window at something. My friend saw the accident, too.
Tom's friend spoke to the policeman and agreed with Tom.
15. I am Alice. My sister and I spent our last summer holiday with our uncle who is a geologist (地质学家) and loves to collect stones.
One day he bought us two backpacks and asked us to go to the mountain with him. We walked the whole day. Every now and then he put stones in our backpacks. To our surprise, he also took some stones out from them. But we thought he had just found better stones.
When we returned to the house, we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relaxed when we took them off. Yet our uncle's backpack was half empty.
"Why did you give us so many stones?" we asked.
"I didn't. You did." he said. "You didn't know it, but I gave you a little attitude (态度) test today. I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining (抱怨), I added a stone to your backpacks. Whenever you talked about something with positive (积极的) thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks."
Our backpacks were full of stones.
"Your negative (消极的) thoughts are just like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be." said our uncle.
With great love, our uncle taught us one of the most important lessons it life — the power of the attitude.
16. It was a sunny night. Jim was having a drink with his friend. He drank too much, and he had to leave at half past eight because he had a ticket for a music festival, which would start at nine o'clock.
It was half an hour's walk from the pub (酒吧) to the theatre. Jim knew a shortcut that would only take ten minutes, but it meant crossing rails (铁轨) and was dangerous. He took the shorter way, however, and when he reached the rails, he tripped (绊倒) and fell over. Then he fell asleep with his face down. After a while, a train came. When the driver saw a body lying on the track, he tried hard to stop the train. When it finally stopped, it was several meters before the body. The driver quickly got off and checked. Luckily, he found the man was still alive, but sleeping. Though the driver tried hard to wake him, Jim just kept sleeping. The driver took Jim to the hospital, where he woke up at last.
When Jim was told what had happened, he decided to give up drinking. "I'm so lucky that I have a chance to turn my life around," he said.
17. From my father, I have learned a lot. And I'm very thankful to him. I remember when I was a child, my father always got up very early, quietly put on his clothes and went off to work. To arrive in time to open his tiny store at 8:30, he needed to leave our apartment at 6:30. After all (毕竟), he had to take a bus and then the subway. The last journey was a long walk through a neighborhood, much of which was full of the smell of rubbish. I learned it is very important to work. No excuse.
When I was 12, I would, on some Saturdays, go to my father's store to help out. After helping set up the outside clothing display, for the rest of the day, I'd watch to make sure no one stole anything. When I noticed someone looking unusual or strange, I would look the person in the eye, smile and say, "May I help you?" Usually that worked, but sometimes, someone would run off with something. The first time, I ran after the thief but my father shouted, "Martin, stop! There is no need to do that." It's true that safety is more important than money.
After 10 years of hard work, he saved up enough money to buy his first car, a cheap one — he wouldn't buy one until he could afford to pay for it without borrowing money. I learned:buy only what you can afford. Buying necessary food and clothing won't make us go into debt (债务). The unnecessary things won't give us happiness, which comes from achievement (成就) only.
18. It was a Spring Festival night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. When I was complaining about it, three people came to my desk — a tired woman and two children.
"Are you all sick?" I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right.
"Yes," the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to talk about their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending (假装) to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only told them that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. "Take your time, please," said the mother. I checked their charts (病历) — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled (蜷缩) together, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses' station and told them what happened in the waiting room. The nurses' station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses were ready for "a Spring Festival emergency (急诊)".
We took out our meals for our "patients". We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tried to warm a family who only wanted a warm place on Spring Festival night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, "Thanks for being our angle (天使)."
19. One day, I took a taxi to the train station. We were driving on the road when suddenly a black car jumped out of another lane (车道) right in front of us. My taxi almost hit the car.
The driver of the black car started shouting at us. But the taxi driver just smiled and said sorry to the man. I thought he was too friendly. I asked, "Why did you just do that? The man almost sent us to the hospital!" This is when the taxi driver taught me what we call now — the Law of the Garbage Truck (垃圾车定律).
"Many people are like garbage trucks," he said. "They run around full of garbage like frustration (沮丧) or anger. They need a place to dump (倾倒) it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, say sorry, wish them well and move on. Don't take their garbage to other people at work, at home, or in the street."
