16. Thanksgiving is an American festival. It's celebrated on the (1)       Thursday in November. It's a time for a special dinner among family and friends. People make short (2)       and give thanks for their food.
We have celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America (3)      in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter . The local people, the Native Americans, (4)       the pioneers how to grow corn. The following year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food.
We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is always the most (5)       room in our house because we all help prepare the food. We lay the table, and then before we begin dinner, my father gives thanks for the food, so we remember (6)       we celebrate the festival. We usually eat too much, but it is only once a year!We often talk a lot and (7)       after dinner as well, when it's all over everyone helps wash the dishes.
The festival is a very busy time for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. During the festival, there are plenty of other things (8)       and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The (9)       goes along several streets and finishes at the famous Macy's Store. Thanksgiving is the start of the Christmas season, and we start shopping for presents. Football is also important at Thanksgiving, with many (10)       playing games. Like many Americans, we usually watch the games on television and enjoy ourselves very much.
17. Every time we go into a museum, we are often told, "Don't touch that!" However, the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia is (1)       the opposite. Here we are encouraged to touch everything.
My first visit to the museum was one year ago. I was (2)       to visit the museum as soon as Mum told us its name. She told us that we could climb, jump, run and shout in the museum.
This place is more like a (3)       rather than a museum. It gives kids the chance to learn through play. I loved this place a lot and had to be pulled away by the arm when we were ready to (4)      . Each exhibit is a hands-on experience. I especially enjoyed the very large water table and grocery store (食品杂货店). I had so much fun that I didn't even (5)       I was learning.
The only problem is this place gets crowded very quickly on weekends, so you have to get there early if you don't want to be immersed in the sea of people.
18.The Science Museum in London
By Tony Smith
Welcome to the most friendly museum in London. In most museums, there is no shouting and no running, and you must not touch anything. But the Science Museum is different. It is noisy!People talk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very noisy machines as well. If you want answers to all your questions about science, this is the right place for you.
I like to visit the rooms on the second and third floors. You can learn about communications and the environment as well as maths, physics and chemistry. For example, you can find out how people dig coal from the ground and use it to create energy. And in one room they even explain how X-rays let you see inside your body.
The Launchpad on the third floor is the most popular room, and it is my favourite too because there are lots of physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with sand, you have to control a kind of truck on wheels and move it into the correct place. You can also find out how people travel into space and back again.
On the fourth and fifth floors, you can learn about what medicine was like in the past. If you compare the medicine of the past with the medicine of today, you will feel very lucky next time you visit a doctor!
The Science Museum is interesting for people of all ages. You can always find something new and have a wonderful time there. The museum is free to enter, so you can go in for a few minutes or stay all day. It is open from 10 a. m. to 6 p. m. .So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It is my favourite museum in the whole world!
19. The most enjoyable way to discover Liverpool is by boat. The first thing to do is to take a ferry across the River Mersey. It's the best way to find out about this city's long and interesting history. The Liverpool Ferry, which is the oldest ferry service in Europe, started more than 800 years ago.
In the 18th century Liverpool became an important city for international business across the Atlantic Ocean. Ships sailed from Liverpool to the United States and Africa. The place to learn more about Liverpool's importance is the Maritime Museum.
Liverpool was important because of its industry and trade in the 18th century. In the 20th century it became famous for music. The boys in the rock group, the Beatles, all came from Liverpool. The city is very proud of them. It named its airport John Lennon International Airport after one of the Beatles. Tourists can take a bus tour to visit some of the places , the Beatles mention in their songs, like Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. They can also visit the Cavern Club the group first played there in 1961. The Beatles Story is a museum and gallery. Here you can find out more about these world-famous musicians.
But there's more to see and do in Liverpool. At the Walker Art Gallery you can see the best art in the North of England. If you like modern art, the place to visit is the Tate Gallery. But above all, it's the friendly and welcoming people of Liverpool who make this a city you should visit when you come to Great Britain.
20. January 1 is the New Year's Day, the first day of the year. It is a legal (法定的) holiday. And all banks, stores and schools are closed. Many people invite their friends to come and visit them in the afternoon or evening.
The only legal holiday in February is Washington's Birthday. Although Washington was born on February 22, his birthday is now celebrated on the third Monday of February. Some States also celebrate Lincoln's birthday on February 12. These two, the United States' most famous presidents, were both born in February.
The last Monday in May is Memorial Day (纪念日). This holiday remembers the many service members, men and women, who died for their country. Americans celebrate Memorial Day with services in cemeteries(公墓) and churches.
America's great national holiday, Independence Day, falls on the fourth of July. It celebrates the birth of the United States. It was on this day that the colonists (殖民者) announced their independence from England. They had to fight hard for the next sever years to win this independence.
This first Monday of September is Labor Day. This holiday honors the working people of the United States. There are sorts of celebrations and speeches on this day too. People go to all kinds of places to enjoy the fine weather at the end of summer.
