2. A warm story has been taking place on one end of Islington Road.
Glenda and Raphael Savitz met with each other in 2011 in Boston. They fell in love and got married in the fall of 2013. In the summer of 2016, the couple moved to Auburndale, Florida. Three months later, their daughter Samantha was born.
However, within a week, the doctor told them that their newborn baby was deaf. It was a hard blow to the couple. What should they do? They had no choice but to help her learn sign language. "We are going to learn it, too. It is important for her growth and development, " the mother said.
But they didn't expect it when their neighbors all started to learn sign language. "We were excited that this new baby was coming, " said Jill McNeil, one of the neighbors. "But it's frustrating (令人沮丧的) not to be able to say, 'Oh, Samantha, I love your pretty pink pants. ' " To communicate with the cute girl, they had to know her language. So these neighbors hired a tutor without letting Glenda and Raphael know.
Go. Like. Want. Eat. Play. Have. Make. These adult-students started with simple words. They then learnt to ask questions in sign language, such as "Who do you live with?" and "Where does your family live?"
Now the American Sign Language has become a second tongue in the neighborhood. These kind neighbors practice it with the girl almost every day.
Growing up in such a warm neighborhood, Samantha is now a happy and energetic (充满活力的) girl. She greets her neighbors every time she sees them. It's an amazing situation, since deaf children can be shy.
Samantha is a lucky girl. She has found real family among all those people next door.
3. Why is good grammar important? Well, good grammar can save lives! Just consider the difference between "Let's eat, Grandma!" and "Let's eat Grandma!" With the first one, you are inviting your grandma over for a lovely meal. The second one sounds like you are excited about Cannibalism (同类相食).
Jokes aside, some people think good grammar is unnecessary. They argue that as long as they are being understood, it should not matter whether there are a few grammatical mistakes or not.
But I don't think so. I believe good grammar matters.
Thinking about your grammar when your writing makes you easier to be understood. You may think a grammatical mistake doesn't matter. But think about it from the reader's point of view.
Even a small mistake can make your reader stop and read the message again. He or she will have to spend more time understanding it.
Good English grammar will help improve your English skills generally. Being able to speak and write correctly, over time, builds your confidence while using English. This will encourage you to increase your vocabulary. With good grammar and a wide vocabulary, you will find it easier to express your ideas and communicate with native speakers.
Good grammar can also make you appear more reliable (可信赖的). Just think about your attitudes towards a newspaper that has many grammatical mistakes in its articles. You will doubt if the information in the newspaper is reliable, won't you?
The same is true on a personal level. Your writing shows who you are. If there are many careless mistakes, then it appears to readers that you don't care about your work. This makes them less likely to trust you.
I hope you have now seen the importance of good grammar.
