13. Everyone loves to have a garden. But do you know how to grow a garden? Well, this article will help you with gardening. Remember that gardening needs lots of water, most of it in the form of perspiration (汗水). So get ready to sweat out (流汗) for the beautiful garden that you are going to grow in your apartment.
Decide the place where to grow a garden first. If your apartment has a yard, and it is big enough to grow your dream garden, then choose it. A very important point you need to consider is the amount of sunlight. You know that some plants can't grow without sunlight.
The second thing you should decide is the type of the garden. Do you want a vegetable garden, a flower garden or a combination (结合) of both? That is because different plants grow in different weather conditions. For example, some plants need more water while some grow well in dry conditions.
You also need to design your garden. Decide where to grow tomatoes, carrots or flowers. Make a perfect plan to make your garden look more beautiful. It's also a good idea to cover some green grass on other space of the garden. Then you can not only enjoy the vegetables you grow but also the beautiful flowers. You'd better ask someone who has lots of gardening experience.
14. Lots of students know what a marathon (马拉松赛跑) is because it is an event of Olympic Games. But perhaps you don't know what a triathlon (铁人三项) is. The triathlon is a sport that has three parts — swimming, bicycling and running. It is not an easy sport, but a man named Joe Salter is very good at it. A few months ago, he finished a special triathlon — he juggled (抛起接住) three balls all the time during the triathlon. That is to say, he kept on throwing and catching three balls while he was swimming, riding a bicycle and running.
31-year-old Joe is from Florida, the USA. He loves juggling and he started at the age of 8. Joe did well in juggling. Later, he got the idea to do a triathlon and juggle at the same time to make it more fun. Many juggling fans laughed at his idea and thought it was just a joke, but Joe didn't give up and he kept practicing it. Because of his hard work, he made it at last.
Talking about his triathlon, Joe said swimming was the hardest part. "It was difficult and complex," he said. "I basically only used my legs, so it took quite a lot of work. Also, swimming in open water made it a little harder. It was not like in a pool."
15. Taking away a city's rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things, we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In most cities, the rubbish is collected and taken outside of cities to a dump (垃圾场). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.
To keep mice and flies (苍蝇) away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this was once an old rubbish dump.
In other cities, the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal.
Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus (腐殖质), which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow.
