11. China celebrates Tree Planting Day on March 12. In the past, some people would (1)       part in tree planting activities on this day to show that they loved China. However, these days people plant trees (2)       the environment. Trees are very useful (3)       the environment and our lives. Their roots (根) hold the earth together so that the rain (4)      wash it away. Traffic on the roads gives (5)       a lot of CO2 (二氧化碳). Tree leaves take in some of CO2 and (6)       it to make the oxygen (氧气) we need. Looking at trees can make people feel calm and (7)      . Trees can reduce (减少) noises. Trees are (8)       because (9)      always change with the seasons. Trees in a town or city can make people cool in summer. And trees that lose their leaves in winter let the sun (10)       into the building.
12. One day, a boy had a fight with one of his classmates. Then he went to his grandfather and told him his story (1)      . "He is really bad," the boy said, "and I hate him."

As the boy (4)       carefully, the grandfather went on. "There are always two tigers inside my heart. One is (5)       and kind. He gets on well with everything around him. But the other is bad and unfriendly. He is full of (6)      . Even the smallest thing can make him angry. He fights with everyone all the time, and for no (7)      . The boy looked into his grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which tiger always controls you, grandfather?"
The old man said slowly in a serious voice, "The one that I feed. I always feed the good and kind tiger, so I never hate others and (10)       get angry now."
13. Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I was young, it was the spring of my life. I was born. I played a lot, and then I started school. I learned many new things. Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sorrowful days: some days the sun shone, and some days it didn't.
In my twenties, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married and had a child. In those days, I didn't have much time to think. Every day I was busy and worked very hard. And so, I started to get some white hairs.
The summer of my life passed quickly. Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell from the trees. My child was a university student, and then a doctor. My home was much quieter. I started walking more slowly.
One day I stopped working. I had more time. I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change the colour and give us delicious fruits.
But the days kept getting shorter and colder.
Winter has come. I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days left, but I will enjoy them to the end.
14. Now cities are full of cars. Some families even have two or more cars. Parking is a great problem, and so is the traffic around the cities. Something will have to be done to change it. What will the cars of tomorrow be like?
Little cars may someday take the place of today's big cars. If everyone drives little cars in the future, there will be less pollution in the air. There will also be more space for parking cars in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. Three little cars can be put in the space now needed for one car of the usual size. The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too. What is more, these little cars can go about 65 kilometers per hour.
Little cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips. If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed in the future. Some roads will be used for the big, fast cars, and other roads will be needed for the slower small ones.
15. When I looked at the grade on my math paper, I was shocked: a big "65" in bright red ink. As a good student in my teachers' eyes, I had never received such a terrible grade before.
I was so afraid that when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad. I told him I got 85 and the report wouldn't come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. Because he never thought that his daughter would lie to him.
A month later, Dad asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math exam. I told a lie because I didn't want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me. After a quiet moment, in the end, Dad said, in a hurt voice, "You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not sad at your math score. That is no big deal — no one can be perfect all the time. However, I am very sorry for you. If you can't be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with? It's much easier to get a better grade than rebuild others' trust in you."
Dad's words touched my heart. I took out the report, gave it to him and said sorry to him. My father smiled and touched my head gently, "I'm glad you understand that." At that time, I knew that my honesty is not only important to myself, but to those around me that truly care about my happiness.
One of the English sayings says: "Be honest rather than clever." After that between Dad and me, I began to understand those words.
