2.CAN YOU COOK?
This teenager can — and his mom's very happy with him.
Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports.
But between 5:30 and 6:30 from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: mom, dad, younger brother Joe and older sister Emma.
Tom's mom:
I think it's important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them in today's world.
First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes in my cookery (烹饪) books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!

Tom:
I love cooking and I think I'm really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don't know why. It isn't difficult and it's great fun!

In the past, Tom didn't help out at home and his mom wasn't very happy with him. Today, things are different and she is very happy.
3. There are many fights in this thick book that you would see in a good action movie. In fact, the book has been made into a movie, but I'm just not interested. How would I enjoy the movie when the book didn't touch my heart at all?
I don't mind reading about bad guys in a story. In fact, I don't enjoy a book that has only good people who never do anything wrong, because it's just not real life. But Lyle Heaton goes to far this time. I've read Heaton's other books, and he is very good at writing about bad guys, but what is he trying to tell us by letting the bad guys in this book win everything in the end?
Besides, you always have to guess who the "I" in the book is. Heaton changes it so often that sometimes you just don't know who is speaking.
You might feel a lot of things when you read Purple Star, but believe me, joy wouldn't be one of them.

4. Probably nothing can compare with a parent's will to protect her child. Let's see how these animals find ways to protect their children.
Sperm whales are emperors of the ocean. They are also the world's biggest babysitters. The mother supports her baby near the surface in order to help it to breathe until it is strong enough to swim on its own. While they are diving for food, however, their young baby may be unable to follow their parents.
This causes a big childcare problem. The solution? A babysitter.
Older whales have an active role. They may be aunts or grandmothers (who can live to 100 or more years old) and they may even be members of other families. They patiently take care of the young whales just under the surface of the water, waiting for the feeding mothers to return.
Elephants give new meaning to the phrase: takes a village to raise a child. The baby has a huge group of mothers. These mothers take turns to watch over each other's children. They are called "allmothers", helping the new born survive (生存) by helping its mother. With their help, the mother can get enough food and provide milk for her child. After carrying a nearly 300 pound baby for 22 months, you'd probably need some rest, too!
How far would you go to protect your child? Would you starve (饿死) yourself to help it survive?
Female Octopuses do. An octopus lays between 50,000 and 200,000 eggs each time. Then, she separates the eggs into groups based on their size, shape and possibility of survival. She then spends the next two months of her life protecting them. She is so busy keeping them alive. She doesn't even have time to feed herself — so she often ends up dying shortly after her eggs hatch (孵化).

16.阅读短文,根据要求完成文后的题目。
Have your parents ever helped you with schoolwork? Do you think they are giving you too much help?
Nearly 90% Chinese parents said that they had helped their kids too much in school, according to a recent survey of 1,504 parents done by China Youth Daily. Meanwhile, 70% parents agreed that overparenting (过度照顾) could lead to a loss of their children's independence.
Children, on the other hand, want to do things by themselves.
"Doing things ourselves gives us a strong sense of achievement," said Liu Jiawei, 13, from Jilin. "One day we will leave our parents. So it's better to develop skills and live independently as early as possible."
Some, however, think parents have good reasons to help.
Jiang Qi, 12, is from Beijing. He said that his parents would sometimes help him by making PowerPoint presentations and creating handmade works.
"Our teachers have very high expectations for us," Jiang said. "If my parents don't help me while other students still get help from their parents, I'm afraid I'll fall behind them..."
