12. What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects (设计师) believe that they are all possibilities (可能性). The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a "tree house." Like a leaf (树叶), the surface (表面) of the house collects (收集) sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat (加热) water, produce (生产) electricity (电), and even create fresh air for the home. The "root" (根) of the house is deep (深的) under the ground. It uses the soil (土壤) to the home's temperature.
The Lizard house
Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing (改变) color with the weather is the most important design(设计)of a lizard house. When it's in the bright (明亮的) sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect (保护) it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy (能量).
Meals at home
This design is perhaps (也许) as much about the future of food production as architecture (建筑风格). It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
Learning from the past
Looking to the future isn't the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques (古老的技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney(烟囱) can be a useful air conditioner (空调) because it is easier of hot air to flow out at the chimney.
13. People use money to buy food, books and hundreds of other things they need. When they work, they usually get paid in money.
Most of the money used today is made of metal or paper. But in the time long ago, people used to use all kinds of things as money. One of the first kinds of money was shells (贝壳).
In China, cloth and knives were used as money. Elephant tusks(牙), monkey tail and salt were used in some parts of the world. Rice was also a kind of money used by the people in some islands.
The first copper coins were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the center. Different countries have used different metals for their money. Later, some countries began to make coins of gold and silver (银). But gold and silver were heavy to carry when people needed a lot of coins to buy something expensive. The Chinese were the first to use paper money. The first paper money cooked more like a note from one person to another than the paper money used today.
Money has had an interesting story from the days of shell money till today.
14. John and Jack met at the old bench every afternoon. Then they played football. But they didn't have enough money to buy a real football. So Jack made a ball out of old socks covered with a piece of plastic. Every time, the two friends didn't stop kicking and running until very late.
On Monday afternoon, John and Jack met again at the old bench. Soon the home﹣made ball was running across the grass. The boys laughed and shouted happily. The ball was stopped by a boy wearing a nice pair of sports shoes. John was upset when he saw it was Steven.
The next morning, John's mother gave him a bill. "Your uncle sent you a birthday present," she smiled. John's eyes grew big when he saw the 100 dollars bill. Later that day, his mother bought a pair of new sports shoes and a real football.
That afternoon Steven invited John to play football. Steven did not want Jack to join them only because Jack's sports shoes were dirty. When the game was over, John and Steven walked past the old bench where Jack was sitting. Steven picked up a stone (石头) and threw it at him. John, holding his new football in his hands, walked on and did not look back.
Several days later, as John walked past the old bench, he saw something lying under it. He looked closer and saw it was the home﹣made ball, John was full of sadness when he saw the ball. As his sadness turned to anger (生气), he picked up his new football and kicked (踢) it into the air. Then he walked to the bench, sat down and waited.
15. You're searching the Internet and find a website with interesting articles. Some are news stories. They are for sharing information. Others only look like news stories. They're actually advertisements ( 广告). They are there to get you to buy something. How do you tell the difference between a news story and an advertisement?
My research team showed teenagers the home page of a popular digital magazine (电子杂志 ). We asked them to show us a news story and an advertisement. Most were great at finding advertisements. So where did kids find it more difficult?
Some advertisements seem to be very similar to real news stories. They have headlines . But they may also have the words sponsored information. Sponsored means "paid for", and the information is the story. "Sponsored information" is a way of saying that something is an advertisement. It means someone paid money for it to be there. Most kids in our study, even if they used the Internet often, didn't know this.
As a reader, you need to look carefully. Sometimes, the advertisements are in very small letters. The Internet is a big sea of information. To use it well, we not only have to know how to swim but also how to avoid the sharks. Learning to tell the difference between an advertisement and a news story is important to be Internet smart.
