1. There was once a farmer. He had a very big rabbit and a smart dog. One day, he organized (1)       between his dog and his rabbit. He made a hole in one of his biggest fields, and (2)       a carrot and a bone (骨头) in it. He wanted to see which animal would find them first.
The rabbit was very (3)      , and he was busy looking for the carrot, digging here and there. He was completely sure that he would find the carrot and the bone. But the dog wasn't optimistic (乐观的) at all. After he looked for the bone for a short time, he (4)       on the ground sadly. And then he (5)       to complain. He thought it was difficult for him to find one bone in such a big (6)      .
The rabbit (7)       for hours. With every new hole, the dog complained about how difficult this was, even for the rabbit. The rabbit, on the other hand, kept on working hard. (8)       there was no place in the whole field left to dig, the rabbit dug a tunnel (隧道) to right under where the dog was lying all that time. There he found the carrot and the bone.
And this is how the dog lost the competition. (9)      , he found the right place at the very beginning. But he failed to find the bone because he (10)       complained and didn't try at all. When we do something difficult in our life, we should learn from the rabbit.
2. I would never forget what I learned from the day when I left my junior high school. On the last day, our teacher told us something educational that I would like to share with you.
He began by drawing a man standing in the middle of a circle. To make it more interesting, he drew things like a house, a school and a few friends inside the circle.
He asked, "Can anyone tell me what this is?" In a long silence, one student decided to express his idea, "The world?" The teacher said, "That' s close. This is your Comfort Zone (舒适圈). Inside your circle you have all the things that are important to you — your home, your family, your friends and your jobs. People feel that inside this circle they are safe from any danger.
"Can anyone tell me what will happen when you step out of this circle?" A strong silence came over the room. The same student replied, "You are afraid." Another student said, "You may make mistakes." The silence continued and our teacher smiled and asked, "When you make mistakes, what can the result be?" The first student said, "You learn something."
"Exactly, you are learning." Our teacher turned to the blackboard and drew an arrow (箭头) pointing from the man to the outside of the circle. He went on saying, "When you leave your Comfort Zone, you put yourself out there. The result is that you learn something that you do not know to become a better person." He drew a bigger circle around the original (原来的) circle, and added a few new things like more friends, a bigger house, etc.
A lesson from this story is that if you stay inside your Comfort Zone you will never be able to open your eyes to the outside world. When you step out of your Comfort Zone, you will make your circle bigger to challenge your mind and grow to be stronger, and all in all to be a better person.

4. If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter (脑灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr.Andrea Michelle, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learned a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的)," he said, "You are actually going beyond (超出) language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.
5. Dogs have an amazing talent for understanding human social behavior, and they can take actions upon human orders, but what if they are given instructions not by real humans but by humanoid robots that behave like humans? Will dogs obey the robot's orders?
At the International Conference on Human Robot Interaction (人机交互会议) 2020, researchers at Yale University's Social Robotics Lab tested how dogs responded (回应) to instructions from robots. A group of 34 dogs participated (参与) in the experiment, and each dog was tested with either a speaker (扬声器) or a human-like robot in a room. After a brief introduction to the testing environment, the robot or speaker called the dog's name, using the same voice. Then the robot or speaker would give a "sit" order, which was the real test.
Results of the experiments showed that the dogs paid more attention to the robot than the speaker. Dogs obeyed the "sit" order over 60% of the time when it came from the robot, but less than 20% of the time when it came from the speaker, even if they did look a bit confused about the whole thing at times.
While these results are certainly interesting, it's important to answer the question of whether dogs could respond to a social robot at all. The researchers were giving the dogs a great opportunity. For example, the dogs' owners were instructed to interact with the robot, talking to it and making eye contact, to help encourage the dogs to see the robot as friendly and make the anxiety (焦虑) less while also drawing attention to the robot. However, they haven't discovered what factors (因素) might increase or decrease (减少) that likelihood (可能性).
"Since dogs are very sensitive (敏锐的) to human social cues (指示), the robot being humanoid or not may make a difference", lead researcher Meiying Qin said. "Yet, if a non-humanoid robot behaves like a dog or shows any social behaviors, dogs may also respond in a social manner."
"Now that we have evidence that dogs do respond to social robots, the next step is to figure out what we haven't discovered yet," added Meiying Qin. Humanoid robot, which is one of the greatest invention in the 20th century, is the advanced representation of robot technique.
Some people may question the value of making social robots for pets. Dogs aren't the only animals that robots interact with of course. The larger idea is that by studying how dogs behave toward social robots relative to humans, it can help us understand how social robots affect our own behavior, too.
6. The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. (1)
According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills have declined (下降). (2)
It is believed that digital technology and Internet memes (表情包) have changed their communication habits. For example, direct expression is the preferred way to communicate online. When one see something funny, one will simply type hahaha or use the cry-laugh emoji.
Also, "copy and paste (粘贴)" culture is getting popular. (3)       Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as whenever you disagree with each other, you … (一言不合就……)
Cai Xiaojia (not her real name), a teacher from Fuzhou, told China Youth Daily that words in general are being used less. For instance, people can share photos online with little need for words to describe them.
"If this trend continues, it could influence our way of thinking," People's Daily noted. (4)       If teenagers adopt (采用) casual (非正式的) methods of expression like emojis, they could lose the ability to use words properly.
To improve our language skills, experts suggest that we should try to think independently and develop our own language logic (逻辑). (5)       "Keep using various words to show your unique feelings," said Shen Xiaolong, a professor in the Chinese department at Fudan University.

With her eyes feeling increasingly tired and her vision blurry (模糊的), 16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight (1)             from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a semester. "A few of my friends have had the (2)             experience lately," Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students (3)             from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education. Now, more and more students wear glasses. The main reason for this is that (4)             lifestyles have changed. They spend less time outdoors and more time looking at screens.
To protect students' eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that will take effect on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the (5)             of text in students' textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point (小五号). Teachers should also avoid (6)             projectors (投影仪) or other multimedia equipment (多媒体设备) that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as (7)             blue light as possible. Blue light is bad for our eyes, as it can kill the photoreceptor cells (感光细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic devices (电子设备) we use every day, (8)             our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.
Chinese government has also (9)             other steps to protect students' eyesight in China. In May 2020, the National Health Commission (委员会) urged (要求) schools to make (10)             that students have at least two hours of outdoor activity a day.
13.[1]One day in 1903, French scientist Edouard Benedictus climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his laboratory. He carelessly hit an empty glass flask (烧瓶), and it fell to the stone floor.
[2]Benedictus climbed down, expecting a mess, but he found a surprise. The glass hadn't broken into a million pieces! It had cracked (破裂) but it had held together. Benedictus wondered why.
[3]His helper explained he had used the flask to hold liquid plastic (液态塑料). Then he'd put the flask aside and forgotten to wash it. The liquid plastic dried, so the flask looked empty. Benedictus realized the dried plastic had kept the cracked glass from falling apart.
[4]The same week, Benedictus read a report about a car accident in the newspaper. The car was a new and exciting invention, and many people were driving fast on the roads. (4)When accidents happened, people were often hurt by flying broken glass. Suddenly Benedictus thought of the broken flask. Could his accident be something useful?
[5]Benedictus spent a lot of time in the lab, trying to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Benedictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and pressed them together. When he hit it, the "glass-and-plastic sandwich" cracked, but it didn't break into small pieces.
[6] Benedictus succeeded. He (5)①________ in his diary, "I produced my first piece of Triplex (the name for his invention) — full of promise for the future."
[7]Benedictus was right. His method of (5)②________ plastic between pieces of glass is still used today. And that's how an accident led to a(n) (5)③________ that made us all safer!
