"No," said Henry, "Don't join in this fight. We have nothing to do with it, and may get into trouble." "You are really a coward (懦夫)," said Robert.
The next day Robert told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him. However, Henry thought, "It's not a big deal." He knew that he should always choose to do right. This was true courage.
A few days later, Robert was swimming with the boys. He got into water that was too deep for him. Robert cried for help. But all the boys got out of water as fast as they could. They didn't even try to help him. Robert was falling fast when Henry threw off his clothes and jumped into the water. He reached Robert quickly. At last, Henry tried his best to bring Robert to the bank and saved his life.
Robert and the boys were ashamed (羞愧的) at having called Henry a coward. They agreed that he had more courage than any of them.
19. Parents always want the best for their kids. But everyone has their own way to educate their kids. Here are four popular education styles. Which one do you like best?
Tiger parents
They are strict with their children. They want them to get the best grades in their class. They love their kids in their hearts.
Dolphin parents
They just want their kids to be happy and healthy. They make sure their kids get enough sleep and exercise.
Helicopter (直升机) parents
They worry too much about their children and "fly" over them like helicopters. Many people think these parents should give their children more free time.
Lawnmower (割草机) parents
Like a lawnmower that cuts grass, they clear up all difficulties for their children. Their kids never learn to work out problems on their own.
20. Have you ever wondered if you see the same colors as other people? Most people know what blue is when they see it. They see the color and call it "blue" because they were taught the word and connected it with what they saw. But how do you know what you see as blue isn't someone else's red?
The ability to see colors depends on receptors (感受器) in our eyes. Light waves hit these receptors which will send information to the brain. The brain then deals with the information to make sure which color light the eyes are receiving. Some people's receptors are more developed than others. People with weaker receptors usually have color blindness. That the receptor can't translate the light waves correctly means some people cannot tell different shades of a color.
In the past, most scientists argued that everyone saw colors in the same way. However, research was done on monkeys, in which they were injected (注射) with a virus to influence their receptors. This made them understand more about colors than usual and brought an interesting discovery. Normally, monkeys can only see blue and green, but the virus allowed monkeys to see red. Their brains were made to be able to understand new colors, which might mean the brains are not instinctive (本能的) to understand which color is which. This shows that our brains may get used to new information depending on what they receive during the development. Color could be a very personal experience to everyone.
So, the next time you talk about your favorite color, just remember if yours is blue and your friend says red, you might actually be thinking about the same color. What if everyone in the world has the same favorite color, but just calls it different names?
21. For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure (珍宝) hunt can be.
You don't have to be spineless (没有骨气的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You can not expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed (责备) unless he refuses to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like — selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them.
At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don't like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why and look at yourself, too. To be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislikes you. Someday, things may turn out all right and then you will have to learn to get along the best with situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can't change.
22.
and; called; time; quickly; third

One evening, Jack went into a restaurant. He sat down, (1)             a waiter, and said to him, "Give me a drink before the trouble starts." The waiter was busy with other people, so he did not say anything. But he gave Jack a drink and Jack drank it (2)            . Then he put his glass down, called the waiter again and said to him, "Give me another one before the trouble starts." Again the waiter didn't say anything. He gave Jack his second drink (3)             went away. Jack drank that, too. And then again he called the waiter and said to him, "One more drink before the trouble starts, please." This (4)             the waiter was not very busy, so when he brought Jack his (5)             drink, he asked him, "What trouble are you talking about?" Jack answered, "I haven't got any money."
23.
be; say; play; put; come

One Monday evening, when I (1)             back from school, I was upset and didn't turn on the TV to watch my favorite cartoon as usual. My grandmother came to me and asked what had happened.
I told her, "I (2)             jokes on today. Several girls in a higher grade didn't like me and kept saying terrible things that made me cry. I don't know what I can do and I feel really sad about it."
My grandmother looked at me with her loving eyes and replied, "Emma, you have two unseen pockets. One has a hole, and the other does not. So if somebody (3)             something good to cheer you up, put it in the pocket that is sealed (密封的) and strong. Save it. When you go to bed, take it out and enjoy it."
"But what about the other pocket, Grandma?"
"The other pocket is where you put the hurtful things that people say to you. Let it go quickly and it won't hurt you anymore. That hole is for all the problems that you give to God."
Everyone has two different special pockets in their heart. When you get praise from other people, remember (4)             it in your sealed pocket, because it can make you become a better person. When you hear something bad, just put it in the pocket with a hole and let it go. Then your life (5)             happier.
24. It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. (1)       They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are too serious and too strict with their children; and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they always forget how they themselves felt when young. For example, young people like to make choices without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. (2)       Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset (扰乱) by something unexpected.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. (3)       They will specially wear clothes or say something that are different from those their parents like. And this will make the young people very happy somehow.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say "yes" to what you do. (4)       It is natural enough after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents' control.
But if you plan to control your life, you'd better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. (5)       If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

A. Older people seem to worry a lot more easily.
B. Parents should try hard to keep up with their children.
C. That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own.
D. You can ask for their advice before you start doing something.
E. They say that their parents don't understand them.
F. Young people like to make plans for almost everything.
G. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.
