14. "I hate school, and I'm not going back!" Many kids have that thought sometimes. Usually this feeling doesn't stay long, but it does harm to your healthy life. You might be stressed out, thus you have no ideas about what to do. In the morning, you might not know what to eat or what to wear. Having bad sleeping is another sign of stress. If one doesn't have enough sleep, he may be tired and unhappy. However, where does the stress come from? Sometimes it's a problem with your classes and schoolwork. Maybe the homework is too easy and you get bored. Or maybe the homework is too difficult and you don't feel as clever as the other kids. Reading may be difficult for you, but you have to do a lot of it. You may be getting behind, and it may seem that you will never catch up with others.
When you know why you don't like school, you can find ways to make things better. It's a good idea to talk to someone about your problems at school. Your mom, dad, friends, teachers, or even classmates will be able to help you. Another good idea is to write down your feelings about school. For example, keep a diary or just write in a notebook. It's a great way to relax yourself and you don't have to share what you have written with others. Making a "don't like" list is also a great idea. The next time you find yourself disliking school, try to find out everything you dislike or enjoy — even there is only one thing. See what you can change on the list. You may ask yourself, "Could I find a way to show my special interests and talents on what I like? Which activities could I try that would help to solve these 'don't like' problems? What should I do to take up a new hobby and make myself relaxed?" Think more about what you can change and you might be able to put the good feeling back in school.
15. Have you ever tried Shaxian Snacks (沙县小吃)? You may find Shaxian Snacks restaurants in nearly every Chinese city. But now the popular restaurant chain is going overseas.
In 2018, Shaxian Snacks opened its first store in the United States. The store is in New York City. It was so popular that all of its food sold out within three hours on the first day when it opened.
Shaxian Snacks comes from Shaxian County in Fujian Province. Many local people left the county in past years to work in other parts of China. And of course, they brought their food with them.
Shaxian Snacks sells local foods from Shaxian, such as peanut butter noodles and pork wontons(猪肉馄饨). There are many dishes to choose from. Some are traditional, while others are new. But the thing they have in common is that none of them is expensive. That might be why they're so popular. At the Shaxian Snacks store in the US, a full meal costs about the same as a meal at KFC or McDonald's.
16. Mrs. Weeks was reading a newspaper story to her class. The story said: Were you ever in a hospital when you were small? How did you feel? The doctors in Children's Hospital are asking for money for children's toys. Some children in the hospital must stay in bed for many weeks. Toys are needed to keep these sick children happy and quiet. Money for them can be sent to the hospital.
After Mrs. Weeks read the story, she said, "This story gave me an idea."
"You want us to bring some money for the toys." "We could bring some of our own toys for the children in the hospital," said the boys and girls one after another.
"Well, your ideas would be nice," Mrs. Weeks said, "but mine is different."
"We could make some toys," shouted one of them.
Mrs. Weeks smiled. "Do you think you could make toys?" she asked. "Yes, yes," the whole class answered.
"Great! Let's begin to make toys tomorrow," said Mrs. Weeks.
On Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Weeks took children to the hospital with the toys made by her students. The children in the class felt happy, too.
A few days later, Mrs. Weeks read another newspaper story to the class: Some school pupils brought toys to Children's Hospital last week. The toys were made by the pupils of Grade Three in Green Street School. The doctor said, "We have never had so many wonderful toys. Our children are very happy with them. They say, 'THANK YOU, GRADE THREE.'"
17. When you are ill, you'll be unhappy because your body becomes hot, and there are pains all over. You don't want to work. You stay in bed, feeling terrible.
What makes you ill? It's germs (细菌). Germs are everywhere. They are very small and you can't see them with your eyes, but you can see them with a microscope. They are very small and there could be hundreds of them on or in a very small thing.
Germs are always found in dirty water. When you look at dirty water under the microscope, you will see them in it. So your parents will not let you drink dirty water.
Germs are found not only in dirty water, they are also found in air and dust (灰尘). If you cut your finger, and if some of the dust goes into the finger, it will become big and red, and you will have some pain in it. Sometimes germs will go into your body and you will feel pain everywhere.
18. As we know, elephants are very cute animals, and many people like them very much. But do you hear of an elephant that can draw?
Shanti is an elephant and she is good at drawing very much. Somebody has actually paid 2, 000 dollars for a painting done by her.
Shanti has painted 12 paintings so far but now she refuses to paint more. The director of the Prague gallery came up with an entirely (完全地) improbable reason why she stops drawing.
The director said, "She starred as an elephant named Bimbo in a movie. She is a very famous artist in it. Now she is in some sort of depression (抑郁). We will just have to wait for her next wave of creativity."
Shanti does a good thing. Shanti's paintings bring money which helps elephants in Sri Lanka.
19. Bears are mammals(哺乳动物) with a large body. They live in the northern hemisphere(北半球) and in parts of the south. The most popular ones are brown bears, black bears and grizzly (灰色的) bears.
Bears are dangerous animals. We'd like to see them in movies but don't feel safe to see them face to face. For this reason, they live in the wild although there is pollution, killing and tree cutting.
The oldest bear is called Ursavus Elmensis. It was similar to a tiger. It was found in Europe and it lived there 10 million years ago. Over time, it turned into the bear we see in the zoo.
Brown bears are the strongest. They have the largest size and they weigh up to 850 kg (male) and 500 kg (female). The weight changes depending on life conditions and food.
Polar bears are the best swimmers of all kinds of bears. They live near the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) and have to swim for miles every day in cold water for food.
Study found that American Black Bears are one of the cleverest animals. They are able to count (数数).
