The babies often (3)      (die) from illnesses and do not live very long. Adult pandas spend much time eating about 10 kilos of bamboo every day. Many years ago, there (4)      (be) a lot more pandas and bamboo forests in China, but then humans started to cut down these forests. 8.When You Are the "Lucky" One
I remember being really happy for my friend Avery when she won the championship, although I admit I was also a little bit envious (嫉妒的). When Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland, however, things went the (1)       way.
Avery really hoped to get picked to be Alice, but I didn't (2)       what part I would get as long as I was in it. A few days later, we raced over to the theater office to see the cast list.
"That can't be right," Avery said. "There must be some mistake!"
But I really and truly was given the (3)       of Alice. Avery got the role of the March Hare.
"Do you want to come over to (4)       our lines?" I asked.
"You mean your lines?" Avery said, not even looking at me. "No, thanks. I'm pretty busy this week."
"OK," I said. "How about some day next week?"
"Sorry," she turned back. "I'm pretty sure I'm busy forever."
That night at dinner, my parents congratulated me for getting the lead role. "Well, I'm really confused," I said. "Avery was so (5)       because I was picked to be Alice. She pretty much threw away our friendship."
"Hmm," said my mom, "sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious and don't know how to (6)      . She just needs a little time and understanding."
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then at rehearsal (排练) one day, I went up to her, "I know you didn't exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you're such a talented actor, and the way you say your lines is so awesome." I smiled.
  "Thanks," said Avery.
"Well," I said, "I'm still struggling with a few things about my character. I'd love your help if you have any free time."
"I think I might be free on Thursday." She (7)      .
Our play ended up going great. Even though things were tough for a little while with Avery and me, we're better than ever now! Avery even apologized (道歉) for the way she'd been acting at first.
People often have a hard time dealing with their feelings of envy and disappointment. If you happen to be the lucky one who's doing amazingly well, give your teammate a little time and (8)       and he or she just might come around before too long. This might be the perfect time for you to be an extra-good friend.
9.Self-Respect (自尊) Building Activities for Teens
During the teen years, kids often face a lot of challenges in life. Luckily, there are some self-respect building activities for kids who have low self-respect.
Making Lists To begin with, the teens should make a list of at least five things they like about themselves. This list can include things like their pretty smiles, or more important things like getting good grades. Each day they continue to make a new list in order to get the lists updated (更新的). The teens can turn to them when feeling sad.
Superhero Capes (披风) The superhero cape activity requires (要求) a large group of teens who know each other well. Give each teen a large piece of paper to make a cape. The teen's name should be put across his or her chest. The teens then walk around and write at least one positive (积极的) thing on others' capes. Finally, the teens view their own capes to see what others have written.
Self-Respect Collage(拼贴画) In this activity, the teens just read through magazines and cut out words or pictures that best describe their lives. These cuts might include words about their personalities, pictures of activities they enjoy doing, foods they like or jobs they long for. All the magazine cuts should be placed into a collage.
Self-Respect Calendar A self-respect calendar can help deal with stress. Give each teen a blank calendar at the beginning of the month. The teens then write down things they enjoy doing for each day. Activities might include playing a basketball game with friends, having a milkshake or reading one's favorite book.
10.The Lost Airplane
  "We're leaving!" Dad called.
Cody was about to race downstairs when he noticed the tiny airplane on his cousin's desk. "It would be fun to take it to the beach," he thought. "I don't think Dave will mind." Cody put the airplane into the pocket of his swimsuit. On the beach, Cody made a runway (机场的跑道) in the sand. Then he took out the airplane and imagined it taking off.
"Cody, are you coming with us?" Dad called. Dad and Uncle Jeff couldn't wait to go surfing.
Cody took his bodyboard and ran after them. They rode wave after wave. Soon Cody's teeth were chattering from the cold. He was glad when they decided to head back to their place on the sand.
Resting on the beach, Cody enjoyed the warm sunshine. But with a sudden fear, he sat up. "Where was the airplane?" He searched the sand around him, but he found only broken seashells. He kept looking for the airplane while eating lunch. But as it became clear that the airplane was lost, he lost his appetite (胃口) as well. Cody was quiet on the way back heme, wondering how to tell Dave about it. Slowly he climbed upstairs. On the very last step, he felt something sharp in his pocket. "Could it be?" His fingers closed around the airplane in disbelief. He must have put it into his pocket in his rush to go surfing! Awesome—now he wouldn't have to tell Dave about it!
But Cody didn't feel relieved (如释重负的). He knew he had to say sorry to Dave.
"I'm so sorry," Cody said after telling Dave what had happened.
"I would have let you borrow it," said Dave. "I'm proud of you for telling me, though. Next time, just ask."
Cody felt better, as if he'd caught another wave—a wave of relief.
11. Dogs can help first-year university students treat homesickness, according to a new UBC study. The study shows that animal-assisted therapy (动物辅助治疗) can help students treat homesickness and could be a useful tool in lowering post-secondary drop-out rates (辍学率).
"Transitioning (转变) from high school to university proves to be a challenge for many first-year students," says Professor John Tyler Binfet of UBC. "Since students who experience homesickness are more likely than their non-homesick schoolmates to drop out of university, universities should support students during their first year."
In the study, 44 first-year university students who were homesick were given a survey to measure levels of homesickness, satisfaction with life and connectedness (关联) with campus. Half of the students completed eight weeks of dog therapy, while the other half were told to take the therapy eight weeks later. Dog therapy included 45-minute weekly gatherings, like group activities with the dogs and their trainers, and meeting other first-year students participating (参与) in the study. After eight weeks, participants in both the treatment group and the non-treatment group completed the survey again.
Participants who completed the eight-week program were less homesick and more satisfied with school life. They reported that during the therapy they felt like they were at home talking with friends who brought their dogs. However, the non-treatment group reported an increase in their feelings of homesickness.
"Moving to a new city, I did not know anyone at the university and became very homesick," said Varenka Kim, a student who took part in the eight-week therapy. "I stayed in my room and didn't feel like I belonged here. Having dog therapy every Friday gave me a sense of purpose and I stayed positive about life."
12. No doctor has ever considered that a shirt can save a patient's life. But on a family summer vacation in 2017, Rob Leibowitz wore a T-shirt while walking around Disney World with the words: "In Need of Kidney, O Positive." A few months after a picture was posted on Facebook, Leibowitz, who had been on the list for several years, had a successful surgery with a kidney donated (捐赠的肾脏) by a complete stranger. Although this story might be unusual, it made me wonder: can medicine and fashion intersect in other ways?
They might seem like as strange a combination as red and green. Yet fashion is already being considered in health care settings. For example, the effect (影响) of hospital gowns on patients has been studied, and many patients report feeling a loss of privacy (隐私) when putting on a gown. The gown even drove patients to have the idea that they were unwell.
As a result, designers (设计师) have rethought what a patient gown could look like. Such redesigns have not been widely accepted by hospitals yet, perhaps because the gowns have to be cheap, easy to make and easily washable. However, gowns in different sizes and colors might help give the patients a feeling of control and support especially when so much is out of their control.
In fact, creative solutions to patient gowns have already been shown to have some positive effects. At Weill Cornell, young patients undergoing MRI scans (核磁共振检查) were given an "MR—I-Am-A-Hero" kit to make the experience feel like part of a superhero adventure. Researchers found that the number of kids who needed medicine to stay calm decreased (减少).
My own experience also has shown me the value of thinking about how important fashion can be in medical settings. A few years ago, I was working on a study about how patients could find kidney donors through social networks. I remember asking one woman about her pink shirt, with "Help Me Find a Kidney" on the front and a picture of her and her family printed on the back. "Every time I put it on," she explained, "I am reminded that there is still hope."
13. Many children ride a school bus to and from school and don't think much about it. But for 12-year-old Johnny Cohen, the smell of waste gases (废气) from school buses got him thinking about if there was a way to save more energy for the buses.
The main problem with school buses, Johnny realized, was their boxy shape. It takes more energy for a boxy bus to move forward through the air. He thought that improving its shape would reduce the energy needed to move a bus. His first idea was to add a clear windshield (挡风玻璃) to the front of the bus. In this way, this windshield would let air go up and over the bus.
Then, with the help of his sister and friends, Johnny started his project, which he called GreenShields. The GreenShields team needed money to design and test his idea. Johnny entered his idea in a contest in 2010. He tried all his best to get people's support online for his idea—he spoke with town councils, talked to customers at stores, and used social media to ask for people's support. Luckily, his hard work paid off, and his team won $25,000 to develop the idea.
After several years of researching and testing, a new design called the V4 was created. Instead of sitting on the front of the bus, the V4 sits on the roof of the bus like a hat. Its sloped (倾斜的) design allows air to flow over and around the bus more easily. In tests, buses using the V4 went farther on a tank of gasoline (一箱油). According to the Greenshields team, the V4 can possibly save $600 every year for every bus. With all the school buses on the road in the United States, that could save millions of dollars every year.
Although it still takes time for the V4 to come into use, Johnny and his team believe they will succeed. So if the next school bus you take looks a little different, you may be witnessing (见证) Johnny's idea in action.
