15. Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go﹣kart to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help.
"Well, " he said. "How about this:you do some research first and then come back to me with a design."
A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart "Blue Lightning". Dad looked over her work, thinking. "Well, that's interesting, " he said. "Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you've designed. "
Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go﹣kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed.
After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. "Well, " she said. "Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive."
"Oh, do you?" he said. "Please share. "
"When I drove fast, there was a lot of pushback, " she said. "I think it's because of the lightning bolt (闪电) shape."
  "Very good!" Dad said.
"So, why didn't you tell me about that problem in the first place?" Sally asked.
Dad laughed. "Where's the fun in that?If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime."
Sally said, "I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun !"
Dad smiled. "Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way."
That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go﹣kart, he nodded with pride.
Finally came the race. Sally wasn't worried about whether she would win — in her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before.
16. Nigeria is a hot and dry country in Africa where electricity is not available (可获得的) to many homes. Most people grow and sell their own fruit and vegetables. Keeping them fresh in the hot place is a real challenge. Without a fridge, most fresh food goes bad in several days. Throwing away the food means losing money for poor families. Eating the bad food causes serious health problems.
Local teacher Mohammed Bah Abba was worried about this problem and decided to solve it. As a boy born into a family of clay pot (陶罐) makers, Mohammed knew that these traditional clay pots could keep water even when dry. In the 1990s he used this traditional knowledge and his understanding of science to invent a cooling system. It worked as a "desert fridge".
Mohammed's cooling system is made up of two pots—a small pot inside a larger pot. In the space between the two clay pots, there is wet sand. People put the fruit and vegetables in the smaller pot, and cover it with a wet cloth. Then they leave the larger pot in a dry place. When water from the sand evaporates (蒸发), it causes the temperature in the pots to go down. This way the food in the smaller pot is cool.
With the pot-in-pot cooling system, food stays fresh much longer. Mohammed's "desert fridge" has improved the lives of thousands of people. So in 2001 he won the Rolex Award for Enterprise, which is for the people who try to make the world a better place.
17. Frank is a student. He likes playing with his phone very much. And he keeps the phone with him at all times. His dad thinks he is addicted(上瘾的) to his phone. But Frank doesn't think so. They write to each other.
Dear Frank,
You've heard the warnings. It's reported that fifty percent of the teenagers depend on their phones too much. I think you have this problem too. That's why I think you should give up your phone. Not forever, just for a week. I'm worried that you are developing some bad habits. You keep your phone with you all the time—you even check the basketball scores at the dinner table. It's not a good idea to use your phone while you are doing homework. You can't put your heart into your homework at all. And you may make more mistakes when you can't fully put your heart into it. There are many good reasons to take a break from your phone. Have a try!So what do you say?Are you ready to give up using your phone? Love,
Dad
Dear dad,
I know you think I depend on my phone too much. But I'm just using technology to help my life to be better. My phone helps me in many way. Do you remember that time when the car broke down. I sent a message to tell you that I was going to be fate. If I didn't you would be worried about me. My phone helps me with my homework too. I can look up anything in a second. It's really hard to be successful today if you don't have a phone. Social media, games, and apps might seem silly to you, but they help me to keep in touch with my friends. I promise to cut back my phone use, and I won't use it at the dinner table anymore. But giving it up for a week would be a mistake and it wouldn't change anything in the long term. Love,
Frank
18. Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2, 000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time, only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3, 000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius' lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them. "
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. "All study but no thinking makes people puzzled (困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy."
Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. "A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others." he said.
19. A young lady was driving a family car home with her father when they were caught in a heavy storm. The young lady was a little afraid and asked her father. "What should I do, stop or keep driving?" Her father said, "Keep driving."
After driving a few kilometers, the storm was becoming heavier and heavier. The young lady noticed that some cars and big transport trucks were pulling over (靠边停) to the side of the road. The young lady asked her father again if they should stop. But her father said nothing. So, she had to keep on driving.
Ten minutes later, the storm started to become small and she could see a little more clearly. After a couple of kilometers, she drove out of the storm. Moreover, the sun came out and the road ahead was dry.
Her father told her to stop and get out of the car.
"But why now, Father?" she asked in surprise.
Her father said, "When you get out, you can look back at all the people in cars and big trucks that gave up and they are still in the storm. Now, your storm is over because you didn't give up."
Don't give up, even if the stronger do. If you keep going, soon your "personal storms" will be over. The sun will shine on you again and the road ahead will be dry and clear.
