A. After a while B. colorful kites C. chose D. cut off E. buy

One day, a father and his son went to a kite flying festival. When they arrived, there were already many adults and their children playing in the park. When the son saw the sky filled with (1)       in different shapes, he was excited and wanted to get one, too. His father agreed. So they went to a kite shop and (2)       a beautiful one. With the string (线) in hand, the son started flying the kite. Soon, the kite was high up in the sky. (3)      , the son said, "Father, it seems that the string stop the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, it will be free and fly even higher. Can you cut it?" The father didn't reply, but just (4)       the string. Suddenly, the kite began to go higher, which made the son much happier.
2.
A. feel like B. to his surprise C. in fact D. fall down E. itself

However, (1)      , the kite was coming down slowly. They waited for quite some time, it fell onto the grass. The son felt upset and asked, "I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it (2)      ?" The father smiled and said, "The role of the string was not stopping the kite from flying higher, but helping it stay in the sky because the kite (3)       can't fly up. By using the string, you help the kite go up the right direction. When you cut off the string, it could not support the kite.
In our life, we may sometimes (4)       there are certain things that are holding us back and stopping us from growing. But in fact, these might be the things that support us most. We can really grow up and become stronger by realizing the importance of these things.
3. Climate change is a big problem humans are facing. How can we deal with it? Reducing carbon emissions (碳排放) is important. But what if we could capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and use it to do other things?
Recently, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said that his company is working on a new program. It's going to take CO2 out of the air and turn it into rocket fuel.
It will not only be good for Earth, but "will also be important for Mars," Musk said. The air on Mars is made up of 95 percent CO2. If we could turn CO2 into fuel, we could travel the long journey from Mars back to Earth in the future.
The idea may sound strange but it's not totally crazy. There are already some technologies that might help with this. According to Di-Jia Liu, a chemist at the Argonne National Laboratory in the US, the carbon atoms (原子) in CO2 and the hydrogen (氢) atoms in water can be made clean fuels. If we do this on Mars, energy from the sun might be used as a catalyst (催化剂).
The idea will also make space travel more eco-friendly. "If the CO2-based fuel could be used in a rocket launch, we could prevent 715 tons of CO2 from being put into the air," said Stafford Sheehan from Air Company, a US company that focuses on CO2 collecting technologies.

4. More and more people like bicycling and it is no surprise. It's fun, healthy and good for the environment. Maybe that's why there are more and more bicycles on roads worldwide today. Bikes can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost!
However, two centuries ago, when bicycles were first invented, they were used only for transportation. In the eighteenth century, people usually traveled by horse and wagon (马车). In 1817, an early "bicycle" was made in Germany. Its frame (车架) was made of wood. It didn't have any pedals (踏板). People had to push with their feet. In the 1830s, the first bicycle was invented. Pedals were made for the bicycle. In the 1860s, Frenchman Pierre Miehaux and his son gave the bicycle a new look. In 1867, they brought the bicycle to the World Expo (世博会). Since then, the bicycle was more and more popular in Europe. In the 1870s, the front wheel was much larger than the back one. This made it very hard to ride. It was also very expensive. In the 1890s, bicycles with same-sized wheels came out in North America and Western Europe. They were much safer, cheaper and more comfortable.
In China, there are shared bikes on the roads. They have saved us a lot of time during hurry situations, and on beautiful, clear days. However, bicycling is not easy in our city. There are no bicycle lanes (车道), and bikers have to travel next to cars in car lanes.

5.Let paralyzed people walk again
The human spine doesn't just help us stand up straight. Inside the spine is the spinal cord (脊髓). (1)       The legs and feet send "sense" information to the brain, saying they're hurt or hot, for example. And the brain sends signals to the lower body, perhaps telling the legs to walk, dance or sit down.
When someone's spinal cord is hurt, this important pathway can get damaged. That means the information about senses doesn't reach the brain from the lower body. (2)       When that happens, a person is paralyzed (瘫痪的).
Surprisingly, now scientists in Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again. Each of the three men had damaged their spinal cords in motorcycle accidents and couldn't move their legs. To help them walk again, a special device (装置, 仪器) was put directly on the lower part of their spinal cord, below their injury. (3)       Just hours after the device was first used, all three men were taking steps, with support. The computer tells the device to send "walking" messages. The scientists use computers to create patterns of movement — like taking a step — that work well with each patient. The patients then choose the pattern they want, and the muscles move in the chosen way.
Over time, the men are able to walk entirely on their own, using a special walker with buttons to trigger each leg. One of the men has walked for half a kilometer on his own with the walker. (4)

The new ship is China's second aircraft carrier and it is called Shandong. China's first carrier is called Liaoning, which (2)      (buy) from Ukraine and later rebuilt by China. The ship must be completed at sea, which will take several years.
An aircraft carrier is like an airport on the sea. It (4)      (carry) planes and troops to war. Planes fly from and land back on it, and soldiers work and live on it. Thanks to carriers, planes can fight along with warships. They allow planes (5)      (take) off and land from anywhere in the ocean around the world. But an aircraft carrier is very hard and expensive to build. It costs a lot of money and needs a large amount of steel and other special materials. For example, a basic aircraft carrier is made of 60,000 tons of steel! It also (6)      (use) complex (综合的) technologies, including radar, electrics, mechanics and weapons. Finally, it takes years to build.
Today, not many countries own an aircraft carrier or have the ability to build one. As China grows stronger, the third aircraft carrier (7)      (hit) the water in the near future. China has become one of the countries in the world that can build an aircraft carrier by itself.
15. Qingming is not only one of China's 24 solar terms, but also the time for Chinese people to honour their lost family members. Qingming falls in early April of spring when the temperature begins to rise and rainfall increases. It is the right time for spring sowing (春播). At the same time, Chinese people will visit tombs of their ancestors (祖先) around Qingming to pay respect to people who have died. Most of the time the whole family will go together with something like flowers, food or paper money, clean up wild grass around the tombs and pray for family prosperity (兴盛).
A traditional Chinese painting named Riverside Scene on the Qingming Festival was drawn 900 years ago. It shows the prosperous atmosphere and activities on that day. People returned from tomb sweeping with horses and packages in the picture.
Chinese people call themselves the children of the Yan and Yellow Emperors. A great ceremony is held on Qingming every year in order to honour the Yellow Emperor, also known as the Xuanyuan Emperor. On this day, the Chinese from all over the world pay respects to this ancestor together. This serves as a reminder of the roots of Chinese people and a chance to revisit the civilization (文明) of our ancestors.
Qingming became a Chinese public holiday in 2008. During the holiday, there is also a popular and relaxing activity — spring outing. The spring sunshine brings everything back to life, and it's the best time to enjoy the beautiful views outside. The mild temperature and fresh air make spring outing another good choice for those who lead busy modern lives.
Qingtuan, a round green dessert, is one of the must-have foods for the festival. It was originally an offering (供品) to ancestors during Qingming. But it is now regarded as a spring outing snack, especially popular among people living south of the Yangtze River.
