3. Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. But the good news is, you're not alone. Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy. Shyness is feeling a little nervous or as if you want to hide when you're around other people or in a new situation.
What happens if you are shy? Scientists say such things as genetics (遗传基因), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
_____________ Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
How do people overcome (克服) shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. "When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me."
But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness takes time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you're in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
Let people know you're shy. If you're shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. Remember, you're not the only shy person around. Do what you think might help others feel good — for example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practice for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.
4. In China, each year we produce about 150 million tons of city waste according to a report. Where does the waste go? People usually burn or bury it. On the other hand, we receive waste from some developed countries. We get useful materials from it. What about the useless part? Still burned or buried. But is it a proper way?
Waste pollutes the environment, harms people's health and causes animals to die. It also gets in the way of green and sustainable development. We can't make money at the cost of the environment. We should leave clean water and green mountains to our next generations (一代人).
China is getting really serious about waste now.
We are taking less waste from developed countries. From January 2018, China started to stop 24 kinds of waste coming into our country. And more laws and rules about dealing with waste have been made. Anyone who breaks the law will be punished.
China also tries to put waste into good use. One example is the waste electricity factories. They burn waste to make electricity in a green way. No harmful gases or water will get into the environment.
The Chinese government is encouraging people to do waste sorting (分类). Cities like Shanghai, Chongqing and Beijing have their own sorting systems. More will join them soon. As President Xi Jinping said during a visit to Shanghai, waste sorting is a new fashion (时尚). More and more people are forming the habit of separating their waste.
5. When teacher Margret Atkins, 39, went to ride her bike to school last Friday, she was shocked to discover it (1)      (steal). When our reporter spoke to her, she told him that she'd been angry when she realized the bike was gone. It was quite (2)       old bike her grandpa had given her years ago. She said it was (3)      (valuable) gift she'd ever received.
So what did she do? She decided (4)      (write) a note to the thief and put it where the bike had been taken away. To her surprise, she (5)      (find) the thief had returned the bike, together with a written apology (道歉) later that day. "What I did was (6)      (complete) wrong. I'm really sorry I took your bike. Hope you can accept (7)      (I) apology!"
Mrs. Atkins told reporters she was not going to call the police (8)       she was no longer angry. She was just thankful that she could go to school on her bike again. She added that she'd probably write another passage to the thief. "I want to thank him (9)       returning the bike and tell him I've forgiven (原谅) him," she explained. "People sometimes make (10)      (mistake), but the important thing is that they own up to (承认) what they've done," she said.
