13. There are usually few things people want to do less than housework . But while doing the dishes and cleaning the house seem like troublesome and boring things , a new study has found just how important they are to our health and happiness.
In fact, scientists now believe cleaning the house is more important to mental (心理的) and physical health than other things , such as the city they live in and how much money they save . Experts at Case Western Reserve University say doing housework is helpful because of the exercise it takes to get the job done , which in turn influences (影响) mental health.
Dr. Kathy Wright and a team at the university's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing wanted to find out how money , education , environment and health habits , like smoking (吸烟) , influence the elders' health . The 337 persons taking part in the study , from 65 to 94 years old , had to have at least one chronic (慢性的) illness . It was impossible for them to do at least one necessary thing by themselves , such as taking a shower and dressing.
To Dr. Wright's surprise , doing housework and keeping their money influenced their mental and physical health more than other things . "House﹣cleaning kept them up and moving, " said Dr. Wright . "It's important for the elders with chronic illnesses to do some housework . A clean environment is helpful in giving medical care to some illnesses . " The study also showed what Dr. Wright had seen in her visits :people living in a dirty environment seemed less satisfied than those in a place that was tidy .
Now that doing housework is so important to us , there is no excuse not to do it . Let's get it started right now !
