12. Open an app, place your order, and wait for your food to be delivered (递送) to your home—this is how many people eat in China these days. According to the latest data (数据), about 421 million Chinese people use online food delivery services. That's equal to half of the total number of Internet users in China.
Which group of people is ordering food online the most nowadays? Unsurprisingly, it's mainly young people. A recent report showed that 86.3 percent of the service's users are between 20 and 34 years old. These people, who are more likely (可能的) to live in small families, are the major force (力量) driving the development of the food delivery industry.
Small families depend greatly on food delivery services. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Chinese families have changed in size over the past decade. In 2002, only 7.7 percent of families were single-person households. But this number increased to 15.6 percent in 2017. The percentage of two-person families rose from 18.4 in 2002 to 27.2 in 2017. For small families, cooking is relatively (相对) more time-consuming, so ordering food online has become more popular.
The improvement of China's food delivery services has also attracted more customers. According to Meituan's report, the average time it takes to make a food delivery dropped from 38 minutes in 2016 to 29 minutes in 2019. Many delivery platforms are also offering more services, delivering products such as fruit, vegetables, medicine and flowers. As its services continue to improve, it's likely that the food delivery industry will keep growing.
13. My daughter is 6 years old. I let her take two courses. One was traditional Chinese dance, and the other was child modeling. She quickly picked up the latter (后者).
She has modeling classes once a week. I'm sure that the classes will make her more confident (自信的).
Before, my daughter was too afraid to take the subway because she would have to meet so many people. Her little face would turn pale with fear. That meant she always stayed at home, so I thought it necessary to take her out more to see the outside world.
After taking the classes for more than a year, I noticed her progress. She dares to speak with strangers. Even on the T-stage, she can behave herself. So attending modeling classes was the correct decision for her.
On the stage, she is serious and cool. But after classes or a performance, she becomes a lively kid again.
If she has a chance to be a T-stage show model, I won't refuse the invitations for her. I will support her to do these jobs in her free time if she wants.
I think parents shouldn't impose (强加) their ideas on their children because it's unfair to them. In the future, if she has an interest in physics or English, I will also continue to support her.
14. Do you like travelling alone? Here are four best places to travel alone.
A big part of Australian culture is single travel. You can easily get around Australia. The Australian cities are quite beautiful and there are many things to do, especially in Sydney. You can visit the Opera House, take a boat trip across the harbor (港口), climb the bridge or just relax on the beach.
Iceland has a great culture and beautiful landscapes (风景). It's a perfect place for a single traveler. Try to plan your visit to concur with (与……一致) the northern lights for a really special experience and try the geothermal (地热的) bath with natural hot water in the centre of snow.
Costa Rica is one of the best places for the adventurous (爱冒险的) single travelers. There are rainforests to explore, volcanoes (火山) to climb, and a few most wonderful beaches on the earth. You can also take a zip line ride (乘坐高空缆车) through the jungle, and try out kayaking (划独木舟) on the rivers.
Amsterdam is a very walkable (适于行走的) city with a wonderful biking culture. You can visit the city's canals (运河) and historic canal houses on a canal cruise (运河游船) or on foot, and make sure to visit the Rijks Museum, the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. The best time to go to Amsterdam is on Queen's Day when the city turns into a big party.
15. Glaciers are large bodies of ice and snow. Because they're so icy, it's very hard for things to live on them. But glacier mice do somehow.
Of course, glacier mice aren't mice. They are round balls of moss (苔藓) that can grow to about the size of a tennis ball. They're usually found in groups near small rocks on the surface of icy glaciers.
Normal moss can't form on a glacier, so scientists believe glacier mice probably form around something small, like a bit of dust. Because staying on the ice too long would kill the moss, glacier mice form into a ball. It allows them to move around, so that their different parts touch the ice at different times.
Some scientists once did an experiment on glacier mice. They put a small device inside 30 glacier mice to follow their movements. They learned that the mice traveled about 2.5 centimeters a day. They seemed to move in groups. They moved in the same direction and at about the same speed almost like a group of animals. The scientists tested several ideas that might explain how the mice moved together, such as rolling downhill, being blown by the wind, or following the sun. None of these explained the movement of the glacier mice.
Glacier mice are still a mystery to scientists. For their next experiment, the scientists said they would use cameras to take pictures of the movements of the mice over a long period of time. Are you looking forward to the answer?
16. Earth Day has been marked on 22 April every year since its beginning in 1970. This year, organizers are calling for three days of climate action, from 20 to 22 April, but expect the whole week running up to Earth Day—sometimes called Earth Week—to be a time when environmental problems take centre stage.
Earth Day is an annual (每年的) event designed to pay attention to the serious environmental problems we're facing, from the climate problems to air pollution and forest cutting. Earth Day is celebrated to call for people around the world to protect the environment.
The first Earth Day was in 1970, which highlighted (强调) the importance of clean air and clean water. And it became an international movement in 1990.
This year's theme is Restore Our Earth. It focuses not only on the need to reduce our influence on the planet as we recover from the effects of COVID-19, but also on how we can play a role in repairing the damage we've done. We should look at natural processes, green technologies, and creative thinking that can make a lasting influence to restore our earth.
How can you take part in the Earth Day activities? Organizers help to organize activities around the world each year. You can plant a tree, reduce our carbon footprint, use less plastic, use less water and electricity or even eat less meat. We can all work together to make our world a little greener.
The future of our planet depends on our efforts. What we should do is to make every day Earth Day.
