13. Hi, I'm Meghan and I work as a reporter (记者) for Teens. I hope I can help you with your problem.
Dear Meghan,
I'm an outgoing girl. I like to make friends, but no one wants to make friends with me. They think I am annoying (讨厌的). I am very sad. I don't know what to do!Can you help me work out the problem? Sunshine
Dear Sunshine,
I know it can be hard to make friends sometimes. But you don't want to be friends with people who are not very nice to you. So just be yourself, and this may sound strange, but you don't have to try so hard either. I think the best way to make new friends is to find people you have things in common (共同的) with. If there's a game or sport you like to play, ask people to play with you. It's a fun way to start talking to people. You will also find people who have the same interests. Meghan Horihan
14. For ten weeks, in a great house on the island of St Thomas, Dr. John C. Lilly tried to teach a dolphin to speak English. Margaret Howe, an experiment (试验) helper, would live day and night with Peter, a dolphin (海豚). And they would eat, sleep and play together from Sunday to Friday, with only Saturdays off for Margaret. She lived her life in swimming clothes — with a coat on colder evenings — and cut her hair short so that she could get on with Peter more easily.
After a few days, Peter was becoming more and more interested in Margaret. Again and again he threw a ball to her to get her to play. As time went by, he only wanted to play ball with her and not on his own.
The problem was that, just at the time Peter and Margaret began to get on well just like two best friends, the experiment finished and the lab (实验室) was closed. Margaret left the place and then went home. After a few weeks, Margaret heard the sad news that Peter had killed himself by staying at the bottom of his pool quietly.
Dolphins may not speak English — but, just like humans (人类) , they could also feel sad when they lose their best friend.
15. A man sat at an underground (地铁) station in Washington, D. C. , and began to play the violin. It was a cold day in January. He played six Bach (巴赫) pieces for about 45 minutes. Thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by and the first person, a middle﹣aged man, began to find that there was a musician playing. He stopped for some minutes, listened carefully and then went on to his work.
After a minute, a young woman began to put some money in the box before him and started to walk again. Then another two or three minutes went by and someone stood and listened to him for some time, but the young man looked at his watch and began to walk again — he was late for work.
From the beginning to the end, only six people stopped and stayed for some minutes, twenty gave him money but went on to walk. When he finished playing, no one applauded (鼓掌). No one knew that the man playing the violin was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world.
This is a real story. The Washington Post(《华盛顿邮报》) asked Joshua Bell to do the experiment. What do we learn from this story? If we do not have time to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music, how many other things are we missing?
16. It was a warm sunny day. Mrs. Smith got off the bus and went into a butcher (屠夫) shop. Today, her aunt would come to visit her, so she decided to buy some nice meat for dinner.
As she was going into the shop, a young man followed her into the shop and stood behind her. After a minute, Mrs. Smith gave a loud scream (尖叫). The man turned quickly and ran out of the shop.
When Mrs. Smith screamed, a policeman was walking in the street, just outside of the shop. The man saw the policeman and got a terrible surprise. He was so scared that he couldn't move. The policemen stopped him, and found a gun (枪) from him.
  "What's this?" The policeman asked.
"No, no, it's not mine…" The man screamed.
The policeman took him into the police station. The young man was a robber (抢劫犯).
The butcher was very afraid. "Thank you, Mrs. Smith. Your scream saved me!" the butcher said, "but how did you know he was a robber?"
"Me?No, I didn't know that he was a robber. " said Mrs. Smith.
"But why did you scream?" The butcher asked in surprise.
"Well, I screamed because the meat was too expensive. " answered Mrs. Smith.
