13. One Sunday afternoon, my father and I were waiting to buy tickets for the circus (马戏表演). Finally, there was only one family between the ticket office and us. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children talked excitedly about the circus show. It was clearly a very important day for them. The father and mother were also very happy. The ticket lady asked the man how many tickets he wanted. The man answered, "Eight children's tickets and two adults' (成人的) tickets. "The ticket lady told him the price. There was no longer a smile on the man's face. He quietly asked, "How much did you say?"The ticket lady again told him the price.
It seemed that he didn't have enough money. But how could he tell his kids the bad news?
Seeing what was happening, my father took out a $20 note (纸币) and dropped it on the ground (地面). (We were not rich ourselves at all!) He then said to the man, "Excuse me, sir, you dropped this. "
The man understood my father was helping him. He picked up the note, looked into my father's eyes, and replied, "Thank you. This really means a lot to me and my family. "
Although my father and I didn't go to the circus that day, we were very happy.
14. Did you have a bad day yesterday? If you have one bad day after another, you need to learn the 90/10 secret (秘诀).
  A bad start
Jack's daughter, Emily, knocked over (打翻) a cup of milk and it fell on his trousers at breakfast yesterday. Jack got annoyed. He shouted at his daughter and she started to cry.
"Why did you shout at her?" asked his wife. "Why did you put the cup on the edge (边缘) of the table?" replied Jack. Then he went to change his trousers.
Because she was upset, Emily didn't get ready for school in time and she missed her bus. Jack had to drive Emily to school. Because he didn't have enough time, he forgot his bag. He was forty minutes late for work. As soon as he got there, he had to go home again to get his bag.
Did it have to be a bad start?
Again the milk fell on Jack's trousers, but this time he didn't shout. He smiled and said, "It's OK. Don't worry!" Then he went to change his trousers. When he came back, Emily said, "Bye, Daddy. " And she ran out to catch her bus. Jack went to work early, and he had a great day.
  So, here's the 90/10 secret.
Ten percent of life is what happens to us. We can't control it. That's life. Things happen and we have to deal with (应对) them.
Ninety percent of life, however, is how we deal with it. Remember that when something bad happens next time.
15.Dear Sally,
You asked me who did the housework at my home in your last letter. In fact, we do it together.
I live with my family and my pet cat Leah. I have one sister and one brother. We share the housework with our parents. My mother cooks for us and washes our clothes. My father fixes anything broken at home. Every morning, my brother takes out the rubbish. Every evening, my sister, Emily, washes the dishes after dinner and I sweep the floor. She also helps my mother with shopping every Tuesday evening. Every Friday, I wash my father's car.
What about you?Do your family do the housework together?
Yours,
Adam
Dear Adam,
My sister Joanna is too young to do the housework, so my parents and I share it. I make my own bed and take out the rubbish. Every Thursday afternoon, my parents go shopping and I take care of my sister. My father fixes things in the house. My mother cooks our meals and washes our clothes. Last month, my father bought me a pet dog. I named it Paige. I take it for a walk every day. It's very cute.
Next month, my parents will take me to see one of their friends in your city. I hope I can visit you then.
Yours,
Sally
