12. I always think my daughter Kendall is the best — that's just what parents do. When she was only three, she sang for the people, like a little angel(天使).
When Kendall was five, we noticed that she sometimes had a tic (面部抽搐). When the problem got worse, we took her from doctor to doctor. During the treatment, Kendall continued to sing. Surprisingly, her tics disappeared when she sang.
When Kendall was sixteen, we thought she would be healed and be healthy soon. However, a terrible thing happened.
At a party, Kendall jumped on a friend for a piggyback ride. He bent(弯腰)lower than she expected, and she jumped higher than he expected. Kendall flew over his back and landed on the floor — on her neck. She was rushed to hospital, paralyzed(瘫痪)from the neck down. She couldn't move. But her biggest worry wasn't whether she would walk again, but was whether she could try out for a show called American Idol(《美国偶像》).
As the days went on, feeling on her left side returned, but she was still paralyzed on the right. We weren't sure how much of her movement would come back. A friend brought a microphone(麦克风)and put it on her bed. Every day, Kendall tried hard to pick it up. It was more important for her to pick up that microphone than a spoon or fork.
Sometimes she had to bite(咬)a toothbrush to take her mind off the pain. We all cried because of the pain we saw. But on the day, only three months after her accident, we cried full of joy when she sang, though she didn't enter the Top 24 of American Idol.
When she was a little girl, she asked me why it was she that had tics. My heart hurt, but I told her, "Kendall, you have a pure heart, a fantastic voice, a strong mind. And you are a beautiful presence(存在). "
13. "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go to do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive, " said Howard Thurman. Yes, one of the best ways to learn about other people and other places is visiting, connecting and experiencing them yourself. Traveling around the world opens your mind.
I remember when I was traveling, I began to know the world better. The world is not just about me, my small town and home. Although you will meet different people from all over the world, you will realize that people are similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings. Enjoy exploring the different cultures, and you will also find that people are different in some of the things they do and how they live. Once you understand their ways, it will not be strange or scary. Often you read stories about other cultures in books. Only when you visit their areas do you find that those stories are sometimes wrong.
One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. You cannot just get money to be sent to these areas and hope that will work them out. The world should get involved and help wherever there are problems. People everywhere should be given a chance. It is so easy to ignore(忽视)this if one does not travel or explore. One can look around and see that so many people have many challenges bigger than ours. One can realize that sometimes our biggest problems are not that big after all.
On your journey you will meet a lot of new friends. Talking to strangers and finding about their lives is a great way to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to deal with problems and make many decisions along the way.
When you travel, you have to be on your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you can do that. All your special experiences could make an interesting book to read. It would be filled with all your adventures(冒险)and special memories.
Traveling around and seeing so much happening in the world around us is a wonderful experience. If we could all just travel a little more and share our experiences, we would all be better people and the world would be a better place.
14. The UN Environment Program says that rising temperatures could mean the end of some migrating (迁徙) animals. Migrating animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold areas in winter to warmer ones. Birds may fly from one part of the world to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds on the way. Whales and turtles (海龟) travel through huge areas of ocean. A report says that changes in any one of the places where these animals stay can cause serious problems. "Obviously these animals have developed their traveling ways over thousands of years. But weather changes much greater over the next 25 to 50 years. And it is impossible for these animals to change their habits fast enough, " said the report writer Dr. Robert Hepworth.
Turtles (海龟) are hit hardest by rising temperatures. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures turtles have far more female (雌的) eggs than male (雄的) ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtles are only giving birth to female babies. And some turtles are more probable to be sick as the waters get warmer.
With birds, the main problem is the harm to important areas at the end of their travels or at resting places along the way. About one fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of these changes, including rising sea levels, land loss and more strong storms.
Some other animals are now in great danger. For example, the North Atlantic Right Whale is losing its food because of the changing ocean flows. The White﹣Nose Dolphin is out-competed (淘汰) by other kinds in warmer waters.
The report is not all bad news, though. Even with the temperature changing, protecting the environment can still help migrating animals return. "We need governments to start taking action all over the world. We should make full use of every minute, " said Dr. Hepworth. And now some projects are already working!Whales are changing their feeding habits, finding new feeding grounds and new foods to eat.
15. Boys and girls, put up your hand if you have a habit of repairing your tiring body by sleeping in (睡懒觉) on weekends. (1)      .
The ten-day study came out in the magazine Current Biology. Volunteers were divided into three groups. The first group enjoyed nine hours' sleep each night. (2)      The third group were given five hours sleep Monday through Friday. And then they were allowed to sleep as much as they liked over a weekend. But they were put back on the short sleep schedule the next Monday.
  (3)       They also saw a decrease (减少) in insulin sensitivity (胰岛素敏感性), a warning sign for diabetes (糖尿病). Researchers have long known lack of sleep can increase health risks. But it was surprising that the third group had been worse than the second one.
"People in the third group slept as much as they could on the weekend. (4)      " said Dr. Kenneth Wright, who led the study. "When they went back to the short sleep schedule the next week, their body failed to control blood sugar. That was partly because their biological clock (生物钟) had been changed."
So what should we do if sleeping in over the weekend is not a good choice? (5)       Cut out the "sleep stealers" such as watching television shows or spending time on computers or mobile phones. Always remember:Getting enough sleep is as important as having good eating habits or doing exercise regularly.

G. Both the second and third groups ate more snacks at night and put on weight.
16. Why are so many people so afraid to fail?Quite simply because no one tells us how to face the failure(失败). In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the chance to fail.
Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of parents choose this way. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as "perfect" even though it doesn't stand stable(牢固的). The other way is to blame(责怪)others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There's a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don't meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything. No one can win all the time. The young should be allowed to experience failure.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown﹣ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it.
