12. Several months ago, 8﹣year﹣old Alex McKelvey set out to do some nice things for people she didn't even know.
For the past year, since her grandmother Linda died, the Washington girl and her family have performed hundreds of acts of kindness.
"This is what her life was about, giving to others, " Alex said. She recently reached a goal that helped her family and hundreds of people who've received their special gifts.
Alex was up before dawn on Sunday volunteering in a local town. That alone could have been her good deed for the day. But she was just getting started. By 8 am, the McKelveys were ready for breakfast at a restaurant where they would complete their next task.
Before they paid their bill, they asked the server to swipe their card for a couple sitting a few tables away. But Alex wasn't done yet. She then handed her server a 100﹣dollar tip.
"Thank you, you guys are too sweet!" the server said, holding back tears.
But these good deeds aren't as random (随机的) as you might think. They' re part of an important list. "Sixty﹣one different acts of kindness, " said Sarah McKelvey, Alex's mom. And that was just for Sunday. The McKelveys have taken a lot of time over the past year to make other people's days. "It's been fun to come up with all these ideas, but it also kind of helps us too, " said Sarah.
In all, the McKelvey family completed 600 acts of kindness in time for what would have been Linda's 60th birthday on Sunday.
13. When shopping for clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on what fits me well. To me, if it zips (拉上拉锁), it fits. My mom, however, usually says I need a bigger size.
When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it impossible. When mom told me something didn't suit me, or that I needed a bigger size, all I heard was that my body was wrong.
To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together. This continued until I got engaged(订婚) and needed to find a wedding dress (婚纱). I could have just bought it alone, of course, but my mom is my favorite person to hang out with. The idea of looking for a wedding dress without her seemed as scary as taking her with me.
And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom's eyes. "You look beautiful, " she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more.
This one didn't zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother didn't say that. She just told me how beautiful I looked. At that moment, all those arguments we'd had while shopping in the past were laid to rest. We didn't buy a dress that day. We decided to see more, which I would never have predicted (预见).
A few weeks and many shopping trips later, we found the perfect dress. And during those few weeks, mom and I also found the perfect fit for our shopping relationship.
14. Teachers and headmasters in Chinese schools are asked to eat with students in dining rooms at' every meal. The new rule was carried out on April 1, 2019. According to the Ministry of Education, the introduction of the rule is a way of making sure of the safety, nutrition and health levels of school food.
School leaders from kindergartens to high schools should get together with students during school meals. The plan will guide them to pay more attention to food safety at school.
This move came after a list of school food safety problems in the past few years. In March, 2019, moldy (发霉的) food was found in a primary school dining room in Chengdu. The news led to people's worries. Parents asked to make sure of school food safety.
Under the new rule, schools are asked to tell where. the food comes from, who offers        and other information. The rule says schools should help students get into healthy eating habits. It also invites parents to eat with students at school to make them less worried.
In the United States, obesity rates (肥胖率) have kept rising over the past thirty years. The new law introduced by Michelle Obama has pushed schools to make low﹣calorie(卡路里) menus. Even the healthiest choices are commonly provided by large food companies.
Schools in Japan also give children a homemade meal for lunch. The food is grown locally and almost is never frozen. The meals are often made by cooks from the beginning. And they're balanced but heavy on rice, vegetables and fish.
15. You know you have to read"between the lines'"to get the most out of anything. I want to tell you something important during your reading.
You shouldn't mark a book which isn't yours. (1)      If you think it useful to mark books, you will have to buy them.
There are two ways in which one can own a book. The first is to get the right by paying for it, just as you pay for clothes and furniture. But full ownership comes only when you have made it a part of yourself. (2)      .
There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the best sellers﹣﹣unread and untouched. The second has a great many books. (3)      . The third has a few dog﹣eared (翻折的)books, which are marked from front to back. Why is marking a book necessary? First, it keeps you awake. In the second place, reading is thinking. (4)      . The marked book is usually the thought﹣through book. Finally, writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts the writer expressed.
If reading is to learn anything more than passing time, it must be active. The book you read for pleasure can be read in a state of relaxation, and nothing is lost. But for a great book, rich in ideas, reading must be active. (5)      .
You should come up with an understanding of what you have read.

A. You can't let your eyes move across the lines.
