14. My father was good at playing the guitar. He was one of the best guitar players in our town. He could not read music, but if he heard a tune a few times, he could play it. When he was young, he was a member of a small country music band.
Dad loved to take out his guitar and play for the family. We three children:Trisha, Monte and I, would often sing along. We often sang songs such as Tennessee Waltz, Harbor Lights and the well-known song Silver Bells. During every Christmas, "Silver Bells, Silver Bells, it's Christmas time in the city... would ring throughout the house. Another song King of the Wild Frontier was a favorite song for the family. It was a song in the Walt Disney program: Davey Crocket. Dad only had to hear the song twice before he learned it well enough to play it. He knew we enjoyed the song and the program and would often get out the guitar after the program was over. Our house was full of music and laughter.
Dad loved to give pleasure to his family. We enjoyed singing and hearing him play. He liked that.
He was always there, sacrificing (付出) his time and efforts to see that his family had enough in their life. Nobody played the guitar like my father. He could touch your soul with his music. He wore big smiles on his kind face when we children sang along. You could see his pride in his ability to play the guitar so well for his family.
15. Japan recently showed the world's first Dual-Mode Vehicle (DMV), a mini-bus-like train which runs both on roads, like a bus, and on rails, like a train.
It looks just like a bus but it definitely makes an impression in terms of practical use. It runs with normal rubber tires (轮胎) on the road. But when it needs to become the train mode, the front tires will be lifted up, and the back wheels stay down to push the vehicle. The change from bus to train takes only about 15 seconds.
"The DMV can work as a bus and run onto the railway as well, " Shigeki Miura, CEO of As a Coast Railway, told Reuters. "We expect it to help many old people in the countryside. We also hope it can attract tourists with its many beautiful colors."
It can carry up to 21 passengers and run at a speed of 60 km/h in train mode, and up to 100 km/h as a bus.
Shigeki Miura also told the news reporter confidently that the special vehicle could help small towns like Kaiyo with an aging and shrinking (减少的) population. In these places, it is more and more difficult for conventional (传统的) transportation companies to make money. In the near future, many more DMVs will connect several towns, covering part of the coast of Shikoku island and offering passengers pretty seaside views.
16. Tomatoes are the most popular crop among American home gardeners. The smell of homegrown tomatoes will make you think of lovely summers. An advantage of growing your own tomatoes is variety (品种丰富). If you visit a garden center, you will find seeds (种子) and small starter plants for yellow tomatoes, purple tomatoes, huge tomatoes, and even very small tomatoes. There are kinds you simply can't find at a local food store.
Garden writer Jessica Damiano loves tomatoes. In fact, she created and hosted The Great Long Island Tomato competition while working for a local newspaper in New York. The celebrations of people who love tomatoes or "tomatophiles" continued for 13 years. One tomato that was entered into the competition weighed more than 2. 3 kilos.
Damiano also got to meet and speak with the competitive tomato growers who raised the winning fruits. It did not take long for her to notice some common practices among them.
First, start seeds early indoors and then plant them into larger containers before moving them outdoors. Plant them deeply into the soil, about 30 cm above the ground. This will produce strong plants.
Then, give the tomatoes plenty of water, soft soil, heat and light. It is best to grow tomatoes in a place that receives at least six hours of sunlight each day. Remember to remove weeds (杂草) because this can protect tomatoes from diseases and pests, giving the plants enough nutrients to produce fruit.
Last but not least, tomatoes grow best in soil with a pH level between 6. 0 and 6. 8. If the pH reading is lower than 6. 0, you can add about 2 cups of lime into the soil for each plant. Make sure to mix it deep into the soil.
If you want to grow really big tomatoes, try those tips from expert growers and you may have a big harvest!
17. The Dragon Boat Festival (端午节) is known as Double Fifth Festival, because it falls on the fifth of the fifth lunar month. (1)它有两千多年的历史。It has deeply influenced Chinese people's life and now the influence has expanded to many other different countries, like the UK and the USA.
There are many traditional customs like making and eating zongzi. Zongzi are little pyramid﹣shaped snacks wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are a traditional food made from delicious rice filled with meat, eggs or nuts. (2)When eating zongzi people will think of a great person — Qu Yuan. As the government official of the kingdom of Chu in the Warring States period(475 BC﹣221 BC), he jumped into the Miluo River when his own country was occupied by the State of Qin. (3)古时候的人们会往江中抛洒米饭。By doing so, ancient people believed the fish would eat the rice instead of Qu's body. This is traditionally the origin of zongzi as the food during the festival.
Besides eating zongzi, Chinese families, especially those living in the south and near water, usually go to watch dragon boat races. (4)Dragon boat racing is an activity that needs teamwork. It also has a strong connection with local water culture.
Those customs are rooted in the culture of the Chinese people. They have been listed as the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) of China. (5)As a Chinese, it is our duty to protect the intangible cultural heritage.
18. Lucy, a nine-year-old little girl, grew up in a small village near a forest. She liked feeding birds bread and knew a lot about them.
One summer morning, she was listening to birds' joyful singing when she heard a sharp whistle (哨声) not far away. It wasn't a friendly bird's whistle but a whistle of a person.
"Hello, little girl," a young man greeted cheerfully. Lucy looked up into a face of a tall young man carrying a gun. Then the young man explained that he was a scientist, who collected birds.
"Do you put them in a cage?" Lucy asked. "No," he answered slowly, "I shoot them and keep them with special chemicals (药剂). I have over 100 different kinds of birds from all over the United States at home." Lucy felt surprised to hear that. "I have been looking for a heron (苍鹭) not far from here. It's a tall, white, strange bird with long thin legs. It often lives at the top of a tall tree. Have you seen it?I will give $10 to the person who shows me where the white bird is." said the man.
Lucy's heart began to beat fast. She knew that strange white bird! She had seen it on the other side of the forest. She remembered how the white bird came flying through the golden air every morning. But Lucy decided not to speak a word. She would not tell the bird's secret and give its life away. They were good friends. So Lucy shook her head and the young man had to go away disappointedly.
