3. A four-year-old girl is lying in the arms of a doctor. She has just lost her mother. Her pink clothes are full of blood and her eyes look at something only she can see.
Every day we see pictures like this on TV. We see Iraqi(伊拉克) children asking for food and water from American and British soldiers when they move through towns and cities towards the capital, Baghdad.
We see these children following parents, carrying bags of almost the same size as their small bodies when they escape from their homes in Baghdad.
They show just some of the young lives that have been turned upside by ongoing war.
"Dad, why are the Americans fighting against us? Are we going to be killed?" asked the son of Abu, an Iraqi engineer. Abu finds it hard to explain this war to his eight-year-old son. He tries to make him feel safe by saying. "The bombs are far away from us. The Americans are fighting the soldiers. We're going to be all right. " Even though Abu knows it isn't always true, nothing else can be done. In Baghdad, parents give their children sleeping pills to try and let them escape from the sounds of bombs. And all schools are closed.
Now things are worse, and the ongoing war makes it impossible to count the numbers who are hungry, sick, hurt or even dead.
4. In the past, if you want to learn something new, you might have to go to school or some other places to attend a class. But nowadays, there is no need for you to do so because of the appearance of the online learning. Last year, the online learning market was worth $166. 5 billion. In the latest survey of Global Shapers, among 25, 000 young people across the world, 77. 84% of them reported having taken online courses.
However, the growth of online education has not been without challenges. Since its early start in the 1960s, online education has been always criticized (批评) by some people for being short of quality control, especially for being short of high-quality teachers. It's also been said that online learning keeps students away from some of the advantages of being in a classroom, such as the communication between the teacher and the students face to face. Besides, being in a classroom doesn't always demand the Internet connection and the electricity supply.
Regardless of these concerns, online education has made great improvements in recent years. For starters, more and more schools of higher learning have introduced or improved their online education platforms. And a number of providers have also turned to user ratings (评价). "Star teacher", for example, has become a popular rating method in some countries. It commonly uses star symbols to show users' opinions about teachers and their lessons, which helps good teachers stand out from others.
Such progress seems to have reduced the doubt about the quality of teaching, and 40. 56% of people in the survey of Global Shapers have said online education is as strong as traditional learning in a classroom.
The development of education technology has also made online education become easier to get and more controllable than ever before. What a student needs are a computer, an Internet connection, and some basic IT skills. As for losing some advantages of a traditional classroom, online education has been making up for this through its flexibility (灵活性) and low cost. Besides, some people say that online education has greatly helped make easier to get, thus achieving the goal of "education for all".

6. Swallows are common birds that carry auspicious (吉祥的) meaning in China. Architects (建筑师) made a flying "snow swallow" in the mountains. It is the National Alpine Skiing Center in the Yanqing competition zone, known as "Xuefeiyan". "The trail (雪道) are placed on the southern slopes of Xiaohaituo Mountain, just like the wings of a swallow," said architect Liang Xu.
The blueprint for the design came from Liang and his coworkers of the China Architecture Design and Research Group. The trails total 21 kilometers, including seven main ski runs that are about 9. 4 km long in total. The largest vertical (垂直的) drop is about 900 meters.
A feature of the center is that its trails fit in with the local environment. "We aim to affect the environment—mountains and plants—as little as possible," said Liang. "It goes with a traditional Chinese idea harmony between man and nature."
The alpine skiing trails are dangerous. Their average slope is 17 degrees, with some over 34 degrees. When picking slopes to build trails, architects prefer those that don't need too much building work. "We aim for a balance between the soil we removed and that which we filled in." Liang said. "In other words, you dig up some soil here, but you can use it to fill other places."
Architects also borrowed some ideas from traditional Chinese architecture. In the mountainous southern part of China, stilted buildings are popular. "It's a very smart design. The houses are built above poles so that they don't affect mountain bodies," Liang said. So they built some stilted platforms and houses that are made up of removable steel parts. "After the events, they can be easily removed. The mountain can stay as it was before the event," said Liang.
Liang started to take part in the design in 2017. "I feel proud to have worked for the center for five years and look forward to skiers showing their tricks on our trails," he said.
