试卷题目
1. Many kids are crazy about space. Last month, a space agency (机构) told the public that they were (1)       "a planet protection officer." Some people laughed at the funny job title, but a 9-year-old boy took the information(2)      . He wrote a letter to the agency, saying that he wanted the job.
"Dear sirs, my name is Sam Lee. I think I am the (3)       person for the job," he wrote.
What are Sam's (4)      ? For one, he wrote, "My sister says I act like an alien (外星人)" Sam also said he had watched almost all the (5)       movies he could find. His last sentence may touch
people's hearts: "I am young, so I can learn to think like an alien."
Sam soon got a (6)       from Bill Black, director of the agency. "We have received your letter. It is great that you are interested in the job. This job is to (7)       the earth from germs (细菌) on things brought back from other planets." Bill ended the letter with some warm words, (8)       Sam to study hard and do well in school. "We hope to (9)       you at the agency one day." he wrote.
"Among kids, there are (10)       space scientists." Bill told a newspaper. "We think of this letter as a chance that may forever change our kids' life."
2.Name: Stella by Starlight
Type: Historical novel
Number of pages: 352 pages
  What's the basic storyline?
Stella and her family were living peacefully in a small North Carolina town in 1932 until Stella and her brother saw, in the darkness of the night, a burning cross, the symbol of the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan is a secret organization in the United States. It is made up of white people who don't like people of other races (种族) and do harm to them. Things really started to turn bad when a neighbor's house was burned down. In her small town, Stella didn't know whom to trust. Could Stella find the courage to stand up for what's right?
  Are the characters believable?
Some parts of the characters are not believable. The characters, for example, are either all good or all bad. I prefer characters that are more different and conflicted (矛盾的). The plot, however, is so attractive that I don't mind. And I always read it for a long time without having a rest. Overall, the writer wisely tells the story through the characters' points of view.
  _______△_____
I think people who enjoy reading historical novels and adventure stories will really like Stella by Starlight. People who are interested in learning the history of black and white people in America will especially enjoy this book.
From 1 to 10, which score will you give this book?
I will give Stella by Starlight 9 because of its amazing plot and good descriptions. I really love the book because the author often leaves the readers a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter so that the readers can't help thinking about the rest of the story and won't be able to put this book down.
3. Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference (参考) by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Often it happens that a place has two names:One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries — in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were at first from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named after former British military bases (军事基地). If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus — obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel (人员).
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, "Base Basah" means "wet rice" in Malay (马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road "Wet Rice Road"?The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is "Circular Road" for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like "Paya Lebar Crescent". This road is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.
4. While Jennifer was at home taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.
Using a web camera equipped in Jennifer's Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked-remotely-to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was:Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past?Or was she slowing down?
In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting edge and a key to encourage honesty in the booming field of online education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid — that students haven't just searched the Internet to get the right answers.
Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of "open online courses." Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field, spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.
Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among them are programs that check students' identities using personal information, such as the telephone number they once used.
Other programs can produce unique exam by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test question are answered at the same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, term papers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.
5. Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. (1)       But there's one person in China who is called the "teacher of teachers".
He is Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi. Last year marked the 130 anniversary of his birth. People in different parts of China commemorated (纪念) Tao by visiting his memorial halls or holding meetings to reflect on his thoughts on education.
Born in Anhui province, China, 1891, Tao studied at Columbia University, US, in 1914. (2)      . But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly copy Dewey's education method or theories. For Tao, education is an active process in real﹣life experiences rather than one of telling and being told. He proposed (提出) "unity (融合) of teaching, learning, and reflective acting".
  (3)
After conducting surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that the rate of urban illiteracy (文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. (4)      To deal with the lack of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal college (晓庄师范学院) in the northern suburbs of Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at rural schools.
  (5)       He set up Yucai Middle School in the suburbs of Chongqing and offered free education to refugee (避难) children after the Japanese invasion of China began in 1937.
Maybe Tao's motto is the best explanation for his life, "Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass."

A. There he studied educational philosophy under the guidance of John Dewey, an American philosopher and educational reformer (改革家).
B. Even during the anti-Japanese war, Tao never forgot his ambition.
C. To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working.
D. They are tasked with the mission to spread knowledge ideas and truth.
E. On the voyage (航行) of life, he kindled the light of hope for everyone.
F. Apart from reforming education methods, Tao also tried his best to promote mass education (大众教育).
6. The journey of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was marked by many important things.
The places of these things now also become "red revolutionary bases (革命圣地)". The "red spirit"has a deep influence on lots of Chinese people, both old (1)       young.
For example, the CPC's birthplace of Jiaxing in Zhejiang is (2)       popular symbol of courage and pioneering (先锋) spirit. Jinggangshan in Jiangxi is known (3)       the "cradle (摇篮) of the Chinese revolution". Mao Zedong started the first revolutionary base there.
Other (4)      (place) such as Yan'an in Shaanxi and Linyi in Shandong are also "old revolutionary bases". The CPC worked together with people to fight (5)       wars. A hundred years have passed, and these "revolutionary bases" (6)      (change) greatly so far. Some of them are no longer poor villages, and others become popular tourist areas. There are many young people (7)       are trying their best to work for their hometowns in many ways.
How are the young people from these places (8)      (influence) by "red spirit"? How do they carry out the spirit in their (9)      (day) lives? To answer these questions, TEENS has interviewed several local young people. "Their stories showed that the 'red spirit' would never be out of time. It will keep (10)       (encourage) us to work hard, feel thankful and serve others," Wang Jie, a young man said.
