3. Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Musicians hear better, says study leader Nina Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. For example, when the violinists play in an orchestra (管弦乐队), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore(忽视) the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gotfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work?Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.
So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.

4. Chinese paper cutting is an art of cutting out pictures from paper with the help of a pair of scissors or a knife. In 2009, the Chinese paper cutting was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Paper cutting originated (起源) in China, which has been around for over 1,500 years. But long before that, when paper wasn't invented, Chinese people already used similar skills to make cutouts on leaves, leather and silk. It reached the top during the Qing Dynasty (1636﹣1912). From the common people to royal families (王室), paper cuttings could be seen everywhere.
In our daily life, the subjects of the paper cuttings can be anything, from historical events and fairy tale characters to plants and animals. The paper cuttings are so vivid that they look like real ones. In celebration of the Spring Festival, people usually make cutouts of the Chinese character "Fu" and put them on windows, walls and doors for good luck. Chinese character "Xi" is cut for the wedding ceremony.
Paper cutting may sound easy, but actually it's much difficult to do well. "You can't forget aesthetics (美学) when making Chinese paper cuttings. This art was invented for decoration from the very beginning," said Fang Jianguo, who has made paper cuttings for over 30 years. "Before doing it, you have to learn how to draw well. Without good drawing skills, you can't make good paper cuttings."
Paper cutting tradition also has new development. Li Baofeng is a 54-year-old folk artist. "Traditional paper cuttings are often made with red paper, which seems to be a little boring. So I want to make something new," says Li. "Scissors are still scissors. Techniques are improved based on traditional techniques." She has made works in different colors which have amazing 3 D effects.
Now more and more people love paper cutting works and buy them as gifts fo their friends.

15. How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends? What if the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered (递送)? This was how things worked not very long ago. Thanks to advances (进步) in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed greatly.
Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with our friends. Social media tools (社交媒体工具) let us see what our friends are busy with and maintain friendships.
The digital age (数字时代) also enables us to find people who share our interests. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.
But when you "friend" people online, does this mean that they really are your friends? It depends.
If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to remember that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person. Sometimes smiling photos can hide real problems. On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. A young person could be old;a woman could be a man;we could even be sharing our information with criminals.
But this doesn't mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although technology has changed the way we acquired (获得) friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.
