1. Lisa has always been overweight. She wanted to lose (1)      , not just because she wanted to look more beautiful and healthier, but also because it would make life easier. For example, it was difficult for Lisa (2)       ready-made clothes that would fit. She had to ask a tailor (裁缝) to make clothes that (3)       large enough. In school, she needed a special chair which was bigger and stronger than (4)       chairs. If she went for a walk, she got tired very (5)      . She was also (6)       about the way people treated her sometimes. "People look at me and even make fun of me. That's unfair! It's true that I'm overweight, but I don't think people (7)       treat me differently because I'm big. I can't enjoy (8)       dinner with my friends because I'm afraid of getting fatter." Her friends and family never made fun of her. (9)      , they tried to help her. They wanted her to be happy and healthy. (10)       Lisa was feeling sad, she didn't want to speak to anyone.
But now things are quite different. Last month her classmates were preparing for the School Art Week. Someone advised Lisa to play (11)       lead role of the proud Queen who was tall and fat. Lisa agreed and she practiced (12)      .

Now Lisa doesn't worry about being fat any more. She believes in the English saying, "Every dog has its day."

Suddenly, he heard a low voice. "Hello, Sir" The old man turned around, (2)       he saw no one. "I'm here." the voice came from beside his feet. The old man looked down and saw a beautiful flower.

" The flower went on, "My days have (6)       and I' m going to wither (枯萎). It makes me sad."
The old man laughed, "Yes, I am not young and don't have a lot of days left. But so what? (7)       waste such a lovely day on something that hasn't happened?" The flower didn't (8)       understand. The old man continued, "What's gone is gone. What' s to come is to come. You can't change it. 3. In the state of Qin, there was a man called Shang Yang. He was a statesman(政治家)and worked out many reforms(改革)for the state, like focusing(关注)on farming and giving rewards(奖励)to soldiers who were successful at war. But these reforms were not easily carried out at first. Most people didn't trust Shang.
To solve this problem, Shang came up with an idea. He put a thin wooden pole at the south gate of the capital of Qin. Many people came to see him.
Then, in front of the crowd, he said loudly, "The one who takes this pole to the north gate will get 10 gold pieces. "
It was a simple job and the reward was large. However, some time passed and no one stepped forward. They all thought Shang was joking.
Hearing no answer, Shang stepped forward and said, "The reward now goes to 50 gold pieces. "
This offer was unbelievable. Finally, a man from the crowd came forward. He put the pole on his shoulders and walked to the north gate. True to his word, Shang gave the man 50 gold pieces.
After that, the people of Qin were all talking about what Shang did at the south gate. They believed he was a man of his word. So when Shang began carrying out his reforms, the people followed him. Under these great reforms, Qin grew strong and unified all the states, becoming the first empire of China.
Credibility (诚信) is very important for everyone. It will help people believe what they say and respect them.
4. So, it's exam time again. Have you done the necessary work to get good marks?Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow doesn't work. The best way is to space your practice out, rather than cram (塞满) it all together. Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises, if you organize five hours of study into one hour a day, you'll remember more than if you study for five hours on one day.
Don't depend on memory alone. Get pens and paper, and start working!Students who can test themselves earlier will be better at retrieving (检索) the knowledge from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky, a professor in the US, suggests that "you start by reading a textbook with your favourite pens and colours, and then write down the important ideas on small cards. While doing so, you actually try to test yourselves on them."
Good revision should give you confidence, but if you are still worried, it's not harmful to follow some special customs. In Japan, it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and pork pieces. The name of the dish makes people think of the word "katsu", meaning "winning". For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their "lucky underwear".
The bottom line is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well on the eve of the test, and believe that your efforts will pay off.
  Good luck in your exam!
5. Do you like writing by hand or with a keyboard?
A new brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, shows that choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
"When you write your shopping lists or notes by hand, you simply remember things better after some time." said Audrey van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was done using equipment (设备) to track (跟踪) and record brain wave activity. 12 young adults and 12 children took part in the study. Each person was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a special cap with over 250 electrodes (电极). The sensors (传感器) in the electrodes picked up the electrical activity that took place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results show that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses become active by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build connection between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results show the importance of children's learning to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. "Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but it's important for children to experience the tiring step of learning to write by hand." she said.
The hand movements are good for us in many ways. "If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor (精细动作) skills and senses. It's important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible." Van der Meer added. "You might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should learn by hand during a class."
