11. Once upon a time , there was a great king. He had a smart servant and he always took the servant everywhere.
One day , the king got bitten (咬)by a dog. He asked the servant, "Is this some kind of bad luck?"
The servant said, "Good or bad, hard to tell." Then one day, the king lost his finger. He asked the servant again, "Is this some kind of bad luck?" The servant still replied, "Good or bad, hard to tell."
The king got very angry to hear the same words again. So he sent the servant to jail (监狱).
A few days later , some barbarians (野蛮人) caught the king. They wanted to kill the king for sacrifice (祭祀). However , they found that the king's fingers were not complete , so they decided to set the king free.
The king set the servant free as soon as he went back. He finally understood the servant's words "Good or bad , hard to tell." He said sorry to the servant but the servant wasn't angry with him at all. He told the king, "Something that seems to be bad can be good in later. If you didn't put me in jail, I would have to go with you and the barbarians would have killed me."
12. Last year, Bob visited Vancouver, Canada alone. He went there to give a talk on the environment (环境). When it was over, he travelled to the Rocky Mountains and stayed in the Maple Leaf Hotel. He then took a short walk to look at the local plants in the forest. After a few hours , he knew he took the wrong way , but was sure he could get back to the hotel.
However, after walking for, several hours the next day, Bob knew he was in trouble. "I had my mobile phone , but the battery (电池) was almost dead. I could probably make just one call. But I didn't know the number of my hotel and I didn't want to worry my family if I really didn't have to," said Bob.
He went on walking for three more days. He knew which plants he could eat and he had little trouble finding them.
On the fourth day , he knew there was no hope and decided to call his family. "He was quite calm when he spoke to me on the phone, " said Shirley , Bob's wife. "He seemed (似乎) to be in control (操控)of the situation." Shirley called the Maple Leaf Hotel at once. "That week lots of visitors went to the city to watch basketball games , and we thought Mr. Rigsby went there too," said the hotel owner. As soon as Shirley phoned , the, hotel sent out some people to look for Bob. They found him about one hour later, and luckily he was quite unhurt.
"I will never go to the forest without a guide. I never want an experience like that again," said Bob.
13. "Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person's life for the better , which makes everyone a better person." Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity (机会) to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization's expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also stops some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★Start out slowly , don't add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone's life.
★Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★Take part in a training meting for new volunteers , even if it is not asked.
★Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization's expectations.
★Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn't work , don't give up and you'll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people's lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, "things can change a person's life. "
