11. There is an old English saying: "Take the time to stop and smell the flowers." I think we should also take the time to (1)      flowers.
My grandmother knew just (2)      to do that. She grew flowers with earth, water and love, so her back garden was filled with beautiful flowers. She would smile when she saw the (3)      shone down on them. In her front garden she grew (4)      , too. You could see red, white, and yellow flowers in it. My mom and I used to take a (5)      around them and enjoy their smells. Grandma (6)      cared for the wild flowers. She would send me and my brother out to pick flowers. She would pour some water into the bottles and then put them into the bottles.
Grandma not only grew flowers in the gardens but also grew them in our (7)      . Her delicious dinners made with love encouraged us. Her sweet smile always made us (8)      . Her hugs (拥抱) and kisses were the sunshine that kept our own love (9)      day after day.
Take the (10)      to plant a few flowers yourself today. Show your smiles, kindness and love. Plant your wishes, talents and pleasure. Make this world brighter and brighter with your sunshine.
12. Ana is a 13-year-old swimmer who comes from Australia. Her dream is to swim for Australia in the next Olympics. She swims in both long and short races and she has already come first in many important competitions.
As well as spending many hours in the pool, Ana also makes time for studying and for friends. "I have lots of friends who swim and we are very close. It's much easier to have friends who are swimmers because they also have to get up early to practice like me and they understand this kind of life. But I'm not different from other people my age. "In my free time I also enjoy going to the movies and parties. There are also some good things about swimming for a club. I travel a lot for competitions and I've made friends with swimmers from other Australian cities and from other parts of the world."
Ana is becoming well known in Australia and she believes it is important to get more young people interested in swimming.
13. One day, in the English class, the students were learning the words about the parts of the body. Suddenly, Tom put up his hand and said to his teacher, "Mrs. Brown. I lost my baby tooth."
"Great," Mrs. Brown said. Then she asked the class if anyone had any advice for Tom.
Naoko, a Japanese girl, put up her hand first. "If it is a lower tooth, you should throw it over the roof of your house. If it is an upper tooth, you should put it under the floor. Then your new adult tooth will grow well."
"You shouldn't throw your baby tooth away, Tom. You should keep it and give it to your mother," said Jack, a French boy. "She will make it into a necklace (项链) for you to wear."
Gorge, who was from America, had some different advice. "You should take your tooth home and put it under your pillow (枕头) when you go to sleep. The tooth fairy (牙仙) will come to keep your tooth and give you good luck. Sometimes she even brings a small toy." "You should put your baby tooth under your pillow when you go to sleep, Tom. The little mouse may change it into a coin and bring you good luck," Harry, a Spanish boy said.
Tom liked Gorge's advice the best. Mrs. Brown said to him, "Whatever you decide, you should show your mother your tooth when you get home."
After getting home, Tom showed his mother his tooth and told her his plan. The next morning, Tom woke up and looked under his pillow. The tooth was gone. In its place, he found a dollar and a letter. This is what the letter said:
Dear Tom,
Great! You lost your first tooth. I will keep it forever. You should buy something nice for yourself with this money.
Love,
The Tooth Fairy

Shut Up
Zoos, Not Animals!
Mary August 5, 2021 15:12You may think that visiting zoos is fun, but you're wrong because zoos are just cages for animals. Animals in cages look bored. After all, we all know what an elephant looks like. We've seen them on TV. So why do we shut animals up for our fun?Shut up the zoos instead!

I partly agree. But some zoos aren't there for our fun. I've just got back from Jersey Zoo. It saves rare (珍稀的) animals. And it returns the babies to the wild. Not all zoos are the same, you know. Craig August 5, 2021 19:21Quite agree! Every time I go to the zoo, I never look into the poor animal's eyes! They are kept in the small and smelly cages, and they look so lonely and sad. Hope one day they will return to nature, where they can live happily and freely with their families. Daniel August 6, 2021 10:21 Personally, I think zoos are fantastic places for children. They can play with animals and enjoy themselves so much there. Also, they learn a lot about animals. Why shut up?
15. The modern world runs on energy. However, in the past human society used very little energy like wind, water and fire could provide. There are many different ways to create energy, but some ways are harmful to the environment.
Fossil fuels (化石燃料) are the most common kind of energy. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. First, people have to dig them from the ground. This can sometimes harm the environment. However, scientists are creating cleaner and better ways to do that these days. So the environment is not harmed as much as before. But when people burn these fossil fuels, they can give off a lot of harmful gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warming. This might harm the environment.
Tidal (潮汐) energy is another way to make electricity. It uses the ocean tides to make electricity. But some kinds of tidal energy can kill many fishes and other sea animals. Also dams can create lakes and lots of clean energy, but they change the way that rivers run. So they can do great harm to the balance of nature around the lakes and along the rivers.
Nuclear (核) energy is a very powerful form of energy. It is cheap and very clean. However, many people are afraid of it because there have been some very serious accidents in the past which caused great harm both to humans and nature. But the technology is much better these days. Many countries are starting to use nuclear energy more.
We live in an age when it is possible to use different kinds of energy. Whatever kind of energy we use, it should be good for people and environment.

Smartphones have really changed the way of communications. Smartphones are the most used communication tool today, whether it is for personal use or for work. Some people use their smartphones wisely while others use them almost all of the day which is very dangerous for their health. The suggestions below may help you reduce (减少) the harm they could do to your health.
When using your smartphone, try to keep it away from your body as much as possible.
Don' t put it on the bedside table when you go to sleep.
When you're on the smartphone, use the speaker. In this way, you have just 1/100th of the contact (接触) with radiation (辐射) you have when you hold it to your ear. An earphone is also a good idea.
Try to keep your conversations short. If you need to talk longer, use an ordinary phone instead.
Change ears when you're using your smartphone. Before putting it to your ear, wait until the person you are calling picks up the phone.
Your phone gives out radiation when you talk or send messages, but not when you're listening or getting messages. Listening more and talking less can lower the risk of health problems.
Do not use your smartphone when the signal (信号) is weak or when moving at a high speed, for example in a car or on a train. At high speeds your phone is trying to pick up signals, and this increases the radiation it gives out.

17.阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式.
People now like waiting in line and often say "Sorry" in daily life. One day when I was walking on the street, a young man ran by (1)      (hurried), brushing against my handbag. He continued (2)      (he) way, but didn't forget to say "Sorry" to me. Once, I went to a supermarket to buy some (3)      (vegetable). While I was reaching my hand for the change, a coin (4)      (drop) onto the ground. "Sorry", the assistant said and picked it up. Another time, I stepped (5)      a man's foot in a bank. At the same time, we both said "Sorry".
I hear people say "Sorry" not (6)      (little) than ten times each day. Slowly, I get to know that when something unpleasant (7)      (happen) in daily life, people don't care much about (8)      is wrong. They are (9)      (care) when they do things. However, they think (10)      "Sorry" is always necessary when getting anyone's way. Perhaps that is why I seldom see people argue on the buses or streets now.
