3. I've never thought that a fundraiser (募捐) could have had such a great influence on my life. Back in 5th grade, our school held a fundraiser and each class would get a box to fill it up with small change. To make my class become the first place in the fundraiser, I took two fifty-dollar bills secretly to school and put them into the box.
Two weeks later, my parents asked me about the money. They said they had discovered the truth and weren't angry, but I must do something to make up for it.
My dad had the perfect idea in mind. The day after Christmas, he took me to St. John's Hospice (收容所) , and explained to me that we were going to be working in the kitchen for several hours, making meals with potatoes and chicken for the 300~400 homeless men that came in each day.
As the lunch began, I thought I could get over this by playing with my new toys. But as the mealtime went on, I found these men were overjoyed at the simple food they were receiving. I considered it a fairly common winter meal. The men's faces lit up with the food they were given, I realized how poor some people in this world are. I had always heard about giving to the poor, but I never fully understood it until that day. I was shocked to see how thankful they were for something I thought was cheap.
That day I came to know how good the feeling is to help people who are really in need. I now return to St. John's Hospice every year, trying to make a difference. This is why I am becoming a doctor, thinking that in the future I will make a difference in people's lives just like my father did on that December 26th.
4. Uncle Tom 's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century. In the first year after it was published, 300,000 copies of the book were sold in the United States alone.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is thought to be one of the greatest books which helped change American history. The book talked about a terrible social problem-slavery (奴隶制) in the southern part of America. Before the book came out, there were over 3. 5 million slaves in the United States. Slaves were usually used in the cotton﹣growing states of the South. The northern states had ended the slavery. But most Northerners were Dot strongly against slavery. They did not mind that slavery continued in the South.
In 1852, Uncle Tom 's Cabin came out and excited the world! After that, more and more people began 10 realize how cruel (残酷的) the slavery was and care about the freedom of the black people. But the southern Americans were angry at the book. In 1861. the Civil War (内战) broke out in American history. It mainly rose from different conflicts between the North and South. The northern states fought the southern states as far as they could and finally won. This four-year war ended the slavery in the United States and helped l9th﹣century Americans find Out what kind of country they wanted.
Uncle Tom 's Cabin made Harriet Beecher Stowe, the writer, very famous. It is said that Abraham Lincoln greeted Stowe by saying, "So you' re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war."
5. Have you ever met a difficult person who always makes you have no idea about how to continue your conversation? When difficult people express themselves, they generally want at least two things:they can be heard and understood. (1)
The first step is to let the difficult person know that you're listening. In fact, through the way you look and sound while he is talking, you may help him to fully express his thoughts and feelings. You do this by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of understanding.
  (2)       It's a sign of step two:turning back. It means that you repeat back some words he is using, sending a clear sign that you are listening carefully and that you think what he is saying is important.
What is the next step? After hearing what he has said, it is understanding and summarizing (总结). Start to collect information about what is being communicated. Ask same open-ended questions, which will allow you to find out what he is hoping to express. (3)      . Summarizing helps you fill in the things you may miss. This will show the difficult person that you are making an effort to understand him. (4)      .
Listening, repeating, understanding and summarizing can make a difficult person become less difficult and more cooperative. The steps above will surely increase the possibility of a smooth communication. (5)      .

A. Then summarize
B. When the person begins to repeat what he has said
C. Ask him if he feels understood, when you summarize
D. Try these suggestions if you meet a difficult person next time
E. Here are four steps to help you communicate with this kind of people
6. In Western countries, some people think the number"13"brings bad luck. In the past, almost tall buildings didn't even have a 13th floor. However, there aren't really any other numbers that are special in this way in the West.
There are superstitions (迷信) about some numbers in China as well. For example, the number"4"is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for"death". But that's just one small example of China's obsession (迷恋) with numbers.
When I first came here, to my surprise, many websites had numbers in their names instead of letters. I soon found that this is actually a matter of convenience, as Chinese characters cannot be used for website addresses. They can only use numbers or the letters of the Roman alphabet (罗马字母) .
In pinyin, the telecom company China Unicom is called Zhongguo Liantong. If the company used their pinyin name for their website address, it would be quite long. So instead, they use their customer service hotline number 一10010. com. This is easier to type and remember.
In addition, the pronunciations of some numbers sound similar to other words in Chinese. This makes for some clever wordplay. For example, the numbers "5-2-0" in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase (词组)"I love you". Many couples choose to get married on May 20th for this reason.
It is interesting to see how Chinese people have used numbers in so many different ways. "88" for now!
7. Getting a doctor's degree (博士学位) is not easy. It's even harder for a person with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) . But Zhang Dakui did it.
Zhang was (1)       in a poor family in Henan. When he was little, a fever gave him cerebral palsy. At the age of 6, he could no longer (2)      up. His parents tied two bamboo poles (竹竿) between two trees. Day after day, he held the poles to practice walking. Heavy snow, tears or blood — (3)       could stop him. At 9, he started to walk (4)      the help of a walking stick.
It is not enough for Zhang to stand up physically, he was also eager (渴望) to stand up (5)      . He wanted to go to school. "Ordinary people can. Why can't I?" Zhang cheered himself up.
He overcame many difficulties at school, and his dream (6)       him further. He hoped to get a doctor's degree, but most professors (7)      him down after hearing about his condition.
Finally, Professor Fan Xiaozhong, at the Bejing Institute of Technology (北京理工大学), opened a door for Zhang. "I will not treat you (8)      . If you can pass the exams all by yourself, you can study with me for your doctor 's degree," Fan said.
Zhang passed all the exams. "Actually, I'm not as strong as you think. I just work hard on what I should do and what I can do. Only (9)       can change our life," Zhang said. He prefers to use his own experience to inspire more people with similar experiences, helping them build confidence and faith, encouraging them not to give up.
  (10)       he was unable to stand and walk because of cerebral palsy, but now he has already become a giant (巨人) walking spiritually.
8. The news did not come directly to Ella herself. It reached her indirectly that she had won the prize. But as she was a quiet girl, she went on working without (1)       (say) anything. In fact, no one really (2)      (know) what the result was.
Ella was such (3)       excellent artist that no other student in the art class expected to win. But last year nobody had thought Frank Peter would (4)       (lucky) win that prize with his painting of the city bridge. In fact, it was hard to see the bridge unless you looked at the picture for a long time. Still Frank had got the prize.
Ella was a rather shy girl. She was clever and (5)       (get) on very well with everyone. She liked her art teacher, Miss Drake, because she always seemed to be Miss Drake's favorite. What was wonderful about Miss Drake was that she could bring out the best of her students (6)       a clever way. Ella would do what she could (7)      (please) Miss Drake. There is no other thing like winning this prize that could make Miss Drake happy. (8)      Ella was expecting the prize, not just for (9)       (she) but because she had heard Miss Drake say that it was the (10)       (fine) painting she had ever seen.
9. The Chinese are very generous (慷慨的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools. They also want their children to take after-school activities where they will either learn musical instrument or dancing. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. (1)So parents will spend a lot of unreasonable money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
(2)However, most parents fail to see that the best education is usually very cheap. (3)Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking. Cooking requires patience and time. (4)这是一次很有意思但是很难的经历。A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work bard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much confidence. (5)每个人都需要知道如何做饭. What most parents didn't realize is that today's children are not self-confident. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
The most important is not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind.
