1. In a faraway place, there was a village. The village was (1)      in potatoes than anywhere else in the country. At the end of every growing season, (2)      potatoes were dug out of the ground, and readied for the market. In each home, men and women would (3)      divide (分成) the potatoes into three groups:large, medium and small.
One year, there was a young man (4)       received his share of the potatoes. As the other villagers (5)      he walked around the village laughing and talking. (6)      villagers thought he was lazy, and they worried that this man would never get (7)       potatoes ready in time. When it was time for the villagers (8)       to the market, they were greatly surprised to find that the man's potatoes (9)      perfectly into three groups.
After (10)      the man how he did it, they understood he was not lazy, (11)      very clever. He had put all potatoes in a cart (手推车) and pulled it along the village's rough dirt road. As the cart moved up and down over the road, the potatoes moved (12)      . The smaller potatoes moved to the bottom, the larger potatoes rose to the top and the medium potatoes rested (13)       the middle.
Life (14)       like this too. The rough roads we travel along can also (15)       us.
2. One day a man found a cocoon (茧) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched it. Suddenly a small worm (1)      , and it tried its best to (2)      its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to make no progress. So the man decided to (3)      the worm. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that it could come out (4)      .
But to his surprise, the worm got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon. He continued to watch it, because he expected that its wings would be (5)      enough to support the body and fly up in time.
Unluckily, the flight never happened. In fact, the worm kept crawling (爬) around with a heavy body and small wings until it died. It was never able to (6)      .
The man was in his surprise because he did not understand the (7)       of nature. Before the worm came out of the cocoon, fluid (液体) from its body must be forced into its (8)      , which is the necessary preparation for its flying. As for becoming a beautiful (9)      , it must have a hard struggle to get out of the small opening by itself.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we go through our life without difficulties, we would not be as (10)      as we could have been. We could never fly.
3. Two men were staying in the same room in a hospital. One man was so sick that he could not even move his body or look around the room. The other man could move, but was also very ill.
Over time, the two men became good friends. They shared lots of things together and even talked about what they hoped to do after they got better. But there was one thing about the room that was special for both of them. The man who could move would look out of the room's only window, describing the scenery outside for his friend. He told him about the people walking by, the weather — anything that might interest a man who had not seen the world beyond his bed for some time.
One day, when a nurse came to check on the two men, she found that the man who often looked out of the window had died in his sleep. Sadly, she informed the other man that his friend had died and called for nurses to take the dead man away. The other man asked to be moved to the dead man's bed so that he could look out of the window himself. The nurses moved him to the other bed. However, the man found that there was no window at all — just a blank wall.
The nurses explained that the dead man had been blind. He had never actually seen anything outside the window at all – but he described beautiful scenes to encourage his friend. Sometimes all we need in life is a little encouragement –— even if it comes from an unlikely place.
4. Captain America is a Marvel Universe superhero that came out in 1941 by Joe.
Simon and Jack Kirby. And it's one of the most popular superheroes in most American minds, along with Spider Man, Hulk Colossus and so on. Captain America looks young but in fact he is more than 90 years old. His real name is Steve Rogers, a plucky young man from Brooklyn, New York who has the courage to fight.
In the 1940s, Captain America was still a young man. After a secret project, he turned into the hero, Captain America. He used a shield (盾牌)to fight. The captain got hurt in World War II and was frozen after that. When he woke up, 70 years had passed. It was a different world.
As a soldier, Captain America is honest. He believes in protecting the people. He still believes in it when he works for S. H. I. E. L D. That's why he is so surprised when he learns that S H I. E. L D is not what it seems to be. "Action you take may be good for some people, but bad for others, " he says. He finds it hard to tell who's right in the modern world.
However, this is not the biggest problem for him. Soon he will meet an enemy. And it turns out that the enemy was his friend 70 years ago!
How will the captain deal with all these problems? Watch the movie Captain America 2:The Winter Soldier and find out the answers. The captain might be your favorite superhero.
5. Smile Train is a charity that helps millions of children around the world, who suffer from a facial defect (缺陷). The defect happens when a baby's top lip or mouth doesn't form properly before birth. Eating and drinking is very difficult for these babies. The charity provides free operations (手术), which give these children a new smile, and with it, new hope and a new beginning.
Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their families, sadly, others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often abandoned(抛弃) at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less than an hour and costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to perform the operations.
A Smile train doctor from the UK said, "Each child who has the operation is given a second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and be happy. Every year I perform hundreds of operations free of cost through Smile Train. Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising. One newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted(收养) by a passenger. This lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. I did the operation and gave hope to the family. Experienced doctors like me share our skills with local doctors. In this way we make sure we can help more children and families.
