23. Jim is a 13-year-old boy. His life is full of exams and studies on weekdays. He has little free time. He thinks playing computer games is the best way to make him relaxed. When he has free time, he sits in front of the computer. Just like that way, he doesn't eat or drink for several hours.
Last weekend, he played games on the computer again. He was too excited and didn't want to move. He didn't eat anything for six hours. When he had to go to the bathroom, he found he could not move. He was taken to the hospital. The doctor told him he should do some mere different kinds of activities. In other words, he needs more exercise and outdoor activities to have a healthy body.
After coming back from the hospital, Jim follows the doctor's advice. He often plays soccer with his friends. Sometimes he still plays computer games on weekends, but he never does it for long. Now, he lives a healthy life.

24. Does this ever happen to you? When someone introduces you to a friend, you hear his or her name, but two minutes later, you forget it. Or you go to the same restaurant every day and the owner always says "Hello" to you, but you can never remember her name. If this happens, you are the kind of people who have the problem remembering names.
Here are some ways that can help people remember names.
  • Repeat the person's name loud at least three times while you talk together. For example, instead of saying "Nice to meet you." you can say "Nice to meet you, Jack (whatever the person's name is)." Instead of saying "Where do you live?" you can say "Where do you live, Jack?"
  • Introduce the person by name to someone else right away.
  • Write the name down (with a little information about the person) as soon as possible.
There are other ways which may seem a little strange. However, try them.
  • Think of a rhyme for the person's name. For example, think to yourself, "Jack has a nice jacket." Imagine Jack in a nice jacket.
  • Think of a story using the person's name. For example, think to yourself, "Jack would look nice in black." Imagine Jack wearing black clothes.
All these ways have one thing in common. You must pay attention to the people you meet. You can't just meet someone, nod your head, say hello and walk away. Remembering names takes work and practice.

29. Giraffes are the tallest animals of all. They are famous for their long legs and long necks. Father giraffes can grow to nearly five and a half meters tall, and a mother giraffe to nearly five meters tall. They live in parts of Africa. Their necks are long so they can reach high into trees to eat the leaves. Leaves give giraffes most of the water they need so that they do not often have to drink water. A giraffe only drinks once a day. If they need to, giraffes can go for several days without water. Giraffes' long legs help them take big steps (步子). One step can be about 5 meters long. They can run very fast. A giraffe's heart is the biggest of all animals'. Giraffes are friendly animals, but they have to keep themselves from lions.
30. Homework may be many students' least favorite part of school. It seems that Chinese students have to do a lot of homework. Let's talk about some differences between Chinese homework and American homework.
The time we use to do homework seems different. For example, my Chinese friends have about three hours of homework a night. I almost never have more than an hour of homework.
The way we do homework seems to be different as well. In Chinese schools, there is a lot of memorization (背诵). We do this in the US as well, but we do more "out of the box" thinking.
But then again, Chinese students usually do better than US students in math. American students are so bad at math. Even we can't clearly work out the change (找回的零钱) when we buy things in the supermarket.
Anyway, we hope homework will be fun and useful.
(1)       Between Chinese Homework and American Homework
Students in (2)       Students in America
Having about three hours of homework Almost never (3)      more than an hour of homework
Doing (4)      of memorization Doing more "out of the box" thinking
Doing better in math Being (5)      bad at math
