2.One day, when Harry saw a tree, he asked his dad, "What is that tree made of?"
Dad answered in a short low voice, "Wood …branches (树枝) …leaves."
"What's that rock over there made of?"
"Rocks," Dad answered quickly.
Harry wasn't done yet. "How about the air? What is it made of?"
Dad thought for a moment on this one. "It's made of air, or kinds of air."
Harry said, "There are kinds of air?"
Dad sighed (叹息). He was trying to read the newspaper, but he knew his son wasn't going to let him. "There are many kinds of air, but we can't see them."
"Then how do we know they are there?"
"Scientists have studied that. They have found many kinds of air and mixtures (混合物) of those kinds of air."
"Like what?" Harry asked.
Dad said, "There are elements (元素) like oxygen(O), nitrogen(N), helium(He), and others. They mix to make carbon dioxide(CO 2), carbon monoxide(CO), and other things."
Harry regarded his father as if he was speaking another language. "What?"
Dad said, "Look, everything is made up of something else, okay?" Harry nodded (点头), so his father continued. "There are about 100 elements that can make everything, but most things are only made of a few of them."
"Even me?" Harry asked in surprise.
"Yes, you're mostly carbon(C), hydrogen (H), nitrogen, and oxygen, but there are lots of little bits of other elements in you. Each piece is so small that we can't even see it. "
"So what are rocks made of then, for real this time?" Harry watched his father carefully.
"Rocks are made of minerals (矿物质). They are made of elements like silicon(Si) and other things."
Harry nodded, finally satisfied, at least for the moment.
Dad resumed reading his newspaper, and only a few minutes later another question came. "And the trees then?"
Dad gave up and went inside the house to read his newspaper.

3. Everybody wants to succeed, but how can we be successful? We must keep working hard to achieve our goals and it always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps?
Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith (信念). We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra (额外的) baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself "I don't want to make a fool of myself" or "I'd better be good at this", you'll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.
As a culture, we focus on results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove (证明) them to the whole world.
So, take those baby steps to reach the goals. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint That's how our baby steps lead us through the marathon (马拉松) of life.
