13. When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.
After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day a tragedy (悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired (钦佩) for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.
14. The event took place one snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. "As I was walking, I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out," said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. "Someone else told me the lake was only one-meter deep. but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck, and pulled him out. I don't think I have ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay."
A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. "The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it , the owner Smith was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can't begin to imaging how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber — he just crawled (爬行) back out. put the dog on its lead, and went home."
Many people regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quite laid-back about it. "Most dog owners are the same as me. They would do what I did without a second thought."
Pets are members of our family. Would you do the same for them?
15. In many high schools, there are strict rules about using mobile phones. If your phone rings in class, for example, the teacher will be very angry.
Every mobile phone has a ringtone (铃声). It tells you that someone is calling you. Now, there is a ringtone called "mosquitotone (蚊子铃声)". Using it, students can receive calls and text messages (短信) in class but the teacher will not realize what is happening. How?
Mosquitotone has a special sound. Only children and teenagers can hear it. As we get older, we are unable to hear some sounds with high frequencies (频率). As a result, a child or teenager can hear the mosquitotone ringtone, but someone of 20 or older can't.
But sometimes, people over 20 can hear the ringtone. One British student's phone uses mosquitotone. In class, the student's phone rang. The 22-year-old teacher looked at the student and became unhappy. "I heard that. You know the rule:no mobile phone in class."
Not all the students are interested in mosquitotone. Jerry Jones, a high school student of 17, says, "Using mosquitotone too often is bad for our hearing. I may use it for pleasure, but not in class. It's unfair (不公平的) to the teachers!"
What do parents think of mosquitotone?"I think it is perfect for places like movie theaters," says Connie Neeson, 44. "Think about it. You're watching a film and someone's mobile phone rings. Mosquitotone is good because many people don't hear it. However, it also has a bad influence(影响) on their study if students use it in class."
16. The Big Lottery is giving money to groups of teenager between 14 and 19. The teenagers who would like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and more friendly can actually get money for improving your local community. We have ﹩80, 000 to give away. We are looking for young people to take part in schemes (规划) and projects near to where they live. Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbors. Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people's door and find out what they would like improving in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don't want to go round to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch. Neighborhood watch schemes are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it's very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. It's a good way to make the area you live in safer. You could set one up easily and quickly.
Lending a hand. There are often elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their garden for them or maybe walk their dogs.
No littering (扔垃圾). Nobody likes picking up other people's rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take it in turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something good.
Recycling (回收), Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas already provide places to people to recycle bottles, tins, plastic and paper. Find out if this is done in your neighborhood. If it's not, do something about it.
