15. Beijing has a large number of old trees. A survey showed that the city had about 40, 000 century-old trees. Among them, more than 6,100 were over 300 years old. It's said that the longest living tree is about 3, 000 years old, almost as old as the city itself. Nearly half of the old trees are in old streets and ancient gardens.
However, about 9, 000 of the old trees are in danger because of environmental changes, natural disasters (灾害), and so on.
Last year, Beijing government started a project to protect trees that are over 100 years old. They first found two ginkgoes (银杏树) and two pagoda trees (国槐) at the foot of Beijing's Western Hills.
Yang Shutian, director of the project, said that old trees could be seen as "living relics (遗迹)" and keeping them healthy was also part of the work to protect and carry forward the city's history.
A group of tree experts carried out an examination of the four old trees, which were very weak and dying. The experts soon took action to save the trees. They filled holes, controlled pests and watered the trees over the next two months. The trees are now very strong. According to Yang, more old trees in the city will be protected through the project.
"The old trees have witnessed (见证) the city's development and played a key role in improving the city's environment. To make them healthy is our duty," Yang added.

17. Is modern life moving too fast?Do you feel as if you are running hard, but staying in the same place?Well, you are not alone. According to a recent study, 78% of the young people say the "sped-up" pace (节奏) of modern life is making them feel really tired.
Rapid changes in technology and society are the main causes of the problem. And the continuous bombardment (轰炸) of information can be another cause. With everyone connected by smart phones, young people can easily learn about the newest, the latest and the coolest things happening around them. No one wants to miss a hot topic. And with all the videos, games and messages they get from smart phones, they feel uncomfortable when it's quiet-so boring!
Is there a way to help stop the "sped-up" life? Yes, there is. Turn off your smart phone! Staying away from your phone for a few hours each day will put you back in control of your life. Even Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were worried about the influences of the technologies they had created. They didn't allow their own kids to use the smart phones and the Internet for too long.
As human beings, we are not supposed to be stimulated (刺激) all the time. It can even be harmful to both our physical and mental health. So, slow down to visit a park, read a book and take up a hobby. It's a little bit hard at first and you have to make a great effort, but it's you who can take control of your time and life, isn't it?

After months of work, his treatment plan for SARS was adopted (采纳) by China and then the whole world, saving thousands of lives, People's Daily reported.
Zhong is also known for being an honest scholar. In 2003, when authorities (官方) said that the SARS virus was under control, he publicly refuted their claim. "I couldn't help myself. I said it's not all under control, "Zhong said in a later interview. His honesty won widespread praise from the Chinese public.
Back to the frontlines
Seventeen years later, Zhong is once again leading an expert team to study the novel coronavirus. Although this new virus is known to be more dangerous to the elderly, Zhong doesn't seem worried about his own safety. On Jan 18, he took a high-speed train from Guangzhou to Wuhan. Two days later, he became the first expert to make certain that the new virus can be spread between humans. On January 29, he and his colleagues spent over four hours online checking five patients who were in serious condition. The next day, he chose the treatment for those patients. Under his guidance, his team developed a rapid test kit (快速检测试剂盒) for the disease that can show results within 15 minutes.
As People's Daily wrote, "the 84-year-old Zhong Nanshan shows his professionalism as a scholar, courage as a soldier, and a sense of duty as the backbone (脊梁) of our nation."
