"I will call Dr. Gray and you're going to see her tomorrow after school."
Tammy went to her room and began to worry. That night Tammy did not sleep.
The next day after school, Tammy went to Dr. Gray's office with her mom. When Tammy went in to see the doctor, she was so nervous (紧张的). The doctor told her and her mom that Tammy was having trouble seeing things from far away. She told Tammy that she would need to choose a pair of glasses to help her see well. Tammy looked worried.
"What's the matter?" asked Dr. Gray.
"I don't want to wear glasses! All the girls are going to laugh at (嘲笑) me."
"Why aren't you laughing at me? I'm wearing glasses."

13. Last month we made a survey among 300 students at our school. The questions we asked were "Who would you talk with when in trouble? Why?" Here are some answers from them.
Wang Lin: I would talk with my parents or teachers when in trouble. They are older than me and have more experience of life. They always listen to me carefully and give me helpful ideas. I trust them.
Chen Lei: Life is full of small troubles, but I'm never afraid of them. I would talk with my friends when in trouble, because we understand each other and they always give me good suggestions. I won't feel worried.
Li Yan: I am a quiet girl. I like to keep my secrets. I think nobody can really understand me except myself. So I never tell others when I'm in trouble.
14. Ants are social insects, which means they live in large colonies or groups. In the colonies, thousands of ants work together to build rooms, find food and protect their young. Ants live in underground tunnels (地道, 隧道). In these tunnels, there are special rooms for food and for baby ants. Some ants have to pick up all the rubbish from the colony and bring it outside the colony. Do you think all that rubbish might be too much for a little ant? Think again. Even though they are so small, ants can lift up to 20 times their own weight. That's about as much as a 10-year-old boy lifts a small car.
Ants can't talk, but this doesn't stop them. Ants communicate by leaving chemicals from their bodies for other ants to smell. For example, if an ant finds a piece of food, it will send out chemicals that say "there is food here". The other ants will follow their noses toward the food until it is all gone. On the other hand, if there is something dangerous around, ants will send chemicals that say "stay away".
The ant colony is made up of three classes, the queen, the workers and the male ants. Life in a colony is very organized. Each member has a job to do. The queen has one role, to lay eggs. She does not rule over the other ants, but has the most important job. The whole colony would even die if there was no queen. Queen ants can live up to fifteen years!
The worker ants may have one or several jobs. Some of these jobs are to gather food for the colony, protect the nest from predators (掠夺者) and look after the queen and young ants.
These insects are amazing and we should protect them.
15. One day, a lovely girl found two weak birds while she was walking in the woods. She took them home and put them in a small cage. (1)       Every morning they greeted her with a beautiful song. The girl loved them very much and wanted their singing to last forever.
  (2)       The larger and stronger of the two birds flew out of the cage. The girl watched worriedly as it circled high above her. She was afraid that it would fly away and she would never see it again. So when it flew close, she grasped at it wildly. She was very happy that she held it tightly in her hand! (3)       She opened her hand and was surprised to find the bird was dead.
She noticed the other bird jumping up and down in the cage. She could feel that it wanted to be free. It hoped to fly in the clear, blue sky. She lifted it from the cage and let it fly in the air.
  (4)       She watched the bird circling once, twice, three times... (5)       It sang the sweetest song she had ever heard.
The fastest way to lose love is to hold it tight. The best way to keep love is to let it fly.

A. When the bird was flying happily in the sky, she was so glad.
B. One day the girl left the cage's door open.
C. She fed them with love and the birds grew strong.
D. To her surprise, the bird flew back closer and sat softly on her shoulder.
