The theft of manhole covers has been a big problem in China. According to CCTV News, there were over 70 injuries or deaths due to broken or (5)       manhole covers from 2017 to 2019. 3. "Humans can develop certain abilities we aren't born with by practicing animals' movements," the traditional Chinese Kungfu lovers believed in the past and still do today.
Chinese Five-Animal Exercises, also known as Wuqinxi, are the first complete set of qigong exercises following the movements of animals: monkeys, deer, birds, bears and tigers. They were created by one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1,800 years ago.
The Five-Animal Exercises are well-designed to help blood circulation, and let the energy go smoothly in the body so as to improve health.
"The bear movements are good for the stomach. The tiger movements can reduce the pain in the back. The deer movements help reduce the fat around the waist. The bird movements can help keep our knees healthy and the monkey movements can be good for the heart," said Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor of Wuqinxi.
For those new learners, the first few exercises might not go well. You may find it hard to focus. Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful in your mind, try to move slowly... Little by little, you'll feel more and more harmonious with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or a deer, walking in the forest freely.
These exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You can search online for the videos and practice them at any time when you feel like relaxing your body and mind. It's fun to practice and good for health, so Five Animal Exercises are becoming more and more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many other places of the world.
4. Trees in cities "live fast but die young" compared to forests in the countryside, warns a new study. It's time for us to understand city trees from a new way.
Researchers found that trees in cities die younger than ones in the countryside because of the higher levels of CO2. City-living trees suffer a loss of carbon storage. That means trees produce less energy to the air.
Now researchers say more must be done to deal with the situation. Ian Smith, a PhD student of Boston University in the United States, said, "Cities are in the important position in fighting against rising temperatures and increasing CO2." "We find that tree planting alone may not be enough to keep and increase city canopy cover (树冠覆盖率). Because of the age and size of the present canopy, efforts to improve and protect tree health are badly needed for increasing city tree cover and canopy cover."
The research team used a model to watch changes among street trees for several planting and management methods. Researchers also used the model to watch tree growth, death and planting rates both among trees in Boston city and forests in the countryside in Massachusetts.
It was discovered that rates of carbon cycling and growth rates among city trees were nearly four times faster than those in the countryside. However, loss of carbon storage and death rates are also higher, especially death rates which are more than double higher than those in countryside forests.
The study, published in PLOS ONE, has reminded scientists to encourage communities to do more than simply planting and protecting trees. It is important to increase city canopy cover and carbon storage.
Researchers say planting and protecting will be needed to make sure cities can develop healthily, but more needs to be done to have a better understanding of city trees which may be different from countryside forests.
5. When people discover that I work as a film and TV extra (临时演员), they always ask me the same questions: Emily, is it easy to get work? Isn't it boring? Do you get to meet famous actors? Does it pay well? My answers are pretty standard as well: Yes, sometimes, once in a while, and... kind of. There's no need to explain more because those people are just being curious. In fact, the life of an extra is both more interesting and more boring than you might imagine.
Extras, who play the people in crowds, on streets, or in the background of indoor scenes, can come from all walks of life. Unlike many extras, I'm a trained actor. I do get real speaking roles, but work can be hard to come by if you're not a popular star. I'm registered (注册) with an agency that deals only with extras, so I get calls all the time. The agency explains who I'll be — someone in a crowd, a member of a jury, a clerk — and tells me where to go. Call time is usually bright and early, so I try to get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Sometimes being an extra is a "hurry up and wait" job. In my first extra role, I was one of a group of office workers who come out of a building just as a car exploded in the street. We waited for hours for the scene to be shot, and then went in and out of the building about fifty times, trying to act terrified by an explosion which was not real. Then we had lunch, changed clothes, and spent the afternoons as customers in a department store.
It may sound like I don't enjoy the work, but I do. Being part of the background in a convincing (令人信服的) way is challenging, and being on a film or TV set is always fascinating. A lot of famous actors don't even notice the extras, but the ones who do make the job a lot of fun for everyone. As for the money, it's nothing compared to what the big actors make, but it pretty much pays the bills. And, as a bonus, I've beaten my high scores on all my phone games, thanks to all the time I spend sitting around, waiting for something to happen.

7. "The only constant (不变) in life is change," Heraclitus said in about 500 B.C. That could be truer today. (1)       Technology is out of date almost by the time you buy it. We get plenty of information every day. Francis Bacon said, "Knowledge is power." In fact, there is more information in a newspaper than he would have experienced in his whole life.
Why are we afraid of change? (2)       After all, who knows what new dangers might appear? However, change is also the only way of development. Nobody can stop it in life. Luckily, our brains become stronger when meeting the unknown. (3)       To be more imaginative and creative, you should look for and find environments you have no experience with.
  (4)       For example, try a new restaurant, or go to a play or a concert you normally wouldn't attend. Small change can help you gradually get used to uncertainty. So when bigger things happen, you'll be more fully prepared for them.
People who fear change often stick to a certain lifestyle. They believe they can control the future by doing so. (5)       If you can move from just accepting it to actively finding it out and dealing with it, you will be successful.
A. That's because our brains want to protect us.
B. But change comes whether you ask for it or not.
C. We live in a world that is changing every minute.
D. You can learn how to face the changes in daily life.
E. Dealing with the unexpected needs imagination and creativity.
8. Many of us enjoy watching animals in the world. But do you know they can teach us?
Geese (雁), for example, teach us a very good (1)l             about teamwork. In the fall, Canada geese fly to the warm south to get away from the cold winter. They lift off in no order. Yet quickly they form a V (2)s            , with one bird leading the group. This allows geese to save energy. When the front bird moves its wings up and down, the resulting force of the air lifts the next one. This continues down the line. The bird in front has the hardest job. When it gets (3)t             , it moves behind, and another bird moves into the lead. By sharing the role, the group can travel long (4)d            .
During the long flying journey, geese communicate with one another. They honk(鸣叫)to (5)e             the birds up front to keep up the speed. They also cheer each other up while working towards a common goal.
