People had to go there to make calls to faraway people and the fees were very high. Later, a cell phone was developed in 1973 in America. It was one of the most useful inventions. People can use cell phones to communicate with others much more easily. They can take them anywhere to make private calls, even vision calls (可视电话). Cell phones have many other functions, such as sending messages, taking photos and reading online.
TV The first TV set was invented by an English scientist, John Baird, in 1926. The invention helps people watch films at home instead of going to the cinema as before. At first, TV sets only broadcast black-white pictures. Several years later, colored TV sets made the pictures lively. However, they were heavy and thick, so it was difficult to move them. Then, digital TV sets came into being. They are light and thin. Many TV programs are available (可获得的) at any time. At present, people can use the IPTV(网络电视) to record and replay programs.
Computer The first modern computer was invented in America in 1946. It was as big as a room. It improved the speed and exactitude (准确性) of calculation (计算). In the 1950s, desktop computers were invented in the same country. They became smaller and could be put on the desk. Since then, they have become very important in many fields of work and leisure. Before the 1970s, the computers were single. It was the Internet that joined the computers into a big family, so they could share information with one another. Around 1985, laptops were developed in Japan. They were much smaller and could be put on people?s laps. They were light and easy to take.
20. It's a cold, grey Sunday afternoon in March. The British are all working in their gardens. They're digging, cutting leaves and planting new seeds (种子). By summer, their gardens will be full of bright colours.
The British love their gardens. A British newspaper recently asked people for their opinions about them. Around 70% of the people felt it was important to spend time in the garden, and over 50% of these described gardening as the most enjoyable thing they ever did.
Only one in ten houses in Britain do not have a garden. People who live in houses without gardens often rent (租用) land from the government.
At first, only very rich people had gardens. You can still see the gardens around houses with a long history, such as Chatsworth House or Castle Howard. In the early twentieth century, however, gardening became a hobby. People bought different kinds of seeds and plants for their gardens. Although roses, sunflowers and tomatoes are often grown in British gardens, they originally (起初) grew wild in other countries.
Every year, there are competitions for the largest vegetables, but don't expect to win; Britain's biggest carrot is almost six metres long.

22. As we all know, English is an important subject in middle school. Everyone knows that they must learn English well, but some people don't know how to learn it well. Here are some suggestions which may help you with your English.
The biggest problem is people's own fear. They worry that they won't say things correctly or that they will look foolish so that they don't speak English at all. Don't be afraid of being laughed at. Only if we aren't afraid of making mistakes can we learn English well.
The fastest way to learn something is to do it again and again until you get it right. Learning English needs practice. Don't let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
The best way to learn English is to have a good environment. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English radios, watch English news, movies and TV programs. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English materials that you have around you, the faster you will learn it.
Many people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, by doing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are making progress.
23. There is a saying that "honesty is the best policy (策略)". Tell the truth and good things will happen. This is just the way it is.
Long ago, a homeless man was walking in a busy market. On the ground in front of him, he saw a leather(皮制的) purse. Upon opening it, he found 100 gold coins inside. The beggar was hungry. He had no home. He even wanted to keep the purse. Suddenly, he heard the cry of a rich man. "I have lost my money bag!" he shouted. "I offer a big reward (酬谢) to anyone who finds it and returns it to me." The homeless man gave the rich man back his money.
However, the rich man had other plans. He opened the bag and said, "There are only 100 gold coins inside. The purse I lost had 200 gold coins. You must have stolen the rest. You will have no reward from me." The beggar went to the court to settle the matter.
A wise judge said, "Rich man, you say you lost a purse containing 200 gold coins. However, the beggar found a purse containing only 100 gold coins. I know that his purse can't be the one you lost."
So the judge gave the purse to the person who had found it, as no rightful owner had come forward to prove it was his. And that is why, in the end, honesty truly is the best policy.
