When the (1)       came to Fred, he kicked it into some long grass. "I'll get it." he said and hurried off to find the ball. Moments later there was a shout and out came Fred holding his leg, "I've been bitten (咬) by a snake!"
As the others (2)       over to help, Fred began laughing, "Ha! I'm not really hurt." But Betty didn't laugh, "I can't believe you did that, Fred. I was really frightened for you."
The friends then decided to go for a swim. John and Betty jumped into the water. Fred was (3)       on a long rock by the river bank and said, "Watch me jump." They shouted excitedly as he went under the water, but as the seconds passed he didn't come back to the top. The friends became worried. Suddenly they heard Fred's laugh, "Won't you ever (4)      ? I swam behind this tree when I jumped."
"Very funny, Fred?" said John (5)       "Anyway, I'm feeling tired and I'm going for a sleep." Betty joined him.
Fred, however, moved to a narrow part of the (6)       and jumped in. Although he was a good swimmer, the water there was moving much faster and Fred found himself dragged (拖拽) away. Back at the picnic place, as Betty and John were preparing to sleep, they heard Fred's cries for help, John looked at Betty and said, "Does he really think we're so (8)      ? Wake me up in an hour. It'll be time to go back home then."

15.Warmness
Henriks is 6 years old. Like many other kids, Henriks has been learning at home this year, His school has been closed because of COVID-19.
When you are learning at home, one day can seem just like all the others. But for Henriks, Tuesdays are special. That's when recycling crews (工作人员) drive garbage trucks to his neighborhood to collect the garbage and do recycling. This work requires big trucks, And Henriks loves trucks!
For two weeks, Henriks watched the crews at work in his neighborhood. Then he started to run outside and help. First, he started pulling his family's carts out. Next, he pulled out all the carts on his street. Then he would run to other areas and help there, too.
Henriks made friends with the recycling team. The men would talk with Henriks, and he would tell them ahout his day. Kevin Johnson is in charge of recycling. His team told him about Henriks. They looked forward to seeing Henriks each week.
Last year was a hard year for his workers, Johnson said. It was nice to know somebody was thinking about them. Johnson and the team wanted to thank Henriks for his help.
So on one Tuesday, they surprised him. They pulled up outside of his house in six big trucks! The collectors gave him a safety vest and hard hat, just like they wear. Then they gave him an award. It has a picture of a recycling truck on it.
Henriks said it made him feel like he was part of the team. It also made him feel like their friends. Henriks wrote a thank-you note to them. He included a photo of the group giving him his award. The photo of Henriks and the recycling crew was on the front of it. On the back, it said, "We're not just a team because we work together. We're a team because we respect, trust, and care for each other. Teamwork makes the dream work."
16. Jumping rope is easy to use and just about the best cardio (有氧运动) you can do on the road. It is much more than a middle school gym class, it's a free workout that requires very little skill to get started.
Jumping rope may make you think of middle school break and gym class, but the lightweight piece of equipment can actually give you a pretty well-done workout. In fact, according to Jillian Michaels, health and fitness expert, jumping rope is "one of the most effective forms of cardio. Because it's extremely efficient and burns far more calories (卡路里) than traditional cardio." According to a survey, jumping rope for 10 minutes can burn as many calories as jogging at an eight-minute-per-mile pace.
The benefit of jumping rope is not limited to burn calories. "It benefits every part of the body, including the mind. Jumping rope causes the body to make chemicals that can help a person feel good. It can help people lower blood pressure, lose weight, regulate blood sugar, sleep better, lower the risk of some diseases, and so on. Besides, jumping rope also helps to improve coordination (协调性), bone density (密度), and lower body strength!" Michaels adds.
Perfecting the size of your rope is a science, too. To find the right size for you, step on your rope in the center and pull the rope straight upward at the handles. The handles should reach to your chest line. Upon rotation (旋转), there should be a suitable amount of space between the top of your head and the top of your rope.
And just like with any other exercise, form comes first. The perfect jump includes keeping your upper arms close to your sides, and your elbows (肘部) in with your lower arms out at about 90-degree holding the rope with your hands around hip height. Keep your jumps small, and make sure to land on the front feet for a quick turn-around.
Ready to skip your way to slim? It is time for you to add jumping rope to your cardio routine.
17. A bat and a ball cost 1. 10 in total. The bat costs 1. 00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
If you answered 10 cents, you are not alone — most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents). It's an example of how we often depend on intuitive responses (直觉反应) — answers we feel are true. People give answers that "pop into their mind," says cognitive scientist Steven Sloman. We don't spend much time "reflecting and checking whether the answer…is right or wrong."
The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake (虚假的) news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But "the trick with fake news is to know to verify" — in other words, to stop and check what you know.
In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but they did not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate (评等级) their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they didn't understand it.
The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said the scientists could fully explain how it works. The volunteers gave an average answer of 2. The scientists' confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding of it, Sloman says.
According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion (接触传染). This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics (政治). "If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest," Sloman Bays, "then you are going to start thinking that you understand, too."
So, in a world where misleading information is common, is there a way to protect ourselves? "I don't think it's possible to train persons to check everything that they encounter (遇到)," Sloman admitted. "It is just too human to believe what you are told."
However, training people to care about fact-checking is important, he argued, especially in online communities. Think of the headlines and stories that are shared on your social media feed every day. Probably these fit in with your own worldview﹣but perhaps not all of them are true.
"We should check things and not just take them at face value," Sloman said, "Make sure if it is true before you believe."
18.World Water Day
World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year. It draws attention to the important role of water in our lives, the difficulties people face in getting water and solutions to these problems. It is reported by scientists that between 55 and 60 percent of the adult body is made of it. In normal conditions, the human body can only stay alive three or four days without water. We need water to stay alive, yet there are billions of people all over the world who do not have access (使用) to safe drinking water.
The problems facing communities without water
Except for the obvious health problems, a shortage of clean water means that some people in some areas — often women and children — have to spend hours every day walking to and from distant water supplies (供应). This means they don't have time to focus their attention on their work, studies and other duties. So the search for water becomes their main jobs. For many people, the access to water has become increasingly difficult because of the increasing need for a limited resource.
  What are the solutions?
In fact, many governments and organizations have already taken actions to offer good solutions. Waste-water recycling, storing rainwater, more efficient irrigation techniques (灌溉技术) and reforestation are good examples of how water can be used more efficiently. There are also many other charities working on creating sustainable (可持续性) supplies of clean water for different communities around the world, but this important work needs to continue.
What we can do to help
The theme (主题) of World Water Day 2021 is valuing water. The value of water is about much more than its price. Without an understanding of water's true value, we will be unable to safeguard it.What we can do to help is to support charities, take part in the World Water Day events, be careful with how we use water in our own lives. We can also visit the UN World Water Day website to find out about an event near us and help spread around the world about the importance of saving water.
