3. Mobile phones and the Internet have improved our life in many ways. However, along with improvements, they have also brought a number of worrying problems.
Many car accidents are caused by mobile phones. You can use many new mobile phones to get on the Internet. This can be very convenient, but some drivers get on the Internet while driving. Driving needs all our attention. By looking at their mobile phones and not at the road, these insensitive (感觉迟钝的) drivers are a danger to us all.
Many of the dangers of the Internet are well known. Children who visit websites without their parents' permission (许可) sometimes talk to older people they don't know and put themselves in great danger. People with blogs sometimes post embarrassing(使人尴尬的)photographs of people they don't know on their websites without permission. There are also people who use the Internet to get personal information that we do not want them to have.
Mobile Phone and Internet Safety Tips:
◆If you need to use a mobile phone while you drive, use a "hands﹣free" phone.
◆In difficult driving situations such as rain or snow, do not use your phone at all.
◆Do not make very important phone calls while driving. They take your attention off the road.
◆Tell your children not to talk with anyone they do not know on the Internet.
◆In an embarrassing situation, pay attention to people around you. People will be shy about taking your picture if they know you're paying attention.
◆Refuse to give out any personal information on the Internet.
4. Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as "yes" and "no".
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren't paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, "Do you have cold drinks?"The woman there didn't say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her:She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means "yes".
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, "Do you have cabbage today?" He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means no.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean "yes" or "no".
5. What was life like in China 3, 500 years ago?Was it very different to life now? What did people do? How did they live?Let's find out.
  The Kings
From 1700 until 1100 BC, the area of China around the Yellow River was ruled by a family of kings called the Shang. They were rich and very powerful. The king and his family lived in large beautiful palaces. They had many servants who made them food and did all the work in the palaces, so they had an easy life.
  The People
The richest people lived in cities with very high walls. They didn't work, and spent their time hunting and horse riding. They were good at capturing animals.
Other people lived outside the walls. There were merchants (商人) and craftsmen (工匠), so they worked for their living. They were not poor, but they were not protected during wars.
Most of the people during this time were farmers. They lived in villages in the countryside. They worked in fields with tools made of stone, grew grain such as rice, wheat, and kept animals. The best place for farming was by the Yellow River. Here the warm, wet weather was perfect for growing rice. The farmers lived in small houses made of mud or bamboo. They had to listen to the kings and the rich people all the time and give them food and gifts. They didn't have a very easy life.
  _______________
During the time of the Shang, the Chinese discovered how to make bronze (青铜). Bronze is an important metal because it is strong and lasts for a very long time. The Chinese made all kinds of things from bronze, such as pots for cooking, cups for drinking, jewellery and weapons (武器).
But perhaps the most important development during the time of the Shang was writing. With it, people could pass on information about themselves, their lives and what they believed. Although the Chinese started writing at this time, they didn't have paper yet, so people wrote on animal bones, on bamboo, and even on turtle shells!
So, life for people in ancient China was quite different from our lives today.
