11. Mr Magicman is a magician. He is famous in his town and he goes to all the children's parties. He does lots of magic tricks. He makes all kinds of animals from balloons. He plays card tricks and, like Harry Potter, he can make things disappear. He tells wonderful stories. Sometimes, he sings and dances for the children. All the children love Mr. Magicman. When children see him in town, they wave (招手) and they shout "Hello" at him. He waves back and sometimes, if he has his hat on, he raises it to greet them.
Today is Saturday, June 26th, 2020. It is sunny. It is Peter's birthday. Peter is ten. At 2 o'clock, all the children, including me, of course, were at Peter's house. We played party games and ate some delicious cakes. We waited for Mr. Magicman. Then Peter's dad came in, saying, "I am terribly sorry. Mr. Magicman has got a very bad headache and he cannot come."
Hearing this, all the children were upset. Then, we discussed together and made a plan. We made a banner (横幅) and went to Mr. Magician's house with it. Peter also took a cake with him. After we knocked on his door, Mr. Magicman slowly opened his door. Seeing us standing outside the door, he smiled. Then we held up our banner. The banner read, "Get well soon, Mr. Magicman. We all love you." Then we gave him a cake. Mr. Magicman opened his mouth and he made the cake disappear soon! He is really an excellent magician!
12. Pippi Longstocking, the 9-year-old, red haired hero of children's books, turned 75 on May 21, 2020.
Pippi Longstocking first came to life in 1941, when Astrid Lindgren's daughter Karin was sick in bed for a long time. Karin suddenly said to her, "Tell me about Pippi Longstocking, Mum."
Ms. Lindgren's stories were about a wild but good-hearted young girl. She lived by herself in a house called Villa Villekulla. She lived with her horse and her monkey. But three years later. Ms. Lindgren began to write down the stories she had told her daughter. When she finished her book, she sent it to a famous publisher (出版社), but the book was refused.
Ms. Lindgren kept working on the book. In 1945, Ms. Lindgren entered her book in a competition. Pippi Longstocking won first prize, and the book came out in November. Pippi Longstocking was quickly a hit with young readers. They laughed at her jokes, and admired her bravery. Who wouldn't love a girl strong enough to lift a horse, and willing to risk her life to save children in a burning building? Some adults felt like Pippi set a bad example to children. Pippi didn't go to school. She lived by herself, and only followed the rules she liked. But with time, Pippi's good heart won over readers of all ages.
Ms. Lindgren wrote many other books, including over 30 books for children. The three P ippi Longstocking books have been translated into over 75 languages.
So why is Pippi's birthday celebrated on May 21? May 21 is the birthday of Ms Lindgren's daughter Karin, who first requested the stories all those years ago.
13. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about winter sports? Skiing (滑雪) , of course. There is no doubt that down-hill skiing is the world's most popular winter sport although it's one of the most expensive as well. Few people, however, know that cross-country skiing is much easier and less expensive than down-hill skiing, and certainly also enjoyable.
Cross-country skiing has been around for much longer than down-hill skiing and it is probably the oldest winter sport. A long time before the snowmobile was invented, it was also the first means of transportation that people used to move across the snow. In fact, the oldest ski ever found, which was in Sweden, is more than 4, 500 years old.
Cross-country skiing is not difficult at all. Even people who aren't professional can have fun from the beginning without having to spend a long time or lots of money taking lessons. That's why it's very common to see people of all ages enjoying cross-country skiing together. In fact, at the first Winter Olympics held in Chamonix in 1924, it was the only kind of skiing in the c ompetition. Now for cross-country skiers, the most exciting event every year is the Engadine Marathon, where more than 10, 000 men, women and children ski across the frozen (冰冻的) lake of St. Moritz in Switzerland. This makes more people from all over the world take part in the sport.
For cross-country skiers, what they value is the excitement of the sport. Popular holiday centers and luxurious hotels are not important. They stay in cheap houses and go skiing whenever they feel like it.
14. The Galapagos Islands are a special group of islands 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Because the islands are so far from land, they are home to many plants and animals that you can't find anywhere else, such as giant tortoises (巨龟). The Islands are also far from each other. This has allowed different kinds of animals to develop on different islands. There are at least 12 different kinds of Galapagos tortoises.
Giant tortoises can live for more than 100 years though their living environment is sometimes bad. Over long periods of time, they've slowly changed their shells (外壳) and body styles to better fit the environment.
Hood Island is one of the Galapagos Islands. Like many other Galapagos tortoises, the number of Hood Island tortoises dropped dangerously low. Long ago, the Galapagos Islands were a favorite stopping place for the ship-men, who used giant tortoises as food on their trips. In 1976, the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) began a program to raise their number. Several Hood Island tortoises were brought to a special area on Santa Cruz Island, and young tortoises could be raised and cared for here. At the time, Diego had been living in a zoo in California for about 30 years. When scientists realized he was a Hood Island tortoise, he was returned to take part in the program. The program was a great success. In 2020, there are nearly 2, 000 Hood Island tortoises alive. Diego is believed to be responsible for about 40% of them. Now scientists believe that the Hood Island tortoises won't disappear.
There is no longer a need for a special program for Hood Island tortoises, and Diego and 14 other tortoises have now been returned to Hood Island.

First-grade teacher Katie Ricca of Florida has been giving her math lessons every day on Zoom. At the same time, she has to take care of the studies of her five little ones. So when she spared no effort to help one of her students out, the child's mom couldn't stop singing her praises.
During one of her many Zoom calls, Katie noticed a girl named Hannah had shut down in the middle of the lesson. "Our class tried talking to her, but there's something wrong with her." Katie said later. When Hannah left the lesson early, she became worried.
Once class was over, Katie texted Kelley Close, her mom, to check in and found out Hannah "was sad but didn't know why." On hearing this, Katie asked if she could pay a short visit the next day. Kelley said yes.
"Today her teacher came over and hung out for some time." Kelley wrote on Facebook. "They chatted, read books, and just talked. Though this woman has five kids at home, she kept social distancing (距离) with my daughter and sat in my driveway for an hour to make sure Hannah was okay."
For Katie, spending time with Hannah wasn't a waste of time. "Seeing my student upset, I knew I had to show her I care for her," the teacher explained.
