11. We could all say that we have bad days as we go through life, but what does it take to have a really good day?
I remember a day recently when I had to go to the (1)       for special tests because I wasn't feeling well and my doctor sent me to a specialist to try and find the cause of my illness.
As I (2)       to the hospital, I was feeling sad and certainly wasn't on top of my game. As I got to the hospital, I began my (3)       for a parking lot. I finally found one not too far from the entrance to the hospital.
As I got out and brought my change out of my pocket, I noticed a man looking a little (4)       standing in front of a parking meter (停车记时收费表) two cars away. He seemed to be searching his pockets for what I supposed were (5)       for the meter.
Although I (6)       didn't feel that great, I thought that I should at least go over to him and find out if I could (7)       him. As I stood beside him, he turned to me looking worried. I asked him if he had a problem I could help with. He said that he had no coins at all because he was only thinking about visiting his sick wife when he left his house.
I reached into my pocket and (8)       out two dollars and gave it to him without saying a word. And, without waiting for a reply, I turned on my heel and said to him as I was walking away: "Have a good day."
The funny thing was that I felt a lot brighter, a small smile came to my face, and I seemed to walk just a little quicker. I was walking away when he called out: "Thank you so much." You know, I didn't even (9)       him to say anything. He didn't have to say a word to me. It was simply enough to know that I had helped someone else who needed a little (10)      . That's all it took to bring a smile to my face as I went on toward completing my own business.
You know, it doesn't take much to help someone else.
12. Everyone is good at something, but some people are truly talented. It's always interesting to watch other people show their (1)            . Talent shows are getting more and more popular. All these shows have one thing in (3)            : they try to look for the best singers, the most talented dancers, the most exciting magicians, the (4)             actors and so on. All kinds of people join these shows. But who can play the piano the (5)             or sing the most beautifully? That's up to you to decide. When people watch the show, they usually play a role in (6)             the winner. And the winner always gets a very good prize.
However, not everybody enjoys watching these shows. Some think that the lives of the (7)             are made up. For example, some people say they are poor farmers, but in fact they are just actors. However, if you don't take these shows too (8)            , they are fun to watch. 14.To son, Cecil,
Just a quick note preface before I start in earnest. When I wrote this, you were 8, still a little boy. In 2002, I was called to active duty in the Marine Corps in the War on Terrorism. On the 11th of September 2001 when America was attacked, I knew that I would eventually have to go and I was filled with a deep sense of sadness. That night as you and Keiko were asleep, I looked at your little faces and couldn't help but fight the tears. I knew it would be hard for you because I had a similar experience.
When I was a little boy aged 6, my Dad, your Grandpa Cawley, was sent to Vietnam during the War there. I remember how much I missed him, too. But now unfortunately I have come to realize just how rough it must have been for Grandpa to be away from his children for a year. Thinking about this, I wanted to put my thoughts and feelings down for you and your sister. I am so sorry that I had to leave for such a long time. There is no place I would rather be than with you and Keiko. You two are the lights of my life. I have known no greater joy than in the few years since you two were born. I hope to have many more years with you. If this doesn't happen, then know that I love you more than words can express. If for some reason I don't make it home, I will need you to take care of your little sister and your Mum. You will be the Man of the Cawley family. Be good, my son, and God will watch over you as he has me. I will be waiting impatiently for the time when we can all be together again.
   All my love,
   Dad
15. More than half of rich Americans have not shown their full wealth to their children, a new survey showed last Tuesday.
The survey, published by the Bank of America, studied the rich with $3 million or more in assets. It found that "surprisingly few of those surveyed have well-developed plans to preserve and pass on their assets to their children".
The majority of the 457 people surveyed are self-made, first-generation rich. Fifty-two percent of parents have chosen not to tell their children just how wealthy they are, and 15 percent have given away nothing about the family wealth. One in three parents said they had never thought to do it.
They are worried that their children would become lazy, spend money freely, make bad decisions and even become a target for gold diggers. Only 34 percent strongly agreed that their children would be able to handle any inheritance (遗产) they plan to leave them.
"There is an expectation about the wealthy parents that they have a responsibility to pass down their fortune to the next generation," said Sallie Krawcheck, president of the Bank of America Global Wealth and Investment Management. "Our research, however, uncovered changing views of what one generation owes to the next."
The trend is led by the world's richest man Bill Gates, who promised in 2008 that he would leave his $58 billion fortune to the charity started by him and his wife, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and not to his children.
"We want to give it back to society in the way that it will have the most positive impact." he said.
Of his plans for his children, Gates said: "I will give the kids some money but not a meaningful percentage…they will need to work but they will feel reasonably taken care of."
16. Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for "sport". Progress in this direction is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take part realize the cruelty and destruction.
The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly. Children too young to develop proper judgments through independent thought are led a long way away by their gunning parents. They are subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and gun-carrying as a way of putting redder blood in the veins. They are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill. In school, they view motion pictures which are supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to stimulate (刺激) a desire to own a gun.
Wildlife is disappearing because of shooting and because of the loss of wild land habitat. Habitat loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by shooting? They seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sport shooting to the great majority of people.
Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same night to life as we do and that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunner like to describe what they do as character building, but we know that to wound an animal and watch it go through the agony of dying can make nobody happy. If, as they would have you believe, gun-carrying and killing improve human character, then perhaps we should encourage war.
17. The cultures of the east and the west are really different from each other. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.
The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are started by rivers. In China, the mother river is the Yellow River while the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures were developed for several thousand years and formed their own styles. Then in Tang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture gradually went overseas to Japan, mixed into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from the Chinese one, it belongs to the same system.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain — the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the culture of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European one also crossed waters. When the colonists (殖民者) of England settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't differ from the European one a lot.
At the same time, the difference of the language system adds to the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形的) language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system, for example, the one I'm using to write this paper.
Other factors (因素) like human race difference counts as well. But what's more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.

(1)Are eastern culture and western culture the same system or different ones on the whole?

(2)How did the Chinese culture and Indian culture start?

(3)Why doesn't the American culture differ from the European one a lot?

(4)How many factors of culture differences are mentioned?

(5)What is the passage mainly about?
