11. Last month, our dog welcomed me when I came home from school. He wanted a walk, but I was too (1)      . I threw down my bag and went to the living room. The minute I sat down in front of the TV, my mom came over.
"Could you please take the dog for a (2)      ?" she asked.
"Could I watch one show first?" I asked. "No!" she replied angrily. "You watch TV all the time and never help out around the house! I can't work all day and do housework all evening."
"Well, I work all day at school, too! I'm just as tired as you are!" I shouted back.
My mom did not say anything and walked away. For one week, she did not do any housework and (3)       did I. Finally, I could not find a clean dish or a clean shirt.
The next day, my mom came home from work to find the house clean and tidy.
"What happened?" she asked in surprise.
"I'm so sorry, Mom. I finally understand that we need to (4)       the housework to have a clean and comfortable home." I replied.
12. I looked out at the smiling faces in the school hall. The applause (掌声) filled my ears. I could not believe I finally made it! I was such a (1)       girl that I had few friends. Even when I knew someone well, I was afraid to speak to her. But I changed a lot just because of my best friend, Lisa. She helped me find a new person inside me.
It happened in my Grade Eleven. One day, our teacher Mrs. Sather told us that our class was going to perform (表演) a play. "I need someone to (2)       the lead of Dorothy." she said, "Who want to try?" A few students who like playing put their hands up (3)       — but I, of course, didn't put up mine.
After class Lisa came to me. "Dallas, I was thinking you would be the person for Dorothy. You're great at(4)       things, so you won't worry about forgetting words. Perfect for Dorothy!" she said. Lisa looked into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. "I really want you to (5)       it for me. But if you really don't want to, I won't make you. It's your choice." Lisa wanted me in this role. She believed in me. I knew it was time to (6)       off my shy cloak (披风).
After five-month practice with my classmates, we were ready to perform, but I was (7)       as I had ever been. "It doesn't matter how you do tonight," said Lisa. "You have already shown yourself how wonderful you are and I know you will make it!"
At the end of the play, when the audience (观众) stood and applauded, I knew they were not just cheering for my performance that night, but for the performances they knew would come in later years because of my new-found (8)      .
Thank you, Lisa, my best friend!

14. Some time ago I found that one of my chairs had a broken leg. There were a lot of antique (古董) shops near my home, so I thought it was easy to get it repaired. One morning I carried the chair with me and went into the first shop, but the man wouldn't look at my chair. The second shop was just the same, and the third and the fourth — so I decided that my way must be wrong.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, "Would you like to buy a chair?" He looked it over carefully and said, "Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?" "Twenty pounds," I said. "OK, I'll give you twenty pounds." he said. 'It's got a broken leg," I said. "Yes, I saw that. It's nothing," he said.
Everything was going according to my plan and I was getting excited. "What will you do with it?" I asked. "Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done." he said. "I'll buy it." I said. "What do you mean? You've just sold it to me," he said. "Yes, I know but I've changed my mind. I am sorry. I'll give you twenty-seven pounds for it." I said.
"You must be crazy," he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. "I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair."
"You're right," I said. "And what would you do if I walked in and said, 'Would you repair this chair for me?'"
"I wouldn't agree to do it," he said. "We don't do repairs, not enough money in it. But I'll repair this for you. Shall we say for five pounds?" He was a very nice man.
15. Imagine this. There's an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greater Strength, suggests that willpower (意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term rather than in the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: The Marshmallow (棉花糖)Test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they'd be given a second one and then they could eat both.
So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower — they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who'd shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.
So, if you do daily "self-control exercises", such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you'll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your "willpower muscle" can get tired. If you've had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat.
That way, you'll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
16. It happens every night — bedtime. But what if you're not sleepy? Should you still go to bed if you are just going to lie there with your eyes wide open? It's a problem that has been around as long as there are people trying to sleep.
You might be excited by something you did in the day. You might be nervous about what you're going to do the next day. Maybe you don't like sleeping alone in your room. Maybe you have frightening (吓人的) dreams. All of these are possible reasons for your sleeping problem. However, there are some steps you can take to help you solve it.
One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you're worrying about at bedtime. For example, if you're nervous about taking a test, or upset about being teased (被嘲弄) at school, it can really help to tell somebody. Knowing that somebody has heard you can help ease your mind so that you can have a good rest.
Sleeping in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room is a good choice. If there's anything in your room that makes you feel uneasy or anxious at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, or a noisy faucet (水龙头) in the bathroom, be sure to ask your parents to move or fix it. Make sure electronics, such as mobile phones or iPads, are kept away from your bed. They can keep you excited, making it harder for you to fall asleep.
If you are usually restless around bedtime, doing certain things to relax beforehand may help you fall asleep. Try to take more time to wind down by taking a warm bath, or listening to a bedtime story at least 30 minutes before you go to sleep. It also helps to follow a bedtime routine and go to sleep at the same time every night. As a result, your body will get the message that it's almost time to sleep. Your body will know to start feeling tired.
In order to find the right solution for you, it's important that you understand what exactly is keeping you up at night. Getting a good night's sleep is worth the time and effort of finding the right solution to your sleeping problem.
17. Bashert is a gentle, golden dog. In her mind, there is no human problem so big she can't lick (舔) better. When her owner is sad, she licks him to make him happy. When her owner feels upset, she licks him again to encourage him.
"When I go to camp, I miss Bashert a lot," Bashert's owner Aaron Richards, a 14-year-old boy in the US, told the New York Times.
Animals like Bashert play an important part in people's lives. Whether it is a dog, a cat or a goldfish, people always enjoy their companionship (陪伴). But do you know that people also love animals for other reasons?
When staying with animals, people can relax. Compared to the human world, the animal world seems to be simpler. People don't need to worry about being judged by words or behaviors. For children, they can forget grades and class performance. What they feel is warmth and acceptance without any conditions.
Animals, especially pets, also teach people to learn responsibility. Besides feeding and cleaning them, you also need to care for them. When they are sick, take them to an animal hospital. When they feel lonely, just play with them for a while. When they get old, you should spend time with them and let them know that you will always love them. Such a caring heart also tells you to treat people in a nice way. Then, you will find yourself a much beloved person.
