Fires, floods, hurricanes (飓风) and locusts (蝗虫) ﹣ 2020 was a painful year full of disasters.
The year began with a series of bush-fires in Australia. It forced thousands to leave their homes and killed at least 29 people and more than a billion animals. In the spring, swarms (一大群) of locusts invaded East Africa, the Middle East and South wildfires broke out across the western United States and Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana really hard. In October, Typhoon Goni hit the Philippines and the worst flooding in decades killed more than 100 people. In Vietnam, the end of 2020 saw Tropical Storm Chalane strike the coast of Mozambique (莫桑比克) .
Meanwhile, COVID﹣19 was an ever﹣present concern in the background during most of the worlds natural disasters in 2020. Since the pandemic (疾病大流行) began, effort to contain it have complicated everything from the spraying of locust control pesticides (杀虫剂) to the organization of camps for wildfire firefighters. And people running away from disasters faced extra challenges as they tried to maintain social distancing in shelters.
At the same time, _____. For example, wildfire in the western United States not only destroyed homes and businesses but also cast smoke over huge areas of the county, turning skies orange and making breathing the air as bad as smoking a pack of cigarettes in a day. The dirty air, in turn, worsened the potential (潜在的) health risks for those who had fallen ill with COVID-19.
These disasters were deadly and destructive. While they all had their origins (根源) in nature, human action has made these events truly devastating (极具破坏性的).
All the while, people are changing the climate. The emission of greenhouse gases like CO2 into the air by burning fossil fuels is heating up the planet. This makes many natural disasters become even more destructive. Climate change doesn't always "cause" disasters, but it makes them more likely to be extreme.
However, because people are driving many of the factors that make extreme weather so devastating, they can also take steps to reduce the impact. They can build stronger seawalls and protective infrastructure (基础设施) while also investing more in disaster management. Over the long run, reducing greenhouse gas emissions will also help a lot.
The disasters that took place in 2020 will linger ( 徘徊) in the minds of people for a long time as people try to rebuild their lives. The shadow of 2020 will likely stretch well into 2021 ﹣ and beyond.

"If I ran my business the way you people operate your school, I wouldn't be in business very long!" I said before a group of angry(1)       . I represented a group of business people who wanted to improve public schools. I was a manager at an ice cream company that became famous when People Magazine chose our blueberry as the "Best Ice Cream In America".
As soon as I finished, a woman raised her hand. To my surprise, she appeared polite and pleasant. "We are told, sir, that you manage a company that makes good ice cream. "
I replied(2)      , "Best ice cream in America, Madam. "
"Sir, " she said, "when you are standing on your receiving dock and you see a shipment of blueberries of poor quality arrive, what do you do?" At once, I knew the question was a trap, but I wasn't going to(3)      . "I send them back. "
"That's right!" she raised her voice, "But we can never send back our blueberries. We take them big, small, rich, poor, gifted, confident, homeless, rude, and brilliant. We take them all!And that, sir, is why it's not a business. It's school. "
In an explosion, all 290 teachers(4)       to their feet and yelled. "Yeah!Blueberries!Blueberries!" And so began my long transformation.
Since then, I have visited hundreds of schools. I have learned that a school is not a business. For one thing, schools are unable to(5)       the quality of their raw (未加工的) material.
Yet it doesn't refuse the need for change. We must change how we teach to give all children the chance to become successful. But educators cannot do this alone. These changes can happen only with the understanding, trust, permission, and active(6)       of the whole society. Therefore, to improve public education means more than changing our schools, it means changing the whole county.

A new study by Oxford University scientists shows that playing video games can improve people's mental health ﹣the way that we think, feel and behave. The research was released just as a new generation of gaming consoles (游戏操控杆) hit UK's shops. It goes (1)a        claims that gaming is bad for people.
The Oxford team decided to see what impact video games had on players' sense of well﹣being ﹣﹣ their feelings of long﹣term comfort, health and happiness. Researchers worked with Electronic Arts (EA) and Nintendo to send (2)s       questions to 3274 people. These individuals would spend between four and five hours each week playing the games Plants vs Zombies (植物大战僵尸) : Battle for Neigh﹣borville or Animal Crossing (动物之森) :New Horizon.
Overall, they found that the people who had spent more time on the games reported feeling a greater and more positive sense of well﹣being. The team also found that gamers who were (3)c        socially with others while playing online were more likely to be mentally healthier than those who played on their own.
This suggests that the mental health benefits that participants in the study received could have come as much from having spent time with their friends while gaming as it had from the act of the gaming (4)i       On the other hand, the researchers also found that people who were struggling with their mental health in the real world might get (5)l       of a benefit from gaming, and their mental health could even be made worse.
Andrew Przybylski, who led the study, says it shows that people should not be (6)p        from playing video games. "Play can be an (7)a        that relates positively to people's mental health, and regulating video games could withhold (阻断) those benefits from players, " he said. "This is pretty convincing evidence (可信的证据) that we shouldn't expect the worst — at least for these kinds of social games."

Not far from a popular movie-making city lies a small town that you'll wish you'd heard of sooner.
One day, Ashley Erikson was sick, so she stayed at home. What's worse, she realized she was out of office. She wasn't well enough to head to the store, so she reached out to her neighborhood Facebook group. Within just a few minutes, a number of people showed up at her door with steaming mugs of coffee for their neighbor in need.
You might think such a thing is too good to be true. However, it is really happening in North Evergreen Street and the surrounding area in Burbank, California, not far from Hollywood.
This is a place where folks wave when you walk by and neighbors drop off a dozen fresh eggs on your porch (门廊). You might even find a fresh bag of limes hanging from your doorknob.
"Over the years, we've given and received oranges, lemons, limes, grapes and tomatoes," says resident Jane H. These neighbors just like to share. Recently, Jon O. posted in the neighborhood Facebook group that he would fire up his outdoor pizza oven for anyone who felt like coming over. He made 18 pizzas and shared them among his neighbors. When one neighbor decided to redo her front yard, the local recycling center gathered together a number of people to help her.
All of this encouraged Erikson to nominate (提名) her neighborhood as one of the "Nicest places in America. " Here are some Facebook comments (评论) in response to her nomination.
●"One day, I left my house with my front door wide open. Andre, our mailman, locked my house up for me. "
— Ann M.

●"My neighbors found a stray (走失的) pig in their yard that was obviously someone's pet. I was walking my dog when I saw them giving the pig carrots and apple slices. I wrote a post to see if anybody knew where it belonged.
Before my walk ended, the pig had found his way home!"
— Susan S.
●"We recently went on holiday only to find that we had forgotten to leave the key with our house / dog﹣sitter. Our neighbors across the street jumped right in to save the day ﹣ or days, as it was. They fed our dog, checked her water, made time to play with her, and even took her for walks. This neighborhood is the best I've ever lived in!"
— Dorothy B.
What a wonderful small town — so family-like, so friendly and so helpful! Do you want to live in it?
